Semester 1 report cards

We are excited to share that your child's first semester report cards are now available in the Parent Portal.

Please note that these report cards are a snapshot in time, not final grades. They provide an overview of your child's academic progress midway through the year. Teachers will continue entering grades and feedback throughout the year, so your child's report will continue to evolve.

We encourage you to take this opportunity to review your child's report card, celebrate their achievements, and discuss any areas where additional support may be needed. Open communication among parents, students, and teachers remains key to a successful learning experience.

If you have questions or concerns about your child's progress, please don't hesitate to contact their teacher or the school administration. We're here to support your child's growth and success.

Directions to access grades can be found here.

Shaping the Future of BHMS: Your Feedback in Action GaDOE School Climate Survey

At Beacon Hill Middle School, our mission is to ensure every student feels Seen, Supported, and Successful. To achieve this, we rely on a strong partnership with our families. We invite you to participate in the annual GaDOE School Climate Survey, an anonymous statewide tool that measures perceptions of school safety, relationships, and our overall learning environment.

Your feedback is more than just data; we use it to revise and create our BHMS Action Plan (School 90 Day Plan). These insights allow our School Leadership Team to monitor progress and implement targeted strategies that directly enhance your child's daily experience. Please take 10–15 minutes to share your perspective and help us continue to elevate the standard of excellence at BHMS.

🐝 Bulldog Brilliance: BHMS Sweeps the District Spelling Bee!

We are thrilled to celebrate the spectacular performance of our students at the recent City Schools of Decatur District Spelling Bee! It was a remarkable afternoon of academic competition that highlighted the tenacity and dedication of our BHMS Bulldogs.

The event was a resounding success, spanning 23 intense rounds. This year’s competition tested more than just spelling; it featured challenging vocabulary rounds that required students to demonstrate a deep understanding of word origins and meanings. After several rounds of rigorous back-and-forth competition, the victory was secured when our champion successfully spelled the winning word: hydrophobia.

We are incredibly proud of our top three performers, who demonstrated exceptional poise and academic mastery under pressure:

  • District Champion: Ryan Zhou (6th Grade)

  • Runner-Up: Aizah Zafrullah (8th Grade)

  • Alternate: River Siegler (6th Grade)

Our Bulldogs' success is a testament to our mission of ensuring every student feels seen, supported, and successful. A special thank you to the teachers, instructional coaches, and families whose support fosters a love of learning at BHMS. Most importantly, congratulations to our spellers for an unforgettable 23 rounds of competition!

Go Bulldogs!

Supporting Student Well-Being This Spring

This spring, the Student Center will offer small groups to support students who may benefit from extra social-emotional help. Groups focus on one of three areas:

  • Internalizing concerns: anxiety, stress, withdrawal, self-confidence
  • Inattention/executive functioning: organization, planning, focus, classroom coping
  • Behavioral concerns: managing frustration, positive choices, communication, perspective-taking

Groups are led by the Student Center Counselor and graduate Clinical Mental Health Counseling interns. Students participate in one group per cycle, before the spring administration of the BASC-3 BESS social-emotional screener. Parents and students can indicate which area would be most helpful.

All participation is handled with care and confidentiality. Families interested in learning more or signing up can use the link below. Please submit your interest by Thursday, January 15, 2026.

From Reading to Thinking

As texts become more complex in the second semester, many middle school students read the words on the page but miss the deeper meaning. This is a common challenge and often comes from reading too quickly without time to think.

Helping students slow down, even briefly, can make a big difference.

Try This at Home:
Ask your child to pause after a section and complete this sentence aloud or in writing:
“This part matters because…”

That single sentence encourages analysis rather than summary. It helps students identify what’s important and explain why it matters, not just what happened.

You don’t need long discussions or written responses. One thoughtful sentence is enough to strengthen comprehension and build confidence.

Reading improves fastest when students practice explaining their thinking

For support in establishing simple, sustainable reading routines at home, reach out to Mrs. Braxton | Reading Specialist at BHMS at tbraxton@csdecatur.net for guidance and additional resources.
