"I got to work in the hallway today!"

While some people associate working in the hallway as a result of misbehaving, it's the complete opposite here at RJH. We have several designated independent work spaces around the building, meant for students to work in small groups.

When allowed to work independently, students are developing critical executive functioning skills such as self regulation, time management, task initiation and completion, and planning and prioritizing. When students are stuck, they rely on each other to solve problems, which builds resilience and collaboration skills.

Our staff has worked hard to set expectations when students are able to work in these areas, and students consistently rise to the occasion. It's so important for middle school students to see themselves as independent, and we do all we can to honor that (with appropriate limits, of course!)

Ask your middle school student if they've worked in these areas, or other areas around the building.

Did you know that students in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade teachers have live homework updates? These documents are updated each week, and adapted throughout the week as needed. Students have bookmarked the homework document, and we encourage families to do the same.

Wondering why 8th grade does not have a homework document? This is a purposeful decision we have made as a staff. We want our eighth graders to take on more responsibility while in a smaller environment, and potentially make mistakes while still in middle school. This way, students have gained experience and techniques in organization and time management that will help them in high school.
