🍎 Principal News 🍎
Malvern Families,
January is a time to refocus, reconnect, and continue growing together. This month, our scholars will learn about Habit #5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood, along with the character trait of Honesty. The goal is for our Red Hawks to build empathy, communicate respectfully, and make thoughtful choices. During the final week of the month, students will also take part in Kindness Challenge Week which will be a great opportunity to put these habits into action across our campus.
Families are reminded that Monday, January 19th is a student and staff holiday as Malvern honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King’s example continues to remind students of the importance of character, courage, and being the best version of themselves.
We are proud to be one school made up of many cultures, and families are invited to attend the Multicultural Night on Thursday, January 25th, from 5:30–7:00 PM. This evening is a celebration of the traditions, experiences, and strengths that unite the Malvern community.
Malvern appreciates the continued partnership of families as students learn, grow, and move forward with purpose together.
Proud to be a Red Hawk,
Inetra Nelson, Principal & Melinna Herrera, Assistant Principal
Inetra Nelson, Directora y Melinna Herrera, Subdirectora

Upcoming School Holiday
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, there will be no school on Monday, January 19, 2026, as we honor Dr. King’s legacy. This day reminds our students of the importance of strong character, courage, kindness, and striving to be the best version of themselves—every day, in every way.
Malvern's Multicultural Night
We hope you will join us for Malvern's Annual Multicultural Night on Thursday, January 22, 2026, 5:30p-7:00p. Come celebrate the rich cultures within our Malvern community! Your family is invited to wear traditional cultural clothing and walk the red carpet in our Fashion Show at the beginning of the evening.
Severe Weather Preparedness
It’s that time of year! ❄️ Please take a moment to review MISD’s inclement weather procedures so you know exactly where to find updates when winter weather rolls in. Staying informed keeps everyone safe and prepared!
January's Character Trait - Honesty
This month, our scholars are focusing on honesty through Leader in Me Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. Students are learning that honesty goes beyond telling the truth. It also means listening with empathy, understanding others’ feelings and viewpoints, and communicating respectfully. By practicing Habit 5, students are building stronger relationships, resolving conflicts thoughtfully, and learning to express themselves clearly and truthfully. We encourage families to support this learning at home by modeling active listening, asking thoughtful questions, and encouraging open, honest conversations.
The Great Kindness Challenge is Coming Soon!
The Great Kindness Challenge is a nationwide initiative that encourages students to practice intentional acts of kindness at school, at home, and in the community. Throughout the week, students will be challenged to spread kindness through simple, meaningful actions such as helping others, using kind words, showing respect, and including everyone. This experience helps build empathy, strengthens character, and creates a more positive and connected school community. Watch for more information in your scholar's Wednesday folder.
Student Well-Being
At Malvern, student well-being is a top priority. Throughout the year, our counselor provides age-appropriate lessons that help students recognize “big” feelings, identify trusted adults, and practice coping strategies. Each elementary campus also displays the required “You Are Not Alone” poster so students know support is always available.
Our approach to suicide prevention focuses on helping students:
- Manage their emotions
- Understand that tough moments are temporary
- Notice when someone may need help
- Know who they can trust
- Use healthy coping skills
- Find support when they need it
Thank you for partnering with us to support the emotional health of every Red Hawk. Please review MISD’s Suicide Prevention Parent and Guardian Newsletter by selecting the button below.
Visitors and Volunteers
MISD requires every visitor/volunteer to report to the office to sign in and receive a visitor badge. At the camera outside of the school, please state your name, show your ID, and explain why you are here at school.
A software system called “Hallpass School Visitor Management” is used to scan in visitors. A valid, unexpired state or government issued photo ID must be presented each time you visit, volunteer, or pick up a student. If you arrive on campus without your driver’s license, you will be asked to leave and return to campus when you have identification. A photocopy or photo on your telephone of your ID will not be accepted.
MISD requires that volunteers complete a criminal background check every school year. If you plan to volunteer anywhere in the building or chaperone a field trip, please complete the required volunteer application.
MISD will not offer a grace period this school year for you to complete your annual background check. All background checks must be completed and approved before you can serve on campus.
Hawk Squad Call to Action
Hawk Squad is a fun, high-energy volunteer program where we welcome students each morning with high fives, compliments, positivity, and enthusiasm as they head into class! Getting started is simple—just complete the standard MISD volunteer background check and fill out the form linked here. (Please note: by completing this form you are giving your personal information to a Malvern parent.)
In addition to morning greetings, we also help out at various school events throughout the year. Our goal is to grow Hawk Squad into a strong and lasting tradition—and we’d love for you to be a part of it!
Active members will have the opportunity to purchase an exclusive, custom Hawk Squad t-shirt to wear and keep.
We welcome everyone—dads, moms, grandparents, and more! If you're ready to have fun and make a difference, sign up and join the squad. We can’t wait to meet you!
