Kid Governor Inauguration

As you may remember, Hawks View 5th grader Lea Andrus was named the 2023 Oregon Kid Governor! Her inauguration was in Salem this week. You can find her platform video and inauguration speech here: http://or.kidgovernor.org/

In November, our Secretary of State came to announce Lea’s win and today, State Representative Courtney Neron and Sherwood’s Mayor Elect, Tim Rosener, came to Hawks View to congratulate her, learn more about her platform, tour the school, and meet her teacher/classmates.

We are very proud of Lea and know she will do great work for kids across our state!

Dinner Night Out @ Joe's Burgers

Join us for Dinner Night Out on Tuesday, January 17th at Joe’s Burgers! 20% of all in-store sales and 10% of online orders through ChowNow, will be donated back to our Hawks View PAC. Click here for flyer. We hope to see you there!

Save the Date! Kinder Open House

If you have an incoming kindergartener for the 2023-2024 school year, please mark your calendars! The Sherwood School District Kindergarten Open House will be held on March 2nd, 3:30 to 6:00pm. More information will be made available in the coming weeks. Please pass this information along to anyone you know who may not receive these email updates.

Grades 3-5 Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB)

Oregon Battle of the Books for Grades 3-5 will begin soon. Information will be sent out to those participating by our OBOB Coordinators. Prior to Pool Play battles beginning on Friday, February 10th, there will be two optional after school practice sessions on January 30th and on February 6th from 2:15-3:00pm. Students should only attend if transportation has been arranged. Permission forms for these after school sessions will be sent home soon!

Coaches and/or volunteers attending practice sessions must have a background check form completed and approved, and must show proof of Covid-19 vaccination or District approved exception before volunteering. This process can take 7-10 business days to complete, so please plan ahead. If you need an exception form, please contact the office at 503-825-5400.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the Hawks View OBOB Coordinators:

Allison Bassich - abassich@sherwood.k12.or.us

When to Keep Students Home

With the influx of illnesses in the community, we would like to share a reminder of when to keep your student(s) home. Click here for the flyer from the Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority. This information is also available on the District Website under the Health Services Department tab and then policies. Please help us keep our families and staff healthy!

Free Vision Screening for All Students

We will be giving a free vision screening to all students at Hawks View on Tuesday, February 7. The testing will be done by the Lions Club with volunteers using the SPOT screening devices. The test is painless, is done from a distance, and does not touch your child’s eyes or face.

Results come to us in about a week. Most children pass the exam, and due to the volume of paperwork, we will only send home results for students who do not pass the exam (results sent via backpack mail). If you want a copy of “passing” results, please contact our office to request. Screening results for all students will also go in their school file.

If you do not want your child to participate in this free vision screening (ie, if you want to opt-out your child) please contact the school office. If you have any questions about the vision screening, please call Health Services at 503-825-5093.

Financial assistance may be available if you need an eye exam and/or glasses for your child.

Free Dental Screenings for Children Age Seven and Younger

Dear Parent/Guardian: We will have free dental screenings by local Dentist Dr. JJ Bittner and/or Dr. Kendra Flann at Hawks View Elementary on February 17th, for children age seven or younger who have not been to a dentist. This is a screening only and no treatment will be given. You may already have turned in a form to your school to say that your child has been to a dentist, or that the screening is against your family’s beliefs -- if so, your child will not be screened. If your child is screened, results will be sent to you in backpack mail and also go into the student file. If you wish to opt-out of the screening, please contact your school office.

For more information about the screening call Health Services at 503-825-5088. Good dental care contributes to the overall good health of our students!

School Board Recognition Month

The Sherwood School District is joining Oregon's other 196 school districts in celebrating January as "School Board Recognition Month." As volunteers, our school board members spend countless hours year-round working to serve the students, staff, parents, and community members of Sherwood, with a focus on providing the best possible education opportunities for K-12 learners in our district. Please join us in thanking our Board of Directors for their dedication and service to our schools!
