News from the Principal 🤩 News from the Principal 🤩

Neabsco Families,

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Back to School Night! Your presence, engagement, and commitment to your child’s learning truly made the evening special. The strong turnout and positive energy in the building were a clear reflection of the partnership we share in ensuring that Every Student Thrives.

This year, our school is growing as a Leader in Me school, and it was inspiring to see so many of our students already living out the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been focusing on Habit #1: Be Proactive.

Being proactive means taking responsibility for our choices, focusing on what we can control, and acting with a positive attitude. We are proud of how our students are demonstrating this habit:

  • Choosing to solve problems with kindness and respect.

  • Coming to class ready to learn and taking charge of their own success.

  • Setting personal goals and working hard to achieve them.

We also want to give a special thank you to our 5th grade patrols for modeling leadership across the school. The flag patrol picture is included in this newsletter below as a celebration of how they are serving our community each day. From helping with arrival and dismissal to setting a positive example in the hallways, they are showing all of us what it means to lead by example. We are grateful for their dedication and for the way they represent Neabsco Stars with pride.

Please continue reinforcing Habit #1 at home by encouraging your child to use proactive language (“I can…” “I choose…” “I will…”) and celebrating the small steps they take toward being responsible leaders.

Together, we are building a school community where students lead, families partner, and staff inspire growth every day. Thank you again for your support and for making Back to School Night a wonderful success.

Flu 🤒😷🤧

Flu, what is it?

It is a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. There are two main types of influenza viruses: A and B. Each type includes many different strains that tend to change from year to year. The flu spreads mainly from person to person by droplets from the nose or throat that are released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated every year.

Flu symptoms

Flu symptoms usually come on suddenly. Symptoms can include fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headache, fatigue, and muscle or body aches. Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, but this is more common in children. Most people with flu recover within a few days to less than two weeks. However, some people might develop severe or life-threatening complications, like pneumonia.

How can flu be prevented?

There are actions to help protect yourself and are sick. If you are sick, limit contact with others as much as possible.

  • Getting a flu vaccine every year is the most important action you can take to prevent the flu.
  • Practice good hygiene.

    • Cover coughs and sneezes.
    • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If water is unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces

  • Stay home if you are sick to prevent spreading the virus to others. You can return to normal activities when, after 24 hours, the following are both true:
    • Your symptoms have improved overall, AND
    • You have no fever (without the use of fever-reducing medication).
  • Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them.

Who should be vaccinated against flu?

Everyone aged six months or older, with rare exceptions, should get a flu vaccine each year. Vaccination is especially important for people who are at higher risk of developing serious flu complications. Talk to a healthcare provider if you have questions about flu vaccines.

For more information about the flu, contact your healthcare provider. You may also visit VDH Influenza (Flu) in Virginia page or CDC Flu page

Interested 5th grade students can pick up a paper application form from their homeroom 5th grade teacher or school counselor, Mrs. Larimore. What is the Stars Supporting Stars Peer Mentorship program? This initiative gives our older Stars the opportunity to support younger students in grades K–4, not only by encouraging regular school attendance, but also by helping them grow socially and emotionally. Together, mentors and mentees help build a culture of care, connection, and trust throughout our school community. Here’s a glimpse of how it all began: Neabsco Stars Supporting Stars Video

Jump Out of the Zoo
zoom_out_map

🦉🐏🐷 How to Jump out of the Zoo🐂🦌🐨

People who build the zoo walls really need to know how high animals can jump. A jaguar can leap 10 feet high off the ground, and some kangaroos can rocket 20 feet through the air. An anteater, though, isn’t quite as bouncy…he probably needs just a 3-foot fence. Other animals might climb instead, so their walls had better be slippery. Good thing the giraffes can’t jump!

Wee ones: Which is higher, the antelope’s 8-foot fence or the anteater’s 3-foot fence?

Little kids: If a 6-foot anteater that tries REALLY hard can jump 3 feet, and you can jump 1 foot farther, how far can you jump? Bonus: A red kangaroo can jump 25 feet. If the stream around his pen is just 2 feet wider than that, how wide is the stream?

Big kids: If a red kangaroo makes 3 25-foot leaps in a row, how many feet does it travel? Bonus: If the zoo divides a 50-foot-wide square into 4 equal square pens, with a fence all around, a fence running through the middle back to front, and another through the middle left to right, how much fence does the zoo need?

Answers:
Wee ones: The antelope’s 8-foot fence.

Little kids: 4 feet. Bonus: 27 feet.

Big kids: 75 feet. Bonus: 300 feet total: 200 around the edge, then a 50-foot piece across and another 50-foot piece back to front.

Leader In Me Leader In Me

Leader in Me is a school-wide program that builds on the leadership, responsibility and goal-setting skills we already nurture every day. Rooted in the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, this curriculum gives us a shared language and tools to help students grow socially, emotionally, and academically.

Ask your child, to find out which 'Leader in Me' habit they are working on in their classroom and how they are implementing it in their days at school and at home!

Celebrating Your Child's Birthday Celebrating Your Child's Birthday

At Neabsco, we are doing our part to promote school health and wellness and following the PWCS Regulation 275-1 Wellness Plan. We all know birthdays are important to children. At school, children celebrating a birthday will be gifted a birthday pencil and their name and picture are announced on the Cafe Screens on the day and week of their birthday.

Sending a food treat to the classroom to celebrate can exclude children who have life-threatening food allergies and other dietary restrictions, who can be triggered to a medical emergency.

We are trying to make Neabsco a healthy and safe place for all of our Stars, so instead of sending in food treats, we have some additional ideas on how you can recognize your student on their birthday.

An alternative to food treats for your child’s birthday celebration at school:

· Pencils, erasers, fun stickers, temporary tattoos, stencils, stampers

· Small puzzles, Bubbles, fun superhero rings, rubber bracelets

· Donate a book in your child’s name to the classroom or school library

· Donate a game in your child’s name to the classroom

Please do not send balloons, flowers, or other celebratory bouquets to school for safety reasons.

Finally, please note, teachers can pass out birthday party invitations only if the entire class is invited. Parents are still welcome to send in small treats, although we would like to discourage items like donuts, oversized cupcakes, soda, and juice/juice boxes. Foods such as mini-cupcakes, cookies, sliced fruit or vegetables, etc., will be shared at lunch time. Food items must be store bought with a food label on them to avoid any allergic reactions.

We are looking forward to a happy and healthy school year. We appreciate all that our parents do to support their children in making healthy food and snack choices at home and at school.

Growing Readers Growing Readers

It was wonderful to see so many Neabsco families attend our Title 1 Annual Meeting and Back to School Night. A lot of exciting educational information was shared by our teachers and staff. If you were unable to attend our Back to School Night, please contact your teacher to get updates and expectations for this school year. Please make sure you sign up for conferences.

We have a few events coming up that will help you promote partnerships and support your scholar’s success.

  • PWCS Title 1 Family Camp will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at Hampton Middle School from 8:30-12:30.
  • Neabsco Family-Teacher conferences will be held on November 3, 2025

Here are some important ways to support responsibility at home from the Parent Institute and Title 1. Doing chores at home teaches children responsibility-and that pays off in school. Chores can help your child:

  • Develop school skills, such as following directions and timelines.
  • Feel invested in work and take pride in success.
  • Learn basic life skills, such as caring for clothes, toys, and keeping things organized and clean.

We hope to see everyone at these events. We want to thank you for your enthusiasm to support literacy and learning.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Carolyn Matthews Matthecj@pwcs.edu , Jessica Monahan Monahaje@pwcs.edu or Jessica Hesser Hesserj@pwcs.edu.
