Smore Spring Edition: Is It a Cold or Just Allergies?

Dear Families,

As spring blooms around us, it brings more than just sunshine and flowers—it also brings sniffles, sneezes, and stuffy noses. But how can you tell if your child is coming down with a cold or dealing with seasonal allergies? Here are some helpful tips to tell the difference and keep your child feeling their best!

Seasonal Allergies happen when the immune system overreacts to things like pollen, grass, or mold in the air.

Things to notice:

  • Symptoms often last weeks or months
  • They tend to show up at the same time every year
  • Your child may feel fine otherwise—no body aches or fatigue

Helpful tips:

  • Keep windows closed on high pollen days
  • Shower and change clothes after playing outside
  • Talk to your pediatrician about allergy medications

Colds & Viruses are caused by viruses that spread from person to person.

Things to notice:

  • Symptoms last 7–10 days
  • May include a fever and your child may feel sluggish or achy
  • Usually don’t follow a seasonal pattern

Helpful tips:

· Encourage hand washing

· Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and fluids

· Keep them home if they have a fever of 100.0 or higher and/or feel too sick for school

If you ever have questions about your child’s symptoms or need help deciding whether to keep them home, feel free to reach out to the Green Meadow health office or your family doctor.

Wishing you a healthy and happy spring!

Spring is upon us! And with that comes a much needed break from school for many of our students. Our days at Green Meadow are packed with learning yet “sprinkled” with brain breaks, body breaks and playful social interaction for balance. We recognize the benefits of taking breaks in school. Here are some reasons why downtime is crucial for kids outside of school and how downtime at home and over vacation will help your kids recharge. Turns out there are even some benefits of boredom! Additional SEL resources can be found on the Green Meadow Social Emotional Learning Resources website.
