What is PBIS?

Walter Woodward Elementary School is committed to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment for its students, and one of the key strategies employed to achieve this goal is the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral support needed for students to achieve social, emotional, and academic success.

A notable aspect of the PBIS program at Walter Woodward Elementary is the use of Mustang Bucks. This incentive system is designed to recognize and reward students who consistently demonstrate positive behavior in accordance with the school's core values. The Mustang Bucks are used as a tangible representation of the positive choices students make, reinforcing the importance of being Safe, Responsible, and Respectful.

Monthly PBIS Focuses

PBIS Monthly Expectations

To continue fostering a positive and respectful school environment, we will be introducing a specific PBIS focus for each month from January through May. Each focus will highlight key behaviors that contribute to student success and support our shared expectations for a safe, responsible, and respectful learning community.

  • January: Being on time to school – Emphasizing the importance of punctuality and starting the day ready to learn.
  • February: Using kind words to adults – Encouraging positive communication and respectful interactions with adults on campus.
  • March: Keeping hands and feet to yourself & playing safe – Promoting safe play and personal space during recess and throughout the school day.
  • April: Bringing devices to school each day – Reinforcing the habit of coming to school prepared with necessary learning tools.
  • May: Catching kindness & showing respect to one another – Celebrating kindness and respect as essential components of a positive school climate.

These monthly focus areas will be integrated into our PBIS instructions, daily reminders, and school-wide recognition efforts. By working together, we aim to reinforce these essential skills and create a supportive environment where all students can thrive.

Teaching Expectations Teaching Expectations

Upon returning from Winter Break, students will engage in a review of PBIS lesson plans facilitated by their teachers. This review will reinforce schoolwide expectations, promoting a safe, respectful, and responsible learning environment. By revisiting these key principles, students will have the opportunity to reflect on positive behavior practices and understand the importance of maintaining a supportive school culture. The lessons will provide clarity on expected behaviors across various school settings, ensuring a consistent and unified approach to student conduct.

January PBIS Focus - Arrive to School on Time

The PBIS focus for January is punctuality, encouraging students to arrive on time to school every day. Our school gates open at 7:45 AM, providing students ample time to prepare for the day ahead. Classes begin promptly at 8:00 AM, and being on time ensures students are ready to engage in learning from the start. Consistent punctuality supports student success and contributes to a positive school environment.

Teaching Schoolwide Rules, Behavioral Expectations, & Routines

Why teach the Rules, Expectations, and Routines during the first week of school?

Instilling behavioral expectations and routines consistently across various settings is crucial for ensuring a shared understanding among all staff members. This fosters uniformity in the enforcement of school rules, addressing the common issue of staff harboring disparate expectations regarding acceptable behavior in different contexts, which can be perplexing for students. Another key rationale is the necessity of avoiding assumptions that students are already familiar with the expectations and routines.

What are Routines?

Procedures and processes designated for students, known as routines, play a vital role in maintaining a smooth operational flow and preventing potential issues. These encompass various activities such as entering the cafeteria, navigating the lunch line, dismissing classes from lunch, and the protocol for sharpening pencils during class. It is essential to carefully select routines, as some may inadvertently encourage student misbehavior. The teaching and reinforcement of routines during the initial week of the school year are imperative to ensure a standardized set of procedures is followed by everyone in the school.

During the inaugural week of the school year, our Mustang Round Up will transpire. This event offers students the chance to familiarize themselves with different areas on campus and review corresponding expectations and routines. These areas encompass the cafeteria, library, office, playground, and bathroom, each featuring a presenter elucidating the expectations of Being Safe, Responsible, and Respectful.

Attendance Matters! Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow Attendance Matters! Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow

Daily attendance is essential for student success, as consistent participation in school allows students to fully engage in learning opportunities and build positive habits that support their academic and social growth. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) are most effective when students are present and on time each day, as it enables them to receive consistent reinforcement of positive behaviors and expectations. Regular attendance fosters a sense of belonging and accountability, creating a safe, respectful, and responsible school environment where all students can thrive. By prioritizing daily, on-time attendance, families and schools work together to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.
