WOODLAWN HIGHLIGHTS
THERAPY DOGS
Truman
Truman is a 3-year-old Wheaten Terrier and is a certified therapy dog. This process involved completing basic obedience school, passing the Canine Good Citizen test, and being registered by a therapy dog organization approved by the American Kennel Club. Truman, though undeniably fluffy, belongs to a non-shedding, hypoallergenic breed. Research indicates that positive interactions with animals like Truman can boost endorphins, oxytocin, prolactin, and dopamine—hormones associated with blood pressure regulation, pain relief, stress reduction, and joy. These interactions are also linked to decreased worry and anxiety, developing interpersonal and social skills, and improved relationships with peers and adults. Truman will engage with students in our school, fostering a sense of responsibility and accomplishment. Students will have the opportunity to participate in teaching him, brushing him, and taking him on walks. Additionally, Truman will join during recess, allowing students to expend some of their energy playfully and enjoyably.
PEDRO
Pedro Pistachio Boedeker, originally hailing from the Gulf Coast, was brought to Kansas due to flooding.
Pedro is an active participant in the Douglas County community. He proudly holds membership in various professional organizations, with a unique role as a dedicated Loving Paws Therapy Dog Program member. Following intensive training and months of preparation, Pedro generously volunteers at Woodlawn and New York Elementary, spreading joy and comfort to those in need.
Pedro enjoys playing with his fellow canine companions, including his brothers George and Walter, in his leisure moments. His interests also extend to chasing squirrels, people-watching, cuddling, and showcasing his unique talent of sitting like a human. After a fulfilling workday, Pedro relaxes with a cup of peanut butter, coconut treats, and a well-deserved nap.
Pedro's heartwarming interactions with the students at school bring him immense joy. He loves the attention, pets, and affection he receives, making each school day a delight. As an enthusiastic Woodlawn Riverhawk, Pedro is thrilled to be a part of the school community, spreading happiness and furry companionship to all.
