Superintendent's Corner
May 2026 NRESC Updates from Dr. Vancheri
May was a Championship Month of Appreciation!
As the excitement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins to sweep across the globe, with all roads leading to this area for the final game in July, May reminded me that some of the greatest teams are not found on a soccer pitch—they are found in our schools, offices, homes, and communities.
May has always been one of my favorite months. The weather begins to warm, baseball season is in full swing, another school year enters its final stretch, and yes, another birthday arrives! While the years may be moving a little faster than they once did, one thing remains constant: May provides us with countless opportunities to recognize the individuals who make a difference every single day.
Throughout the month, we celebrated many of the all-stars who help our students, families, and communities succeed. Special appreciation goes to our principals, teachers, school lunch heroes, nurses, speech therapists, mothers, members of our armed forces, and the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. While these individuals deserve our gratitude year-round, May gives us the opportunity to shine an even brighter spotlight on their contributions.
With the World Cup taking center stage this summer, you'll notice that this month's stories are presented through a World Cup lens. From highlighting MVP performances to celebrating teamwork, dedication, perseverance, and championship-level commitment, we will recognize the many people who help make our organization successful. After all, every great team needs talented players, strong leadership, and a shared commitment to achieving something bigger than themselves.
Thank you to all of our champions who continue to make a positive impact each and every day.
Beyond my monthly updates, I encourage you to check out the monthly newsletters from the following NRESC departments and programs:

Pearl Earns MVP Honors
Every World Cup team has a player whose impact goes far beyond goals and statistics. At NRESC, that player is Pearl, our beloved therapy dog. Throughout the year, Pearl has visited NRESC schools and programs, as well as many of our partner school districts, bringing comfort, encouragement, and countless smiles to students and staff alike. Whether helping students manage stress, supporting social-emotional growth, or simply brightening someone's day, Pearl has become a fan favorite wherever she goes.
Just as World Cup legends like Lionel Messi, Luka Modrić, and Zinedine Zidane were recognized for elevating their teams on the sport's biggest stage, Pearl's value cannot be measured by numbers alone. While she may not be scoring goals on the pitch, she consistently delivers championship-level performances through her calming presence and unwavering ability to connect with others.
Her visits remind us that some of the most valuable members of a team make their biggest impact through kindness, compassion, and support. In our World Cup-themed month, Pearl has earned her place among the tournament's elite performers and is certainly worthy of MVP honors.
NRESC Education Foundation Scores a Big Win!
The 2nd Annual NRESC Education Foundation Golf Outing was a championship-worthy success! Under beautiful skies, more than 60 golfers took to the course—doubling participation from our inaugural event and helping raise nearly $8,000 to support the Foundation's mission.
Much like Morocco's unforgettable run to the semifinals at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the NRESC Education Foundation continues to exceed expectations and build momentum with each passing year. What started as a promising new initiative is quickly becoming a major success story, thanks to the dedication and support of an incredible team.
Just like any successful World Cup squad, this achievement was made possible through tremendous teamwork. We extend our sincere gratitude to all of our sponsors, golfers, volunteers, and supporters whose generosity made the day possible. Thanks to your support, this year's outing was a resounding victory, and we're already looking forward to an even bigger and better event next year. The Foundation has momentum, and we're excited to keep advancing the ball down the field!
Play, Score, & Support: NRESC Hits the Arcade! Deadline is June 30!
Think of it like a World Cup knockout stage where every purchase is a decisive play—small moments adding up to a big result on the scoreboard. Just like teams fighting their way through extra time and penalty kicks to lift the trophy, every card sold helps us advance the mission and bring home a win for our programs.
Honors for Education’s Top Performers!
Every World Cup tournament shines a spotlight on exceptional talent, dedication, and performance—and the same can be said for education. On May 5, Passaic County honored its Teachers and Educational Specialists of the Year during a breakfast celebration at West Milford High School, recognizing those who consistently perform at the highest level for their students and school communities.
Just as the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States showcased unforgettable stars such as Romário, Roberto Baggio, and Hristo Stoichkov, this event celebrated educators whose skill, commitment, and leadership make a lasting impact every day. While those players earned international acclaim on soccer's biggest stage, our honorees continue to make a difference where it matters most—in classrooms, therapy rooms, and school communities across Passaic County.
A special congratulations goes to NRESC's own all-stars: Lauren Elia, Occupational Therapist at Second Home, and Tracy Tobiassen, Teacher at Phoenix. Their commitment, passion, and impact make them invaluable members of Team NRESC. Congratulations to all of this year's honorees for earning a well-deserved spot on the educational world's World Cup roster!
Global Campus: Competing on the World Stage Through Learning, Language, and Connection
Just as the FIFA World Cup has expanded from 32 to 48 teams, creating opportunities for more nations to compete on soccer's biggest stage, the NRESC Global Campus continues to expand its reach throughout the region, opening doors for more students and school districts to access innovative educational opportunities. This growth represents more than an increase in numbers—it reflects a commitment to creating a broader, more inclusive playing field where students who benefit from a non-traditional setting can thrive in environments designed for their success.
As more districts join the Global Campus network, additional students gain access to flexible, supportive learning environments tailored to their individual needs. Much like the expanded World Cup welcomes new teams, new perspectives, and new success stories, the Global Campus continues to create pathways for learners who may need a different route to achieve their goals.
Just as success in the World Cup depends on the right formation, strong teamwork, and a commitment to helping every player contribute, the Global Campus continues to build a winning structure that helps every student stay in the game and move forward with confidence. For short- and long-term needs, districts are encouraged to call us today to learn how Global Campus can support their students.
May Highlights: Playing at World Cup Pace — Milestones & Meaningful Moments
Second Home Scores a Win for Teamwork and Environmental Awareness
At Second Home, clients stepped into a World Cup-style learning “match” for a hands-on session focused on identifying recyclables, reusables, and trash while building important life skills and teamwork. Like a well-coordinated squad moving the ball down the field, participants worked together, made quick decisions, and supported one another as they navigated each category with growing confidence.
In true World Cup spirit, we also drew inspiration from some of the game’s all-time great moments—like the brilliance of Diego Maradona during the 1986 World Cup, when individual creativity and team flow came together on the sport’s biggest stage. That same blend of awareness, timing, and instinct showed up in our own “match” as clients demonstrated focus and collaboration.
Second Home Takes the Field in a Music Session with Ms. Alyssa
At Second Home, participants took to the “pitch” for a World Cup-style warmup in music with Ms. Alyssa! Through singing and rhythm activities, they worked together like a well-coordinated team, building communication and social skills in a fun, supportive environment.
The session had the feel of the game played in its smoothest form—where the ball moves like music itself, flowing from one player to the next in rhythm and harmony, much like the “tiki-taka” style made famous by FC Barcelona under leaders like Pep Guardiola. Every pass, touch, and response felt connected, intentional, and in sync.
Just like champions on the world stage, participants practiced listening, responding, and connecting—showing that every great team is built on collaboration, timing, and shared energy.
Second Home Recognizes a Key Player: Ms. Chris and the Art of Communication
This May, Second Home is proud to recognize National Speech-Language-Hearing Month and celebrate the essential role of our Speech-Language Pathologist, Ms. Chris! In true World Cup fashion—where every great team depends on communication, timing, and connection—Ms. Chris helps our clients develop the skills needed to stay in the game and succeed both on and off the field.
Much like a legend who defines the beautiful game, Ms. Chris brings a “world-class” presence to every session—reminiscent of Pelé, whose unforgettable 1958 World Cup performance, including his stunning hat-trick in the semifinal and two goals in the final, announced him on the global stage as one of soccer’s all-time greats. That same sense of precision, timing, and impact shows up in how Ms. Chris supports communication growth—helping every “play” connect and every effort move the team forward.
This annual observance raises awareness about communication disorders and highlights the impact speech and hearing professionals have in improving lives across all ages. We thank Ms. Chris for her dedication, support, and championship-level commitment to helping our clients strengthen their communication skills and build meaningful connections every day.
Ramapo Ave. Learning Center: A World Cup Week of Teamwork and Appreciation
Oscar Party Day at Phoenix: A Championship Celebration of Our All-Stars
On May 14, Phoenix rolled out the red carpet to celebrate creativity, effort, and achievement across our program. Students and staff came together for a fun-filled event recognizing the hard work, growth, and dedication shown throughout the year. From big smiles to even bigger accomplishments, it’s a day that highlights just how much our Phoenix community has to celebrate.
Like a championship match where the outcome can hinge on a perfectly struck free kick or the nerve-wracking pressure of a penalty kick shootout, every moment this year has carried its own intensity, skill, and opportunity. Just as great teams rely on composure when stepping up to the spot—or precision when bending a free kick over the wall—our students have shown focus, resilience, and determination in their own “big moments,” turning challenges into breakthroughs one step at a time.
Just like a squad walking onto the world stage, everyone at Phoenix plays a vital role in making each day successful. Whether it’s perseverance in the classroom, kindness toward peers, or steady progress toward individual goals, today we celebrate every “performance” that deserves recognition. A huge shoutout to our incredible staff for making this special day possible—and to our students for being the true stars of the show!
School 1 After Care: Playing on the Global Stage of the Playground
At School 1 in Woodland Park, our After Care students turned the playground into their own World Cup-style training ground, full of energy, teamwork, and nonstop action! From running drills on the field to creative games on the equipment, students worked together like a well-coached squad—sharing space, taking turns, and cheering each other on throughout the afternoon.
Just like the world’s best teams rely on communication and collaboration to win on the global stage, our After Care group showed what great teamwork looks like in action. Whether they were scoring imaginary game-winning goals or simply enjoying time with friends, it was a fun-filled session that highlighted connection, cooperation, and the joy of play.
Shared Services Begin with a Conversation with the NRESC
Shared Services are Just a Kick Away!
At NRESC, our Shared Services Division continues to operate like a World Cup-level organization—deep roster, elite coordination, and game-changing support across the entire region. Our transportation services alone represent a nearly $20 million operation, larger than some entire school districts in Passaic County, ensuring that students are moved safely, efficiently, and reliably every day through a system built for scale and precision.
Beyond transportation, our “team behind the team” extends into Business and Human Resources services, with staff embedded throughout the region providing essential supports such as payroll, accounts payable, and more—keeping operations running smoothly behind the scenes. Our Shared Technology Services unit further strengthens this network by offering both remote and on-site support, including social media management, technical assistance, network administration, and hands-on “boots on the ground” expertise when needed. Together, these services form a championship-caliber support system designed to help our partners succeed on every level of the field.
Partner District Spotlight: Manchester Regional High School
The NRESC and Manchester have built a strong, long-standing partnership centered on supporting students and families across multiple needs. Together, they provide special education and non-public programming. This year, Manchester also became the home for many of Pearl the therapy dog’s visits! This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to ensuring high-quality, reliable services that enhance the educational experience for all learners.
In many ways, this partnership mirrors the way the 2006 World Cup champion Italian squad came together—one of Dr. Vancheri’s favorite teams. That group, led by captain Fabio Cannavaro and guided by coach Marcello Lippi, was built on trust, structure, and collective responsibility. With key figures like Gianluigi Buffon anchoring the back line and calm, composed leadership across the pitch, Italy showed how consistency and coordination can carry a team through the highest-pressure moments.
Their 2006 run—culminating in a World Cup final decided by penalty kicks—highlighted the value of preparation, resilience, and unity when every detail matters. Much like that squad, the NRESC–Manchester partnership succeeds because each side understands its role, supports the other, and steps up in the decisive moments to deliver for the people they serve.
Partner District Spotlight: Clifton Public Schools
Clifton Public Schools and the NRESC have maintained a strong and enduring partnership dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of students, staff, and families. Through this collaboration, they deliver a range of services including related supports such as occupational therapy, a comprehensive credit recovery program during the summer, and 1:1 paraprofessionals. This ongoing partnership underscores a mutual commitment to providing dependable, high-quality services that strengthen and enrich the educational experience for all learners.
In many ways, this collaboration reflects the spirit of the 2002 World Cup run, when true underdogs rose to the occasion through extraordinary teamwork and belief. Squads like the South Korea national football team and the Turkey national football team stunned the world by advancing to the semifinals, powered not by individual stars alone, but by relentless cohesion, discipline, and collective effort.
Just as those teams succeeded by organizing tightly, supporting one another across every line, and stepping up in decisive moments, the Clifton–NRESC partnership thrives on coordination, reliability, and shared purpose. Each service—whether academic, behavioral, or related support—functions like a well-drilled unit working toward a common goal: ensuring every learner has the structure and support needed to succeed.

In true World Cup fashion—where matches are kept fair and precise thanks to referees on the field and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team reviewing key decisions—our internal support structure helps ensure every question gets to the right “official” for a clear and accurate call.
