Dear Flint Community Schools Families and Friends,

As we head into Thanksgiving Break, I want to take a moment to celebrate some of the inspiring work happening across our district. Each week, our scholars and staff continue to show what it means to lead, serve, and strive for excellence—and I’m proud to highlight just a few of their accomplishments.

At Freeman Elementary, we’re proud to recognize two outstanding scholars for their exceptional academic achievement.
• Adrianna Brooks earned the highest Reading NWEA score in the school.
• Alfred Hasselhuhn achieved the highest scores in Math, Language, and Science.
Their hard work and dedication shine as an example to all.

Members of Boys to Mentors joined seniors from the Accelerated Learning Academy to volunteer at the North End Soup Kitchen. From sorting toiletries and making sack lunches to chopping vegetables and serving meals, 15 of our scholars gave their time and energy to support our community. Their leadership, compassion, and commitment to service embody the spirit of Flint Community Schools. See more about their time at the soup kitchen here.

At Durant Tuuri Mott Elementary, Special Education Teacher Shanay Kidd-Cole was recently featured on a local news station for creating a food pantry inside her classroom to support students in need. Her commitment to ensuring scholars have what they need to succeed is truly remarkable. Watch the interview here.

At Southwestern Classical Academy, staff members Ms. Stinson and Ms. Martin each received grants from Hand of Hope—one to support Reading Recovery and the other to promote equity and opportunity for the SWCA Varsity Cheerleaders. Their dedication to expanding educational and enrichment opportunities is making a real difference. Click here for more information about the grant.

As we enter this season of gratitude, I wish each of you a restful, safe, and meaningful Thanksgiving Break. Thank you for your continued support of our scholars, our staff, and our schools.

Warm regards,

Kevelin Jones
Superintendent
Flint Community Schools

State Immunization Requirements For The Protection Of All State Immunization Requirements For The Protection Of All

User uploaded image
open_in_new zoom_out_map

Did you know the very first vaccine was created back in 1796? It was the smallpox vaccine—and thanks to vaccinations like this, some diseases have disappeared altogether. Many others that were once life-threatening are now far less common and far less dangerous for those who are immunized.

Immunizations help strengthen and train our bodies’ infection-fighting cells. When we’re vaccinated, our immune system is better prepared to stop illnesses before they can make us sick or spread to others.

Because immunizations are so effective at keeping our communities healthy, Michigan law requires all school-aged children to receive their routine childhood vaccines. This helps protect our scholars, staff, and families. Scholars must have an up-to-date immunization record—or a waiver—on file to avoid class closures. To schedule vaccinations, please contact your family doctor or the Genesee County Health Department at (810) 237-4540.

This is also a great time to consider getting your updated Flu or COVID vaccine. These are especially important for anyone with a weakened immune system, as well as young children and older adults. You can learn more about childhood immunization requirements on our Health Services webpage at https://www.flintschools.org/page/health-services.

Did you know? Flint Community Schools offers a state-funded School Wellness Program that places a registered nurse in every building—and a clinical therapist in four of our schools. With the proper consent forms on file, these professionals can provide medical care and support for your scholar right during the school day. To ensure your scholar can access these services, please contact your school office or visit the Health Services page.

Together, we can keep our schools safe, strong, and healthy!
