3rd Grade Newsletter 9/28 - 10/2
Hello 3rd Grade Families!
3rd Graders had another week full of learning and joy! Please look below to take a look at the fun and to look at updates for the month of October.
Curriculum: What is your student learning this week?
Math: Students learn how to solve addition and subtraction problems using number lines and bar graphs
Literacy: Students spent the week analyzing our I survived Hurricane Katrina novel from last week. We dove into characterization, cause and effect, inferences, and main ideas
Spelling: Decoding and spelling words with long vowels. (Vowel diagraphs oi oy, au aw)
Grammar: What are articles (The, a, an). How can we use verbs, pronouns, nouns, and articles in a sentence.
Writing: How can we make inferences about what a character is like and write about it? What character traits do characters show and how can we write about them.
Vocabulary: combined with literacy and social studies. Made connections across all subjects to use new vocabulary words
Social Studies: Students completed their test about directions and famous monuments in the US. Ask them what direction we need to travel to see Mount Rushmore!
Religion: Saint's Project is underway! Students have spent the week researching their Saint and learning more about their life. They have also been painting and drawing their Saint in art class.
This Weeks Fun!
Salesian Stars!
At our 2nd assembly of the year, Salesian Stars were presented with their certificates. We had 2 amazing 3rd graders get honored for their amazing abilities to live out the little virtues.
Friendly Reminders
Library
We will have Library on Wednesday, October 7 so please encourage your child to turn in any Library books they have laying around! There is a turn in bin right by the recess doors that they can slip them into whole walking into school.
Homework Update
Spelling & Math
Spelling packets and daily math homework seems to be working well with this group so we are going to stick with this method.
Read! Read! Read!
We ask that students complete about 20-25 minutes of reading outside of school each day. This can be creative, like reading a recipe out loud, the instructions to a board game, or even reading a script! I want reading at home to be fun and creative!
Student Learning Highlights!
Social Studies!
Students learned about famous monuments in the United States! We then looked at famous monuments in Minnesota! We got into a very very very serious debate whether Wisconsin or Minnesota has more lakes. LOVE THE PASSION!
Beach Day!
On Monday, students earned their first theme day of the year so we pretended like we were at the beach! During literacy, students laid out on their towels for a partner reading project. We had so much fun with our sunglasses, our beach ball, and listening to the the sounds of waves (sadly from a speaker).
Take a look at some pictures!
Books? Waves? Same thing.
Book sandcastles!
Had to hide from the UV rays
Kindergarten Buddies
Our 3rd graders got to spend our second time this year with our kindergarten buddies. We did an arts and crafts project together where we made pumpkins!
Blessing of The Animals
Blessing of the Animals will take place on Friday, October 2nd at Hanky's garden (next to the tennis courts) at 3:00pm. All are welcome accompanied by an adult! I will be stopping by and would love to meet some of our furry 3rd grade friends! Hope to see you there!
Parent Pop-In Saint Project
