Blackmore fourth grades learns about kids in business
Fourth grade students at Blackmore Elementary read "Kids in Business" and put their reading skills into action and applying concepts to real life. They hosted a lemonade stand before school the week of September 22-26, 2025.
Students made signs to advertise the lemonade stand, were scheduled to work shifts to help with advertising and running the lemonade stand each morning. They sold bottles of water with either a lemonade or strawberry lemonade flavor packet for $1 that students could enjoy during the school day.
"They are learning about running a business and we are tying in money and math skills like addition and subtraction, so they are really getting a lot out of it," Blackmore Fourth Grade Teacher Hayden Rhodes said.
They sold out of lemonade and strawberry lemonade packets before it was time to close their stand on the first day, so they restocked to be prepared for the rest of the week. The money raised will be used to purchase items for the students to enjoy during recess.
Blackmore fourth grade learns about assistive communication devices
Blackmore Elementary’s fourth graders are diving into an inspiring story this fall with their current read-aloud, Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. The book tells the story of Melody, a young girl with cerebral palsy who cannot walk or talk but is exceptionally bright. With the help of a special communication device called a MediTalker, Melody shows the world just how much she knows.
To connect the story to real life, Blackmore’s speech-language pathologists (SLPs) visited the fourth-grade classrooms to demonstrate communication devices and share how they support individuals who cannot use their voices in traditional ways. A classmate who uses a communication device even demonstrated firsthand how the technology works.

Working in groups of three, students were challenged to invent a product that could solve a real-world problem. Each team had to name their product, identify the problem it addressed, and explain how it worked. They also created a diagram, determined their target audience, and outlined how they would use a $10,000 investment from the “Sharks” to launch their business.
Grandview students join Student Leadership Team
Fourth and fifth grade students were given an opportunity to be a part of the Student Leadership Team. Monthly Crisis Drills
Each month, our schools practice a safety drill to make sure everyone knows what to do and where to go if an emergency situation arises. October's drill is an Evacuation Drill. An evacuation would be called in an instance where something is unsafe within the school. All students and staff will evacuate to a pre-determined location, called a rally point, which is a safe distance from the building. It is important for students and staff to know where this rally point is so they are able to safely evacuate the school if the need ever arises.

Nurse's Notes
El Dorado USD 490 is dedicated to ensuring the health and well-being of our students with vision, hearing, and dental screenings available at all schools. USD 490 partners with GraceMed Dental for dental screenings and cleanings for all USD 490 schools. Additionally, the Lion’s Club provides vision screenings for Pre-K through 1st grade students. Our nursing staff conducts required vision and hearing screenings for all students, in alignment with state regulations.
Dental Screening: a visual examination of your student’s teeth and gums to assess oral health. This is a fast exam where the dental team uses a light and mirror to examine the student’s mouth. No other procedures are done.
Dental Cleaning: Dental hygienists provide dental cleanings, fluoride varnish and sealants. No x-rays, exam, or restorative services such as fillings or tooth removal will be provided.
Hearing screenings in schools are a crucial component of early intervention for potential hearing loss. Hearing screenings can help identify hearing difficulties early on, minimizing the potential impact on academic performance, speech, and language development.
If further evaluation is necessary, Dr. Angela Bateman, Butler County Educational Audiologist, will provide free audiological evaluations to ensure students receive the appropriate care and support.
Vision screenings in schools are brief examinations to identify potential vision problems or eye conditions in students. The primary goal is not to diagnose vision issues, but to identify students who require a more comprehensive eye exam.
Please note that school vision screenings do not replace annual eye exams.

It's Cool to Walk to School
The It's Cool to Walk or Bike to School event sponsored by El Dorado Working on Wellness (EWOW) kicks off September 15, 2025 and runs through October 17, 2025. But any time is a good time to walk or ride a bike!
Children who exercise do better in school!
It improves concentration, memory, and classroom behavior. Regular exercise promotes positive mental health, builds strong bones and muscles, reduces the likelihood of developing obesity, decreases long term risk factors that can lead to chronic diseases and promotes better quality of sleep.
Walking and riding to school helps teach good safety habits, how to cross the street, watch for cars, and ride your bike on the correct side of the street.
Prizes: For every five (5) days your child walks or rides to and from school, they will be eligible to win water bottles, pool passes to the city pool, and other prizes.
Log Slips: Please turn in to the school office your walking/biking log slip showing every five days you walk/ride your bike to school! Log slips (that can be cut apart) are on the back of the attached flyer.
Buddy System: New this year - exercise with your buddies! Challenge yourselves to walk/ride every day together.
Route Map: Visit the USD 490 website at www.usd490.org to help you determine a safe route to school. Click on Enrollment, and scroll down.
Questions?: Have questions? Call the YMCA at 316-320-9622.
Dates: This program will begin on Monday, September 15 and end on Friday, October 17.
Who is behind this initiative?
Since 2014, EWOW (El Dorado Working on Wellness) has been a wellness initiative by organizations and individuals who want to encourage a healthy lifestyle for our youth. It focuses on healthy eating, education, exercise, and more - all contributing to overall health. Organizations include USD 490, El Dorado YMCA, Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital Foundation-Mary K.
