Parker’s annual Play-A-Thon was a record-breaking success this year! The Play-A-Thon is Suzuki Strings’ biggest fundraiser, and it helps make our 47th Annual Suzuki Workshop possible—inspiring young musicians, one note at a time.
Our goal was to raise $25,000… and thanks to the generosity of our Parker community, we didn’t just meet that goal—we exceeded it! Together, we raised $27,505, the most ever in the history of this event. What an incredible milestone!
A huge thank you goes out to:
-
All parents, families, and friends who donated—your support makes a direct impact on our students’ growth as musicians.
-
Our amazing volunteers, staff and Parker Friends who gave up a Saturday morning to organize and support this event.
-
Annie Mulligan, who captured the beautiful photos below of our pajama performing students.
The kids had an absolute blast playing their instruments in their PJs—and yes, I even joined in on the fun a little myself! 😊
If this is your first time hearing about the Play-A-Thon and you’d still like to contribute, you can donate here: https://givebutter.com/play-a-thon-25.
On behalf of our Parker community, thank you for making this year’s Play-A-Thon a celebration of music, joy, and generosity.
Upcoming Chat & Chew
Our first official Chat & Chew session is tomorrow! These gatherings are a chance for me to sit with parents as a whole group, share quick campus updates, and provide an open forum to bring clarity and understanding around our goals and vision. It’s also an opportunity for the community to voice questions or concerns in a respectful and professional space.
To streamline the process and ensure all voices are heard, we will be piloting a Padlet board where families can post questions both before and during the session. This tool may also serve as a campus-level platform for “shared wonderings,” preventing important conversations from being lost in timelines or muted due to multiple posts. We’ll test this system from this session through October’s Chat & Chew to gauge its effectiveness.
You can add your questions here: Parker Community Padlet (See below for screenshots on how to adjust your name for a post if you do not want to sign up for a free account.)

A New Direction for Behavior at Parker
This school year, Parker has taken a new approach to supporting student behavior. In the past, when classroom behaviors became repetitive or disruptive, teachers would often call an assistant principal, which frequently led to a disciplinary action such as lunch detention or after-school detention.
What we have learned, however, is that many of the behaviors we see at Parker are connected to student anxiety, challenges with conflict resolution, and even lack of sleep. Research shows that addressing these root causes through Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) interventions can be more effective than direct discipline alone. SEL helps students reflect, regulate emotions, and build problem-solving skills that last well beyond the classroom.
Here’s how the process works:
-
Classroom first: Teachers are expected to handle low-level misbehaviors in their own classrooms.
-
SEL intervention second: If behaviors become repetitive or disruptive, teachers call for support from Ms. Carlock or Ms. Olivares, who provide immediate SEL intervention. They hold constructive, reflective conversations with students to help them reset and return to learning.
-
Administrative action last: Only behaviors that are serious or extreme are redirected to an assistant principal or the principal.
The results so far are encouraging. By this point in the year, we would normally have seen dozens of detentions issued. Instead, there have been fewer than 10 detentions campus-wide. Students are learning accountability, but in ways that strengthen their love for learning and help them see Parker as a place of belonging—not just punishment.
This shift aligns perfectly with our Parker PROUD values: Prepared, Respectful, On Task, United, and Determined. By prioritizing SEL before discipline, we are building a school culture where students can thrive academically and socially, while also taking ownership of their choices.
Curriculum Updates
Curriculum Night
Science of Reading Update
After reviewing our current curriculum, we have decided to adopt Really Great Reading as our Science of Reading (SoR) curriculum for K–2 classrooms. For 3rd–5th grade, teachers will continue using the HISD-developed Science of Reading curriculum for Tier I instruction, with supplemental resources like Scholastic and MyOn to support comprehension. Really Great Reading may also be used in 3rd–5th grade for intervention purposes.
For those new to the term, the Science of Reading is a body of research on how children best learn to read. It emphasizes explicit, systematic instruction in phonics, decoding, and language development—helping students not only “sound out” words but also build the skills needed for fluent and confident reading.
This important shift was made possible through the generous support of our PTO, who funded the purchase of Really Great Reading, since it is no longer an HISD vendor and cannot be purchased with campus funds. We are also deeply grateful to my PrinciPAL at Horn Elementary for donating some of their unused Really Great Reading materials to help us launch this effort at Parker.
For additional information about the Science of Reading course at Parker, please feel free to contact Heather Grosso our campus Teacher Specialist.
Independent Review Team (IRT) Visit
We are now in the Independent Review Team (IRT) window from September 22 – October 9.
The IRT is a district team that visits every HISD campus four times a year to observe a select number of classrooms. The number of classrooms reviewed is based on campus size, and the team uses the district SPOT observation form—the same tool used for teacher evaluations—to measure the quality of instruction.
Important to know: The IRT visit is random. We are only given the window of time they may arrive, not a specific date. The team always arrives at the very start of the school day and may remain throughout the instructional day to complete their review.
The purpose of IRT is two-fold:
-
To ensure that campus administrators are calibrated with the district in evaluating high-quality instruction.
-
To measure the overall level of classroom instruction taking place on a campus.
This is a great time to showcase the incredible teaching and learning happening at Parker! At the conclusion of each visit, the IRT shares campus highlights and areas for growth with the principal. We use this feedback to strengthen our instruction and celebrate the excellent work already happening.
Please note: IRT results do not impact individual teacher appraisals. However, they are tied to campus leadership appraisals and help guide how we continue to grow and support instruction across the school.
September is School Spirit Month 🎉
This month, we’re celebrating School Spirit Month at Parker! Every Wednesday in September, we encourage all students and staff to show their pride by wearing their Parker t-shirts. Let’s fill the halls with Parker blue and red!
Throughout September, we’ll also be learning what it truly means to be a Parker PROUD student. Parker PROUD students show strength of character and the courage to do what is right. Each week, we’ll focus on a different way to shine:
-
Week 1: LEAD by example by following all school and classroom rules.
-
Week 2: TAKE responsibility for your actions. If you make a mistake, reflect, apologize if needed, and do your best to make things better next time.
-
Week 3: HELP others—show you care by lending a helping hand.
-
Week 4: Show a POSITIVE attitude toward yourself, your classmates, your school, and the community.
Let’s come together to show our Parker spirit and practice being Parker PROUD all month long!
