Bully Prevention Month at New Brighton High School
Choose Kindness. Speak Up. Stand Together.
October is National Bullying Prevention Month—a time to raise awareness about bullying and remind everyone that we all have a role in creating a school where every student feels safe, respected, and included.
Bullying can happen in many ways, including verbal, physical, social, and online (cyberbullying). It can have a lasting impact on a person, which is why it is important to recognize it, speak up, and support one another.
💛 What Can YOU Do?
👀 Recognize it: Know the difference between everyday conflict and bullying. Bullying involves unwanted aggressive behavior that is repeated or involves a real or perceived power imbalance.
🗣️ Speak up: If you see something that doesn't seem right, don't be afraid to tell a trusted adult. Reporting bullying isn't "snitching"—it's helping make our school a better place.
🤝 Be an upstander: Include others, stand up for someone who is being mistreated, and don't encourage bullying by laughing, sharing, or joining in.
❤️ Choose kindness: A simple smile, encouraging word, or invitation to sit with someone can make a bigger difference than you realize.
📱 Think before you post: Words and pictures shared online can have a powerful impact. Treat others online with the same respect you would show them in person.
🦁 WE ROAR TOGETHER!
At New Brighton High School, every Lion matters. Let's make October a month where we choose kindness, show respect, include others, and have the courage to speak up when something isn't right.
Be the reason someone feels welcome.
Be the reason someone feels included.
Be the reason someone knows they are not alone.
Stand Up. Speak Out. Be Kind.
🦁💛 Let's make NBHS a place where everyone belongs!
SENIORS & FAMILIES: FAFSA INFORMATION
💰 FAFSA Completion Night – October 20
The 2027–2028 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) opens on October 1, 2026. Completing the FAFSA is an important step in accessing financial aid for college, career and technical education, and other postsecondary programs. The FAFSA can help determine eligibility for federal, state, and college-based grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study opportunities.
📢 Pennsylvania FAFSA Requirement
Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Pennsylvania law requires high school students to either complete the FAFSA or submit the official Pennsylvania FAFSA Completion Opt-Out Form.
Please know that a student will not be prevented from graduating or penalized by the school for not completing the FAFSA or an opt-out form.
We strongly encourage families to complete the FAFSA, even if you are unsure whether your student will qualify for financial aid. Completing the FAFSA does not require your student to attend college, accept financial aid, take out a loan, or enroll in a postsecondary program. Families who submit the opt-out form may still complete the FAFSA later if they choose.
📝 FAFSA COMPLETION NIGHT
Tuesday, October 20, 2026
5:30–6:30 p.m.
New Brighton High School – Room 434
Wendy Dunlap from PHEAA will be at NBHS to provide families with support and personal assistance as they complete the FAFSA.
Students are strongly encouraged to attend with their parent/guardian, as students play an important role in completing the FAFSA.
📌 What to Bring:
Student and parent Social Security numbers
Driver's license number, if applicable
Current bank statements
2024 tax information, including 1040s and W-2s for both students and parents
Any other financial information that may be helpful
Important: Parents and students should visit StudentAid.gov and create the appropriate accounts at least three days before FAFSA Completion Night.
Parents/guardians should enter through the high school main entrance.
❓ Can't Attend?
FAFSA resources are available through the Counseling Department. Families who do not wish to complete the FAFSA may submit the official Pennsylvania FAFSA Completion Opt-Out Form, which was included with the letter mailed home on September 28th. The completed form should be returned to Ms. Hubbard in the High School Counseling Department.

NOTES FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
🤒 Not Feeling Well During the School Day? See the School Nurse First!
Students, please remember: If you’re not feeling well during the school day, your first step is to see Mrs. Hokenbrough, our School Nurse.
Students are not permitted to call home and ask a parent or guardian if they can go home sick. Instead, students should report to the nurse so she can assess how they are feeling and determine the appropriate next steps.
Parents and guardians: If your child calls or texts you from school saying they aren't feeling well and want to come home, please remind them to go to the nurse first. Mrs. Hokenbrough will evaluate the student and determine whether they should be dismissed from school. If dismissal is necessary, the nurse will contact the parent or guardian and make the appropriate arrangements.
Following this procedure helps ensure that students receive the proper care and that families are contacted by the school nurse when a student needs to go home due to illness.
📖 Reminder: This procedure can be found in the Lion Student Handbook on page 31.
Thank you, Lions and families, for helping us follow this important procedure and keeping our school community healthy and safe! 💛🦁
