.. At the Brain Fair, that is! On Saturday, November 2nd, Principia (West Leyden's Science Olympiad) attended the annual event hosted by Northwestern University’s Brain Awareness Outreach program. The fair took place at the Lurie Medical Research Center in downtown Chicago. Students learned about the field of neuroscience by engaging in hands-on activities and attending a graduate student panel. We THINK that a good time was had by all!

β˜• Hot Chocolate Run 2024 β˜• β˜• Hot Chocolate Run 2024 β˜•

The Hot Chocolate Run, also known as "America's Sweetest Run", is an event that originated in Chicago in 2008. It now takes place in 16 cities across the US. The 5K, 10K, or 15K race begins in Grant Park and ends at Buckingham Fountain. The 30,000 + participants run past Chi-town's most iconic landmarks, including Maggie Daley Park, Jay Pritzker Pavilion, James R. Thompson Center, Chicago City Hall, Chicago Board of Trade, McCormick Place, Soldier Field, the Field Museum, and more! The money raised by the race supports St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

On Sunday, November 3rd, Leyden's students were there en masse to show their support! 215 members of East Key Club, East and West Service Clubs, East HOSA, East NHS, and East SHS cheered on the runners and passed out chocolate and water. The group was assigned an entire first aid station which was almost two blocks long. They cleaned up in record time, and the volunteer coordinators were so impressed with the group. It was a really successful day!

The History of Veterans Day

World War I – known at the time as β€œThe Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11th, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of β€œthe war to end all wars.”

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11th, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11th not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Treats for Troops

Folds of Honor and Rho Kappa (History Honor Society) collected candy during the week of November 4-8 outside of the Student Activities Office during the lunch periods. They will send over 30 pounds of donated candy to the Soldiers' Angels organization, and they will ship the candy to troops and veterans all over the world. We salute everyone who gave candy towards this most deserving cause.
