Winter sports roundup
Several winter sports have wrapped up their 2025-26 seasons, with multiple district athletes competing in state tournament play during the month of February in dance, nordic ski, gymnastics, boys swim and dive, wrestling and adapted floor hockey. Black History Month celebrations continue at district schools
At the end of February, students across the district continued their Black History Month celebrations. On Feb. 25 at Rush Creek Elementary School Kidstop, students in the student-led Poetry Club read poems of famous Black poets, including Sonja Sanchez’s “This is Not a Small Voice,” and Langston Hughes’ “Dreams.” They also shared information about author Richard Wright, astronaut Mae Jemison and writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin.
Fourth graders at Rice Lake Elementary School performed various songs at a Black History Month assembly on Feb. 27, attended by students in other grades and staff members. The fourth graders sang many songs, including “Lift every voice and sing,” “Ain’t gonna let nobody turn me round,” “Blackbird,” “A million dreams” and “We shall overcome.” Before each song, fourth grade speakers gave context on the history of the next song and what was happening in the country while the song was popular. The students learned about the Civil Rights movement and why the songs were important.
