Welcome to November Vikings! Welcome to November Vikings!

As the seasons change, we are reminded of how much our students change and grow. They have grown and learned so much since beginning school in August. Our students are leading the way! We are all so proud of them. We thank you for your support and all that you do to partner with us for your student's education.

Attendance Matters Attendance Matters

What is an excused absence? What is an excused absence?

An excuse for absence from school may be approved on the basis of one or more of the following conditions:

(a) Illness of the child. The approving authority may require the written statement of a physician/mental health professional if it is deemed appropriate;

(b) Illness in the family necessitating the presence of the child. The approving authority may require the written statement of a physician and an explanation as to why the child's absence was necessary, if it is deemed appropriate;

(c) Quarantine in the home. The absence of a child from school under this condition is limited to the length of quarantine as determined by the proper health officials;

(d) Death of a relative. The absence arising from this condition is limited to a period of eighteen school hours unless a reasonable cause may be shown by the applicant child for a longer absence;

(e) Medical, behavioral or dental appointment. The approving authority may require the written statement of a physician, mental health professional, or dentist if it is deemed appropriate;

(f) Observance of religious holidays. A child shall be excused if the child's absence was for the purpose of observing a religious holiday consistent with the truly held religious beliefs of the child or the child's family;

(g) College visitation. The approving authority may require verification of the date and time of the visitation by the college, university, or technical college;

(h) Pre-enlistment reporting to military enlistment processing station. The approving authority may require verification of the date and time of the reporting;

(i) Absences due to a child's placement in foster care or change in foster care placement or any court proceedings related to the child's foster care status;

(j) Absences due to a child being homeless;

Kindergarten parents you should have received health screening (height/weight, vision, hearing and dental) results. If you have not seen them, check your child's book bag!

  • If your child failed the vision screening, PLEASE schedule an eye exam. So much of what is presented to children in schools is visual, vision and learning are closely related. Your child may complain of eye strain, headaches, fatigue and poor attention - these problems can be a sign of problems with vision.
  • If they failed the hearing screening, you can follow up with their pediatrician. Can indicate fluid behind the ear drum
  • If they were identified as needing to follow up for dental concerns; please know that dental issues can cause pain, lead to infection (and hospitalization) and indirectly impact learning.
  • IF YOU NEED HELP WITH ANY OF THESE REFERRALS, please contact Nurse Jenny: 614-365-6312, or call/text Google Voice:614-594-3377

School-Based Health Services (Care Connection)

Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s school-based health center provides health care services to all Columbus City students and their siblings, ages 0+.

Medical staff can help if children have a sore throat, bad cough, earache, headache, treat asthma, send medication to the pharmacy, as well as connect you with an additional healthcare provider.
These services are not meant to replace your pediatrician or family doctor. When your child has any medical need, your first call should always be to your pediatrician. If your child does not have a pediatrician or family doctor, we will connect you to one.

Same day appointments are available.

Columbus Public Health is coming to Valleyview Elementary School

They will be working with our 2nd grade students, to place dental sealants on permanent teeth.

This is a free service and is the greatest intervention we have to prevent tooth decay.

The students will bring home permission slips after the presentations on Monday, 11/13.

The team will return to apply sealants on Monday, 11/27.

Please be sure to complete the permission form, include insurance information and signature.

The service is FREE, but if you have insurance, they will be billed them for the service.

Parents, please keep a change of clothing (appropriate for temperatures outside) in your child's backpack or book bag. You never know when it might be needed! Unexpected weather can leave clothing cold and/or wet making it hard to focus and learn. Sometimes our little learners do not make it to the restroom on time and our older girls have unexpected issues.

We have a limited number of donated clothing items, and many children prefer their own. IF you have clothing items in good condition you would like to donate, please contact the family advocates. We currently need sweatpants, legging (no jeans please), t-shirts (long or short sleeves) and sweatshirts. These items are best for the needs we have and easier to get on and off. Jeans are hard because children prefer a specific type and fit. We are very limited by the amount of space available to store clothing. If you are in need of or have used clothing in good condition, please reach out to Andrea Evans or Ana Martinez for assistance.
