Month of the Military Child Month of the Military Child

zoom_out_map

April is dandy because it is Month of the Military Child.

The dandelion is a symbol used to represent the resilience and adaptability of military children who, like dandelion seeds, are often uprooted and replanted across the world, yet thrive wherever they land. Purple is the color for Month of the Military Child, because it is a combination of all of the colors that represent the U.S Military forces blended together.

In honor of the Month of the Military Child at NB, each Tuesday in April our morning announcements will be led by our Military Students. WE will also play music from a branch of the military each of these days. Additionally, NB is excited to Purple Up every Thursday throughout the month, and we will also have a school wide Purple Up Duck Hunt on Thursdays for all NB students. Please also check out the beautiful dandelion with the names of our military children displayed on the media center window throughout the month.

Day of Silence: Day of Silence:

The high school GSA will be holding their annual Day of Silence event during school on Monday, April 14th. The Day of Silence is a national student-led event that happens in April of every year. Students who voluntarily choose to participate remain silent for the day to raise awareness of the harassment and bullying that LGBTQ+ students face in schools across the country and the world or can wear purple. The event is for students only. Those who wish to participate should have already signed up based on the directions in the announcements this past week.

Junior Parking Junior Parking

The second round of junior parking applications closed yesterday and students were selected today via lottery to receive spots. Students who were selected will be notified Monday and can pick up their parking pass and pay their fee on Tuesday 3/18 during Opportunity Period.

Clinical Corner Clinical Corner

Happy April Fool's Day last week! People underestimate the power of humor and its effects of their mental health. In an article by the Mayo Clinic, “Stress Relief From Laughter? It’s No Joke”, it discusses how laughter is a great form of stress relief, among other positives. Drag your teens/students into this mission of laughing as well so they reap the benefits!

Laughter induces physical changes in your body. Short term benefits include:

  • Stimulate organs-laughter enhances your intake of oxygen which stimulates organs and releases endorphins.

  • Activate and relieve your stress response-Laughter fires up and then cools down your stress response which can give you a nice relaxed feeling.

  • Soothe tension-Laughter can stimulate circulation and muscle relaxation which can help alleviate stress symptoms.

The article promotes laughter for the long haul. Here are some of the long term benefits:

  • Improves your immune system-it reports that negative thoughts can decrease your immunity but on the contrary, positive thoughts and laughter can help prevent stress and more serious illnesses.

  • Relieve pain-Laughter actually causes your body to release its own natural painkillers

  • Increase personal satisfaction-Laughter can help you cope better and connect/bond with others.

  • Improve your mood-Laughter can help decrease anxiety and depression, make you happier and improve your self-esteem.

How do you bring more laughter into your life? You can try to be around people who make you laugh, or put memories in your office or bedroom that make you chuckle when you remember them. Social media is good for funny memes or videos or you can peruse an old fashioned joke book. Lastly, laughter yoga has been around for a while, and while it may seem forced at first, it can turn into spontaneous laughter.

So give laughter a try-especially if it has the power and potential to do all these good things! Might be a good day for a fun joke or prank! For the complete article, click here.
