Pledge of Allegiance
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the Hahn Intermediate Student Council, which is comprised of nearly 30 passionate and dedicated students representing each class. Under the guidance of Ms. Janessa Woodrich, Mrs. Sydney Dawson, and Ms. Laura Ferguson, Student Council members have had an incredible start to the year. So far, they’ve volunteered at the Fleece and Thank You event, gathered toys for Pile the Aisle and adopted a family for Christmas. Looking ahead, they are excited to implement new initiatives, including adding a food bank next to the school's Free Little Library, volunteering at assisted living homes and more. Students are committed to making a positive impact both within their school and in the wider community.

Siple nurse selected as January Kids First recipient
Licensed Practical Nurse LeeAnn Bednarski has been named as the January recipient of the Kids First award.
Each month, administrators nominate a DCS employee or contracted staff member who best exemplifies what it means to be “Kids First.” Winners receive a $100 Visa gift card thanks to Mark Owen, owner of MEEMIC insurance, and a certificate. The winner is chosen at random.
LeeAnn was nominated by Siple Elementary Principal Mrs. Christy Flowers, who wrote:
"LeeAnn Bednarski has done an outstanding job serving as the school nurse at Siple Elementary. I must say though that if someone were to walk into our building they might see her jammin’ tunes, as she used to be a professional DJ on the radio and can always be counted on to have music playing in the office. Or they might see her hosting a “Girl Party” with snacks for a special little girl with diabetes that needs a sugar boost in the afternoon. You might find her “shopping” in the closet for clothes when a student needs to change. LeeAnn might even answer the phone when you call, just putting her school secretary experience to good use as well. I think the title “Jack of All Trades” may suit her better, but at Siple we call her Nurse B.
LeeAnn takes the health and well-being of our students very seriously. Siple Elementary has a special population that includes many students with advanced medical needs. These precious students have been receiving excellent care under LeeAnn’s watch. She has demonstrated strong communication skills with the parents and staff about the students in her care as well.
LeeAnn demonstrates exemplary professionalism, but she also provides fun, encouragement, hugs, laughter and friendship to all. Nurse B has become a very special part of the Siple Family.
For this reason, I very proudly nominate LeeAnn Bednarski for the Kids First Award. She is a true Siple STAR!"

Dental hygienist, lunch monitor and volunteer is January's Cardinal Spirit winner
Individuals can be nominated by any DCS staff member. Once a month, the building principal can submit one name for that month's drawing. We are pleased to announce that our winner for January is Heather Cairo, a dental hygienist who spends her days off working as a playground monitor at Gates Elementary. Heather was nominated by Gates Elementary Principal Mrs. Natalie Miller, who wrote:
"Although Heather is technically an employee of the district, spending her days off as a dental hygienist to work with students at Gates as a playground monitor, it is the time and effort she puts in as a volunteer that makes her a Cardinal Spirit community member.
If you happen to stop by Gates Elementary, you will notice that the main entrance doors to the building are painted with seasonal themes and positive messages. This artwork greets both students and visitors alike and is done by the talented Heather Cairo. It is fun to watch the excitement and wonder of the students each time she changes the windows to depict a new season.
Now in her second year doing this, she has expanded to include opportunities for enhanced learning and hands-on art experiences for the students themselves. With the adoption of a new curriculum, the third graders were doing a study of art and literature. When Heather heard about this, she went to the third grade teachers and offered to paint their classroom windows to match the artists they were studying as part of their reading unit, thus providing a visual connection for the students. Additionally, she has continued to go beyond and has developed quick art activities for the students to do that go with the stories they are reading.
Also, it should be noted that any time a child wants or needs to sit and chat or a little extra positive adult attention, Heather willingly sits and provides a genuine and caring ear. She is kind, caring, and talented.
I am so grateful to have Heather working and serving at Gates Elementary doing her part to make the day a little brighter for all those around her."
