Team Overclock 15083 from the Allen ISD STEAM Center recently competed at the FIRST Championship in Houston and earned the Design Award in the Lovelace Division. This global event brought together elite teams to showcase excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

In addition to receiving the Design Award, the team performed strongly in qualification matches and earned the rank of alliance captain. They concluded the competition as division finalists.

The Design Award recognizes teams that demonstrate industrial design elements by balancing aesthetics with function. Throughout the event at the George R. Brown Convention Center, students managed complex problem solving and communication while competing against international teams. This championship serves as the culminating event of the robotics season and celebrates student achievement in STEM.

Earlier this semester, the team was featured in an interview with WFAA to discuss their journey to the world stage. Students Danielle Hwang, Tito Magaña, Vedant Mohapatra, Caleb Clark, Johnathan Luu, and Marco Parada shared insights into their robot design and the innovation required for the FIRST Championship. The students demonstrated high levels of ownership and collaboration during their preparation for the global stage.

Overclock is coached by Julie Kiel, Principles of Applied Engineering teacher at Lowery Freshman Center, along with STEAM instructors Greg Burnham and Graham Gadd, who have supported the team throughout their successful season.

Congratulations to the Overclock robotics team for their impressive performance and for bringing home the Design Award from the world championship.

We were excited to welcome our future Allen Eagles from Vaughn Elementary to campus. Students had the opportunity to visit our studio, where they explored our AV classes, asked thoughtful questions, and got a behind the scenes look at how our daily show is produced. It was a fantastic group, and we loved seeing their curiosity and enthusiasm as they experienced a glimpse of what’s ahead for them at Allen High School.

Students in Allen High School’s Introduction to Culinary Arts course recently put their skills to the test by creating personalized “mug cakes.” After learning how to measure ingredients and scale recipes, students calculated and crafted their own desserts—blending math with hands-on culinary practice.

This activity is just one example of the engaging learning experiences within Allen High School’s Culinary pathway. Beginning with foundational skills in Introduction to Culinary Arts, students can advance through Culinary Arts and Advanced Culinary Arts, and ultimately gain real-world experience in the Practicum course. Throughout the program, students build industry skills, earn certifications, and explore careers in the food service and hospitality industry.

FREE Summer parenting group - Children's Hospital, Dallas FREE Summer parenting group - Children's Hospital, Dallas

Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) is a 4-session virtual group through TCHATT for parents and caregivers of children ages 7-17 who struggle with anxiety. SPACE is an evidence-based program shown to reduce child anxiety – even though treatment involves working with parents only. Sessions are practical and interactive, with reading and practice between meetings. This approach is effective because children with anxiety often rely on their parents to help manage or avoid their fears. In response, parents may adjust their own behaviors – either by doing certain things or avoiding others – to reduce their child’s distress. These responses are called accommodations, and they occur in over 90% of families with an anxious child.

Examples of accommodation include:

  • Responding to frequent phone calls or texts from a child during the school day.
  • Picking a child up early from school due to anxiety.
  • Repeatedly answering reassurance-seeking questions.
  • Checking or completing homework because the child feels anxious.
  • Speaking on behalf of a child in social situations due to a child’s anxiety.
  • Staying with a child during activities or events longer than developmentally expected due to the child’s anxiety.
  • Writing notes to excuse a child from class participation or presentations due to a child’s anxiety.

While these responses are well-intentioned, they can unintentionally maintain or increase anxiety over time. SPACE helps parents learn how to provide supportive responses while gradually reducing accommodation, with the goal of helping the child learn that they can cope with anxious feelings.

We are excited to share an incredible leadership opportunity for current juniors at Allen High School. Through our partnership with Rotary International, two students will have the opportunity to attend Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) this summer.

Camp RYLA is a weeklong leadership camp designed to develop the next generation of leaders. Students from across the region participate in activities focused on teamwork, communication, problem solving, and leadership development. Through workshops, group challenges, athletic activities, and team-building experiences, students learn how to collaborate with other leaders and build the skills needed to make a positive impact in their schools and communities.

This opportunity is fully funded through a scholarship valued at approximately $1,000 per student, and we are hoping to send two outstanding Allen juniors to participate.

Students who attend Camp RYLA often return with:

  • Greater confidence in their leadership abilities
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • A network of student leaders from across the region
  • A deeper understanding of how to positively influence their school and community

If you are a current junior interested in leadership, making a difference, or growing your confidence, we encourage you to apply.

Applications and additional information can be found here:
https://ryla5810.org/portfolio-item/2026-prospective-students/

Students can complete the application and submit it via email. Names must be submitted to the camp director by the first week of April, so we encourage interested students to apply soon.

If you know a student who would be a great candidate for this opportunity, please encourage them to apply.

This is an excellent opportunity to grow as a leader before your senior year and beyond.
