HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
During School Site Council last week we discussed the issue of our campus being spread across multiple buildings and how that forces us to find other ways of building a strong student community through activities, clubs, the arts, sports, and events. We are proud of these highlights that do just that. Beyond these, this week included highly attended bake sales, tons of club meetings, and good-ol'-fashioned hanging out, after school, on the front lawn of Moxley. We know this is not school as many of your students are used to, but we are seeing strong bonds form among the student body as our community makes the best of a "different" situation.
CoLAB CLUB
As part of the nonprofit CoLAB, WHS has had its first CoLAB Club meeting! Nineteen students attended a three-hour session led by Ms. Mundy and four life science professionals. At this meeting, students developed scientific investigations and collected data to answer a guiding question. Over a networking dinner, students discussed their findings with each other and the professionals. Our next meeting is on Thursday October 26th, where we'll be discussing DNA extraction and practicing our technique with different types of fruit!
STEM WEEK
This week our Career & Technical Education (CTE) department is hosting "STEM" week- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math! Students throughout the school were challenged with building the tallest structure possible using spaghetti, tape, and marshmallows, during advisory class. This was a great team-building exercise and a way to show off our student's STEM skills!
HOMECOMING
Our Homecoming Dance was a huge success! 412 of our students (52% of our student population) came to show off their dance moves. Highly attended events such as these show the strong community we have and our student's desire to have fun. Thank you to the WHS Pride Committee (under the leadership of Ms. Ollero and Ms. Sulzman) for putting on this wicked cool event. Thank you to everyone who donated snacks!
ANNOUNCEMENTS
CALL-A-THON
We know there are a lot of changes at WHS for you and your student. As promised in the beginning of the school year, we are committed to connecting with every family of our 765 students to hear your concerns. This is a huge undertaking, but one we are excited to embark on and one we feel you and your student deserve. You should expect a call coming from the high school sometime within the next three weeks. Don't worry, you're student isn't in trouble, we're calling to briefly ask you how things are going at Moxley. Because these calls are being done by an army of volunteers (teachers, admin, coaches, interns) they will be spread throughout all times of the day. If you miss our call and have nothing to share, no need to call us back. But, if you miss us and want to express a concern or tell us how well things are going, please feel free to call us at 617-926-7760 or complete this form with your information and we will get back to you as soon as we can. As always, the bottom of every smore has a link to give us feedback on how we're doing as a school. It is critical that we hear from you if you have suggestions on how we can do better.
OPEN CAMPUS
Reminder: ONLY students in grade 11 and 12 may leave campus during lunch, if they are in good standing and sign out using the QR code. ONLY students in grade 12 have open campus during studies. All students in grades 9 and 10 must stay on campus all the time (freshman and sophmores don't have studies).
ATTENDANCE
We would like to take a second to clarify and reiterate our school-wide attendance policies.
Study halls & Absent Teachers:
Students who's teachers are absent should report to the middle school lower gym unless it is during L block. If the student does not sign in, the student will be marked absent and will not be allowed to request a change from absent to present after class is over.
Tardy:
If a student arrives after 8:30 AM, they will be marked tardy and/or absent by their teacher. Students must visit the attendance office in the main office before reporting to their scheduled class. If they do not sign in with attendance, they will be marked absent. If the student is marked absent, a call will go home to notify the family of the absence.
Absent:
If your student is not coming to school, you can either call the attendance office or submit the online absence form here. If your student has an excused absence because of a doctor's appointment, they must bring their doctor's note with them to school the next day or email the note to our attendance office.
Dismissals:
If your student is leaving school early for any reason, you can either call the attendance office or submit the online form. If this is an excused dismissal, notes must be submitted by the student in person or via email to the attendance office.
PICTURE RETAKES
If your student missed picture day or would like to retake their student photo they can do so on November 3rd. More information will be shared as the date gets closer.
