7th & 8th Grade Boys Basketball Results

Monday, 2/14 - Ithaca

The 7th grade B-Team ended up losing a close game to Ithaca tonight (lost by 6 points). The game was back and forth to start and then Ithaca pulled ahead by double digits. Late in the game we made a run and just couldn’t get over the gap from earlier in the game. Grady Galbraith lead the team with 22 points and Eddie Dearman had 4 pts.

The 7th grade A-Team played better tonight in a loss, but still had some struggles at times throughout the game. As a team our shots just weren’t falling on a consistent basis to get into any good rhythm. Wyatt Launstein had 13 pts, Gavin Schmidt had 7 pts and Xavier VanWagner had 4 pts.

Last night the 8th grade huskies lost a tough game to the Ithaca Yellow Jackets. The boys played tough, but Ithaca shot the ball well from the outside and pulled away in the second half. Gabe Laporte and Jayden Baumer added 6 points a piece, and Blake Lepla got into double digit rebounds. The boys head to Freeland for an away game Wednesday.

Wednesday, 2/16 - Freeland

Our 7th grade B-Team played with great hustle, but was up against a much bigger Freeland team. For the first half it was a back and forth type game, but in the second half we went cold shooting and Freeland got hot to pull ahead for the rest of the game for the win. Keep working hard fellas! Game leaders: Jordyn Smith: 7 pts, Caden Miller: 5 pts, Eddie Dearman: 4 pts

The 7th grade A-Team got off to a hot start scoring the first 12 points of the game before Freeland got on the board. Things tightened up in the 3rd quarter and Freeland eventually took a small lead to start the 4th. However, our Huskies got it together defensively and got a few huge turnovers and then 3 quick buckets to take the lead with less then a minute to go. The Huskies won with a score of 39-36. Coach Clark was very proud of how they stepped up when it mattered and closed out the game! Game leaders: Gavin Schmidt: 15 points, 12 rebs, 6 steals, Mason Lavigne: 10 points, 5 assists, Drew Genow: 7 pts Go Huskies!!!

On Wednesday the 8th Grade lost a very tough game to the Freeland Falcons. Both teams played intense defense, and scoring was very difficult. The game came down to the final seconds, but the Falcons were able to sink Free Throws and come away victorious by a score of 21-19. Hemlock was led by strong defensive efforts from Gabe Laporte and Blake LePla. Brennan Meyer added 6 points and Jack Ray 4 points in the loss.

You can send everything to galbraith@hemlockps.com.

Athlete Highlight - Wyatt Launstein

1) If you wear a jersey number, do you have a special reason that you wear that number?

  • Yes. I wore 23 because of Michael Jordan. Gavin took that number though so I wear 3 now.

2) What are some of your other hobbies?

  • Playing with my friends, video games, and football. Also when I get the chance I practice dribbling in the kitchen if I don't get to go to a gym.

3) What is your favorite movie?

  • I don't have a favorite movie but I have a favorite show, Big City Greens.

4) If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

  • Michigan. We have the perfect weather and no natural disasters.

5) Favorite college/pro team?

  • I like Michigan State. I also like the Utah Jazz.

6) Favorite teacher or staff member & why?

  • Mr. Siler is my favorite because he also coaches basketball.

7) Favorite school subject?

  • Social Studies

8) Favorite family recipe?

  • Lemon Orzo soup

9) Favorite color?

  • Red

10) Favorite candy?

  • Bottle Caps

11) What is your dream job?

  • I want to be an engineer. I also want to be an NBA player.

12) Do you think playing sports at Hemlock has made a difference in your life? Why?

  • Yes. If I didn't play sports I don't know what I would do with myself. I would probably just sit at home and do nothing. I also would have as many friends as I do right now.

13) Favorite sport memory?

  • My favorite sports memory is when I hit a contested turn around, 3 pointer buzzer beater from the corner. It happened in a Saginaw league too so I felt good about that.

Monday Memories

The library is celebrating its 80th year! We will be sharing 'Monday Memories' each week to remember our past, celebrate the present, and share happenings for the future. Special events at the library are being planned too. The library actually began in 1895 as residents took turns housing the collection in their homes for everyone to use. Over the years families moved making the mobile library difficult to maintain and the decision was made to donate the books to the public school system. Through the work of Loleta Fyan, the first state librarian of Michigan who pushed for more libraries to be opened and the residents of Richland Township, your library was formally established in 1942.
