MSD Family Update
September 30, 2025
Letter from the Superintendent
What a fantastic September it has been! From Back-to-School Nights full of energy, to the tradition of Senior Sunrise, to the excitement of fall athletics, the first month has been packed with connection and celebration. Our second and fourth-grade students have been busy exploring science in hands-on ways through a partnership with the McMinnville Education Foundation, and our new Cosmetology pathway at the high school has welcomed its first cohort of students. Exciting things are happening in all nine of our buildings, and I am so grateful to work alongside this hard-working team.
One of the most important things our schools do each fall is dream about the year ahead and set goals to improve student outcomes. This year, we are partnering with our school board, district team, and building administrators to align these goals across the district, ensuring they are focused, meaningful, and powerful. In the next month, our building administrators will work with their teams to write continuous improvement plans that include action items around student achievement, attendance, school climate and culture, and family engagement. We look forward to your partnership in goal setting at fall conferences.
As we move into October, we are committing to enhancing a strong school culture built on kindness, respect, and a deep sense of belonging. When students feel connected to their peers, teachers, and the school community, they are more likely to thrive both academically and personally. By fostering an environment where every student knows they are seen, valued, and supported, we create a foundation for learning that goes far beyond the classroom. Together, through daily acts of care and inclusion, we can ensure our schools are places of safety, connection, and meaning for every child.
We deeply value our partnership with our families. If you ever have concerns about your child, whether academically, socially, or emotionally, we want to be a source of support. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your school’s team, together we can work together to find the encouragement, resources, and care needed to succeed and feel connected.
Dr. Kourtney Ferrua
2025-26 Superintendent
Back to School
The excitement was palpable among both staff and students at Duniway on the first day of school. The new sixth graders started at the regular school time and had a half day to get oriented around the school. Older students started after lunch.
Science Experiences
Second graders from all schools visited Miller Woods this month to explore habitats of living things from bees to frogs to flying insects to elusive animals that live among the trees. We are grateful to the McMinnville Education Foundation for making these experiences possible for our K-5 students across the district.
GrizzFest
Mac High has been doing an event-based Back to School night over the past few years. The evening features a chance to meet with teachers, mingle with other families over dinner, watch student performances, and see the variety of clubs, activities, pathways and sports available to students.
YouthTruth Survey Coming Soon!
Your voice and perspectives matter to us and will help us continue to improve as a district. This fall, we will be sending out a survey using YouthTruth, a national, research-based survey that collects feedback from students, families, and staff to help schools and districts improve their culture and programs. The survey will be open from October 27–November 21, and we will send out the link via ParentSquare.
Your student(s) will be asked to complete the survey during the school day. The survey asks about student experiences on topics like school engagement, relationships with teachers, and academic rigor. Student participation is voluntary and students can skip any question they don’t want to answer. All survey responses are confidential. If you would like to opt your student out of completing the survey, please contact the school principal.
We hope to have 100% of our McMinnville and Lafayette families participate. We will summarize the results and share them with you in January.
Conferences
We need your partnership! Parent–teacher conferences are an important opportunity to work together for your child’s success. They give us time to celebrate our strengths, discuss progress, and create a plan for areas of growth. Most importantly, they connect school and home so we can partner closely to support your child’s learning and well-being. We strive toward 100% participation for conferences in MSD.
Fall conferences will be held on October 22-24. Watch your ParentSquare for school-specific information about scheduling appointments or the times for arena conferences. The following applies to all students:
Wednesday, Oct. 22: Half day for students with NO late start:
Elementary students begin at 8 AM and release at 11:45 AM (bus pickup at release time)
Middle school students begin at 8:20 AM and release at 12:15 PM (bus pickup at 12:30 PM)
High school students begin at 8:30 AM and release at 12:15 PM (bus pickup at 12:45 PM)
Lunch will be provided
Students who ride buses should expect drop-offs to be roughly 3 hours earlier than the scheduled drop-off times. For more precise drop-off times, please use the FirstView app, which can track your student’s bus in real time.
Wednesday conference times: 4:00-8:00 PM
Thursday and Friday, Oct. 23-24: No school for students
Thursday conference times: 12:00- 8:00 PM
Friday conference times: 8:00-12:00 PM
Attendance Focus
Coming to school every day matters. Whether you are a pre-K student just learning about school or a high school senior thinking about college or a job, showing up every day is an important part of the learning process.
Young students are more likely to become adept readers if they come to school regularly. Older students are more likely to build habits that will make them successful in college or the workforce.
At all levels, regular attendance keeps students in the learning loop, with each lesson building on the last so they don’t fall behind. Being present daily also helps kids form strong connections with teachers and friendships with others, which can give them a sense of belonging and community. These social interactions support the learning process by building confidence, communication skills and resilience.
Most importantly, showing up prepares students for their futures. Employers value reliability, and daily attendance shows commitment, dependability and readiness for success.
Surprisingly, even a couple of missed days per month adds up. If you or your student need support in coming to school regularly, please reach out to your school’s counseling department.
Family Resource Center
Our team at the Family Resource Center kicked off the new school year by distributing more than 50 backpacks filled with school supplies to district families. More than 30 of these backpacks were provided by our community partner, Beyond Backpacks, which helps local families ensure that their students are ready to start school equipped with what they need to learn.
The resource center also has a food pantry, clothing closet, and laundry and shower facilities for families and students that need support. If you have nonperishable food, new or gently used clothing or new toiletries to donate, please call the center at 503.565.4225 to arrange a dropoff. If you need support, please call or visit the center at 1500 NE Baker Street on Mondays (11 AM-3 PM) Wednesdays (noon-3:30 PM) and Fridays (10 AM-2 PM).
In case you missed it: the resource center was featured on Channel 12 News on August 20.
Task Force Groups are meeting!
MSD is beginning the process to consider a school bond to provide for safety and security measures; athletic and playground facility needs; and the long-term durability of our school buildings. As part of this process, we are forming five task forces to explore district needs and opportunities. These task forces include
- Facilities Condition Assessments
- Students Services and ADA Compliance
- Safety, Security & Technology
- Athletic Facility Improvements
- Playground Improvements
If you have an interest or experience in any of these areas and would like to be part of a task force, please add your name to this form. Thank you!
