Week 12
October 27 - October 31, 2025
Message from Ms. Melgar
đ October Festivities and Literacy Parade Information
As we approach the final week of October, we have many exciting festivities and learning opportunities planned. Please help ensure that students continue following their regular evening routines so they come to school each day refreshed and ready to learn.
đ Literacy Parade â Friday, October 31
On Friday, October 31st, Multnomah will host our annual Literacy Parade! We encourage you to talk with your child about their favorite book character and work together to create a costume inspired by that character.
Students should arrive at school already dressed and ready for the parade, which will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. following BIC/SEL (Breakfast in the Classroom/Social Emotional Learning) time. If you prefer that your child not participate in or view the parade, please notify your childâs teacher so we can make alternate arrangements.
đ Costume Guidelines
-
Students should arrive dressed in their costumes, as teachers are not able to assist with dressing and parents may not come onto campus to do so.
-
Costumes should be comfortable, school-appropriate, and allow students to use the restroom independently.
-
If you are unsure whether a costume meets these expectations, please have your child try it on at home over the weekend.
-
If your child may be uncomfortable wearing the costume all day, please send a change of clothes and appropriate footwear that they can change into on their own.
đ Parade Details
The Literacy Parade will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Families are warmly invited to attend and may also come dressed in school-appropriate attire to join in the fun and celebration.
đ DĂa de los Muertos & Pumpkin Book Displays
Following the parade, families are invited to visit Room 10 (Parent Center) to view the beautiful DĂa de los Muertos altars and our Pumpkin Book submissions on display.
đ¸ A Friendly Reminder
While attending the parade, please remember that you may only photograph or record your own child(ren). For privacy and safety reasons, we ask that you do not post images or videos of other students on personal social media accounts. Thank you for helping us keep our young eagles safe!
Diwali
Celebrating Diwali at Our School
Last week, some of our scholars joined in celebrating Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights. Diwali is a vibrant and meaningful celebration observed by many people around the world, especially those from Indian, Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and some Buddhist traditions.
Weâre so grateful to the parents and students who volunteered as guest speakers to share their knowledge and experiences, helping our classes learn more about this beautiful festival!
Here are a few key things we learned about Diwali:
-
What it celebrates: Diwali symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Many stories are associated with it, including the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom after defeating a demon king, as told in the ancient Ramayana epic.
-
When it happens: The celebration lasts for five days and typically falls in October or November, depending on the lunar calendar.
-
How itâs celebrated: Families light oil lamps or candles (diyas), decorate their homes with colorful rangoli patterns, exchange gifts and sweets, wear new clothes, and enjoy fireworks. Itâs a time of joy, reflection, and togetherness.
-
Cultural significance: Beyond the festivities, Diwali highlights values like hope, renewal, forgiveness, and generosityâreminding us all of the light we can share with one another.
We invite you to share this video with your children to continue the learning and celebration at home!

Field Trips
đ Field Trip Reminders
Please remember that for field trips, students should come to school dressed in their field trip shirts, wearing comfortable walking shoes, and bringing their reusable water bottles. Snacks are always a great idea!
Students are not allowed to bring cell phones on field trips to take pictures. Field trips are treated just like a regular instructional day. If students bring a cell phone, it must remain off and safely secured in their backpack at all times. Students may not use cell phones on the bus or during the trip. Please note that if a phone is lost, staff will not be responsible for locating it â send phones at your own discretion. Thank you for your support and understanding!
This weekâs field trips:
-
Wednesday, 10/29/25 â Oran/Perez
-
Thursday, 10/30/25 â Ramirez/QuiĂąones
Parent Workshop
Thursday, 10/30/25
This week Ms. Maciel continues with our parents on her journey on PBIS. She will be focusing on community circles. Please join us if you are able at the Parent Center on Thursday from 8:30-9:30. It is also a great time to build community with some of our parents.
Literacy Parade
Friday, 10/31/25
Please scroll back to the top of the newsletter to read the letter and details about the Literacy Parade. Families are welcome and encouraged to dress up and join the fun!
Parents may enter the campus once students go to their classrooms in the morning, at approximately 8:05 a.m. Cones will be set up to indicate where each class will be seated. Please plan to stand behind your childâs class, not in front, to ensure everyone can enjoy the parade view.
After the parade, parents are invited to visit Room 10 to view the DĂa de los Muertos altar and Room 11 to pick up their Pumpkin Book projects. Please remember to take your pumpkins home so you can enjoy them for Halloween!
Candies/Goodie Bags
If you are sending candy or goodie bags to share with your childâs classmates for Halloween, please be sure to include all students in the class. Contact your childâs teacher for the exact count.
Parents, please remind your children not to eat any treats at school. Wait until they get home and review their goodies with you. This helps ensure that students do not consume anything they may be allergic to or that could be harmful in any way.
Shirt/Sweater Order
If you are hanging onto your school spirit or Class of 2026 order, please submit them asap. The final day we will accept them is November 3rd. No late orders will be accepted. Don't miss out. This will be our only opportunity to order this year.
