May Lifeline: Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence
"I recognize, experience, and appreciate the beauty around me and the skill of others, and it inspires me."
Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence means noticing and enjoying the amazing things all around you—and feeling something special because of them.
It can show up in a few different ways:
- Beauty - You might notice a colorful sunset, a beautiful song, or even a cool pattern in math. It makes you feel happy, calm, or full of wonder.
- Excellence (Skill or Talent) - You might see someone play a sport really well, create awesome art, or solve a tricky problem. It makes you think, “Wow, that’s amazing!” and might even inspire you to try your best too.
- Kindness & Good Choices - You might see someone help a friend, include others, or do the right thing. It makes you feel proud, inspired, and want to be a better person.
Dear Boone Meadow Families -
As we turn the calendar to May and look ahead to the final stretch of the school year, it feels especially fitting to focus on our LIFELINE of the month: Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence. This is such a meaningful time to pause, reflect, and notice the growth and accomplishments of our students and staff. From the joy of learning to the beauty of blooming trees and springtime around us, there is so much to appreciate and celebrate together as a community.
A heartfelt thank you to our PTO and all of our volunteers for an outstanding Boone Meadow Bash last Friday. It was a high-energy evening that truly showcased the strength and spirit of our community. We are also grateful for your incredible support of the auction—your generosity makes a real difference. If you haven’t already been contacted, staff members will be reaching out soon to coordinate the experiences that were purchased.
As we head into the weekend, here are a few important highlights:
- All-School Field Trip – Holliday Park (May 20) - We are excitedly preparing for this special, shared experience for all of our students. A few classrooms are still in need of chaperones, so if you hear from your child’s teacher, please consider joining us. Permission slips will be sent next week via ParentSquare and should be completed as soon as possible. Thank you for helping us make this day both memorable and meaningful for our students.
- Boone Meadow Voices Concert - Our Boone Meadow Voices will perform on Tuesday! They will share a daytime run-through with the school before their evening concert at ZWEST. We wish our talented singers the very best as they showcase their hard work and dedication.
- Incoming Kindergarten Playground Meet & Greet (May 7, 5:15–6:15 PM) - We look forward to welcoming our incoming kindergarten students and their families for a casual meet and greet on the playground. This is a wonderful opportunity for our newest Boone Meadow learners to begin making connections ahead of the fall.
- NWEA Assessments (K–2 Only) K–2 students will complete their NWEA assessments in the next couple of weeks. These assessments are beneficial as one additional layer to help understand each child’s growth and guide our instruction moving forward.
- School Supply Pre-Orders Now Open - Planning ahead for next year? School supply pre-orders are now available for your convenience! Supplies can be delivered directly to Boone Meadow, making back-to-school preparation simple and stress-free. Please note this is a service provided for families—no profit is made by the school or PTO. You’ll find ordering details and links included below.
- Family Input Survey - The survey is open until May 11th. Click here to open and to share your feedback: BME Family Input (Spring 2026) - optional – Fill out form
Thank you, as always, for your partnership and support. May is a special time of celebration, reflection, and connection—and we’re grateful to share it with all of you.

Spring Identification for Advanced Curriculum
The Indiana Department of Education requires school districts to identify gifted students and provide them with appropriately differentiated curriculum and instruction. In ZCS, we consider ability and achievement data of all students each spring to identify any who may need advanced curriculum and/or instruction. This spring our team of teachers, licensed in gifted education, will look at all data to make sure that we understand the needs of each student.
Our school district is committed to continuous progress for all students, regardless of designation. Accelerated content is common in our classrooms as are heightened expectations, instructional levels and high-achieving peers. Whether or not a child is identified as needing advanced curriculum, our teachers are committed to regular assessment of skills and knowledge and matching experiences to challenge each child and help him or her make maximum academic growth.
For students currently in grades K-3: Programming at the elementary level is based on student need for acceleration and enrichment within a cluster group in a general education classroom and not on labels. All student data is reviewed each year to look for several indicators that a child needs advanced instruction in order to grow academically. Our identification team looks at achievement (NWEA), ability (CogAT) and teacher observational data (KOI/SIGS). Since these vary from year to year with young students, we re-look at every student each spring. Students who receive AC services this year will continue to receive those next year. Parents of newly identified students will be notified by June 5th if their child has been recommended for more advanced curriculum. If your child was not identified through our extensive process, parents/guardians may appeal the decision. Parents/guardians can complete the appeal process by June 15th. Forms are located on the Academics tab of our website under “Advanced Curriculum” Click HERE
For students currently in grade 4: All students are considered and more formally identified for high ability each year throughout middle school where they are placed in a class with high ability curriculum. Our identification team considers either achievement (NWEA) or ability (CogAT) when making decisions. Students who receive AC services in elementary will not receive notice and students will automatically be placed into high ability classes in middle school in their identified area. Parents of newly identified students will be notified by June 5th if their child has been recommended for differentiation based on the need for accelerated instruction and curriculum. If your child was not identified through our extensive process, parents may appeal the decision. Parents can complete the appeal process by June 15. Forms are located on the Academics tab of our website under “Advanced Curriculum”: Click HERE
Note: If your child is currently identified and receiving more advanced curriculum in grades 1-4, you will not receive an email because this placement will continue for the next school year.

Lunch Guests & Reservations
Lunch Guests
We are ready to welcome lunch guests! Students and their guests will have lunch at designated locations in the front lobby area. Please no more than 2 guests per student due to limited space. So that others may have the opportunity, we ask that you not sign up more than 1 time per month. As we implement this new system/procedure, we will limit availability the first two weeks to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday visits.
Here's how it works:
- Sign up for a reservation in advance using this link: https://outlook.office365.com/owa/calendar/BMELunchSchedule@zcsk12in.onmicrosoft.com/bookings/ When you sign up, please be certain to complete all fields requested.
- Bring a photo ID and arrive 5 minutes early (lunch times are listed on the signup form link above).
- Your child will meet you in the front office area when they are ready.
- HAVE FUN!
Visitors and Volunteers
During the school day, all volunteers are expected to check in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer's first volunteer experience, the individual must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check.. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days before the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state-mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee for the full background check which will expire after 5 years.
During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government-issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.
