Principal's Message - Mr. Stoney

Dear Mary M. Knight Families,

What an amazing start to our school year! As we wrap up our second week, I'm excited to share with you some of the wonderful things happening at our school.

First off, I want to thank all of you for your support in getting our students back into the swing of things. Your children have been showing up each day with smiles on their faces, ready to learn and grow. It's been a joy to see them reconnecting with friends and diving into new adventures in their classrooms.

Our teachers and staff have hit the ground running, creating engaging lessons and fun activities for our students. In the elementary grades, we've started our fall assessments, which help us understand where each child is in their learning journey. For our older students, we're working on getting our computer-based tests up and running smoothly.

One of the exciting things happening around campus is the introduction of pickleball during recess! Our students are loving this new activity, and it's wonderful to see them trying something new and having a blast while staying active.

We're also focusing on helping our students build important life skills like responsibility and problem-solving. Our teachers are using some new tools to help kids think about their choices and understand how their actions affect others. It's all part of our goal to help every student grow not just in their studies, but as caring and thoughtful individuals.

Looking ahead to next week, we have some fun events coming up:

  • Monday is Picture Day, so don't forget those smiles!
  • We're kicking off our preschool program, welcoming our littlest learners to the MMK family.
  • On Thursday, we'll have a special assembly to boost school spirit. Your kids might come home extra excited that day!
  • Our sports teams have games throughout the week. If you can, come cheer them on!

At Mary M. Knight, we believe in the power of GRIT – Growth, Resilience, Intensity, and Tenacity. We're encouraging our students to face challenges with a positive attitude and to always try their best. You might hear your children talking about being recognized for showing GRIT – we're celebrating these qualities each week!

Thank you for being part of our school community. Your support at home makes a huge difference in your child's success at school. If you ever have questions or just want to chat about how things are going, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Here's to another great week of learning and growing together!

Warmly,

Mr. Stoney

P.S. Don't forget to check out our school's social media pages for more updates and photos of all the fun happening at MMK!

Assistant Principal's Message - Ms. Bell

Hello OWL families,

What a fantastic second week here at MMK, and the weather couldn’t have been better! The excitement was high with our new pickleball court in elementary. Mrs. Chambless has been busy teaching the rules in PE, and our students are showing serious GRIT as they master their skills and take turns. Every day, they’re getting better—a real testament to their perseverance.

Big shoutout to our 11th and 5th graders for leading the pack in GRIT nominations! You’re setting the bar high, OWLs—keep it up!

As we gear up for our first full week in Week 3, a quick reminder to our secondary students: getting to school and class on time is key. Those few extra minutes really add up over the year. And yes, tardy checks will continue on Fridays—so let’s stay sharp!

Warm regards,

Ms. Sarah Bell

Assistant Principal

Cell Phone and Technology

We are a 1 to 1 school which means that all students are assigned a Chromebook for educational purposes as long as the internet and technology agreement forms are completed and returned to the teacher. Since each student has access to technology, no cell phones or technology are needed for educational purposes.

A reminder that the following are the procedures and expectations for cell phones and telecommunication devices at Mary M. Knight as aligned by district policy:

  • Grades PK - 6: All cell phones should be turned off and away during school hours.
  • Grades 7-12: Cell phones can only be used before school, after school, lunch, and passing periods. Cell phones should be off and away during class time.

Harvest Dinner & Auction Fundraiser

Do not forget to mark your calendars for this years annual Harvest Dinner and Auction event. This is a great fundraiser put on by our family groups of the Sports Boosters and the MMK Parent Teacher Organization to help raise funds that support our OWLS. Character Strong

This year, we will continue our journey of implementing Character Strong as our Social-Emotional curriculum at Mary M. Knight. Character Strong is a curriculum that provides universal instruction aligned to state and national social-emotional learning standards.

Over the past two years, we began at the elementary (grades PK-6) level, expanding to the middle (grades 7-8), and finally to the secondary level (grades 9-12) as a whole-district program. Future emails will share more specific focuses and information for each grade level as we begin.

Weekly above the line students

Last year, we had a theme of Above-The-Line and recognized student that were that demonstrated characteristics or actions of being Above-The-Line. This year we will continue our student recognition program as part of our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program with our positive referrals and weekly GRIT awards.

Positive Referrals - These are referrals that any staff member can fill out on a student who they feel are consistently demonstrating actions or behaviors related to our OWLS behavior expectations of Ownership, Willingness, Leadership, and Success. When a student received a positive referral, they are give a certificate, contacted home on what they did to earn it, and are posted in the school.

GRIT Awards - In the 2024-25 academic year, we're all about embracing 'Nurturing Resilience, Inspiring Excellence' as our guiding principle. We believe that having GRIT – Growth, Resilience, Intensity, and Tenacity – is key to creating a culture where challenges are seen as stepping stones to greatness. We want to foster a growth mindset in our students and ourselves, understanding that hard work and dedication can help us develop our abilities and intelligence. Student will be nominated weekly if they are demonstrating characteristics of GRIT. Student will receive a certificate and shared out.
