K News Notes
Week of October 9, 2026
Things to Know
- Parents Pop In: Parents Pop In is this Tuesday, Oct. 13 8:00 am. It is an opportunity for you to come into the classroom and do an activity with your child. One guest per child. If a parent cannot attend we welcome a grandparent, an aunt/uncle, a special family friend, etc.
Oct. 30: Out of uniform/costume- Lower School students can wear a simple costume or orange/Halloween shirt and black. We do ask that costumes be school appropriate, not scary, no masks, no face paint or total covering of faces. No props. School shoes or tennis shoes must be worn. Please be sure your child can use the bathroom by themselves while in the costume. We thank you for your partnership in this fun, festive opportunity!
- Vis Give Day: During the week of Oct. 19 we will have a bucket in our classroom to collect student donations for Vis Give Day. The student donations can be coins or dollars. At the end of the week the LS class that brings in the most donations will get a pajama day.
-
Cooler Weather: The temperature is changing every day and cooler weather is arriving (maybe??). Fresh air is so important and we go out almost everyday for recess, phy ed, etc. Please send a labeled coat/sweatshirt as needed. It is more fun to play when we are warm and comfortable. Thank you!
Label Label Label: Time to get those Sharpies out! Help us help you by labeling jackets, sweatshirts, fleece pullovers, hoodies, hats, etc. Kindergarteners don’t always recognize their own coat/sweatshirt- even when they wore it that morning!! Please, please label the ¾ zip blue Vis sweatshirt if you have one. Kinders remove them a lot and many of them have the same size. Thank you!
- Paper Tubes: Please save toilet paper and paper towel tubes (empty) for us. In the coming months we will do several projects that use tubes and need to start gathering them now. Thank you!!

Last Week at a Glance
Language Arts/Morning Work: Last week we continued listening for rhyming words, llstened for beginning sounds, and added an ending to make a new word. We practiced the letters Tt and Dd- what’s the name, what sound does it make, what picture helps us-and we reviewed Aa, Cc, Ll. We found pictures that began with the sounds. For word work we did a sound sort. Small groups are working on reading or mastering sounds/letters. After listening to a story we drew the setting and characters.
Math: We practiced the strategy of drawing a picture to solve a problem: How many cows and chickens do you see if you see 8 legs? We drew the animals, counted the legs, and figured it out. We practiced printing 8-9-10. We played Race to Ten using cubes and special dice. We learned the game Clear the Board.
Religion: We learned a new prayer-Thank You God for Giving Us _______. It is a song.
Social Studies: : We talked about fire safety and fire fighters. We explored what firefighters do and what tools they use. We talked about fire safety at home and at school. We practiced stop, drop, and roll. We read Firefighters, A Visit to the Fire House, Stop, Drop, and Roll, and Daisy the Fire Cow. The firefighters visited us. We saw a firefighter dress up in his gear and we got to go in a fire truck. Thank you Mendota Heights Fire Department.
Comprehension: We drew pictures of the story order after we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Art: We made an Alebrijes. Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures depicting fantastical creatures or familiar animals. They can have horns, antlers, wings, fangs, fins, scales, and some have all at once. No two are exactly alike, but all alebrijes are painted with intense, vibrant colors and intricate patterns.
Spanish: We learned about the Alebrijes and colored one.
Morning Meeting: We did the Pass the Pumpkin greeting and tambourine movement for the activity. We continue sharing with each other. The morning work was playdoh mats-numbers, letters, shapes.
Chapter Book Read aloud: We started Magic Treehouse #1: Dinosaurs Before Dark.
