Keeping Up with Comm Arts
~ September 4, 2025 ~
Hello Comm Arts Family and Friends!
The first three weeks of the school year flew by fast. Grades were captured on Friday, August 29th, and are available via HAC as of Tuesday, September 2nd. Please review grades with your child(ren). Just a friendly reminder: Students must maintain passing grades, wonderful behavior, and attendance to remain Comm Arts students. Thank you for being our valued partners in education.
Thank you to those who attended Open House last week. It was great to see everyone who visited our campus.
Thursday, September 4th, is Senior Night. The evening will begin in the Taft Auditorium. After the presentations, parents and students will have the opportunity to visit with college admissions representatives.
Grades, Attendance, & Email
Students, you need to check your grades, attendance, and email regularly. If you notice any discrepancies in your attendance, please inform your teacher immediately. Also, when you're absent, make sure to check Schoology for information about the missed classwork. Some assignments can be completed at home, which will prevent you from falling behind. Parents, your partnership in monitoring your child's attendance and grades is highly appreciated.
Senior Update
Reminder: Prestige Portraits will be on campus in the LGI next Monday, September 8th, to take yearbook-only pictures. Seniors, stop by Ms. De La Rosa's room to reserve your picture time. Before taking your photo, please check in with your teacher so they do not count you absent. If you miss this opportunity, you can schedule an appointment at Prestige Studios by calling (877) 244-9873 or visiting local.prestigeportraits.com online. Please note that if you wish for your picture to be in the yearbook, it must be taken through Prestige Portraits before Thanksgiving break.

Homecoming Tickets
This year, our high school is using MORP. We will use MORP for purchasing tickets, answering questions, and sending notifications. Download the app MORP today. It is available on the Google Play Store and IOS App Store. It is important to turn on notifications to stay up-to-date on the latest information regarding Homecoming. Register for the Taft HS Homecoming Dance.
Students can add a credit card/debit card to their account for homecoming ticket purchase. A student's credit/debit card is not charged until they are approved to purchase their ticket. Once tickets go on sale, you will get one of the following messages: *Students can be approved to be part of the school but not approved to purchase tickets, for various reasons. Approval can take up to 24 hours*
- Approved: The student joins the guest list and receives a QR code digital ticket. The student's card is charged. The student gets a notification of the approval.
- Denied: The student's card is not charged and will remain in the student list. You will get a notification of the denial and why.
- Come See Me: The student's transaction remains on hold in the pending approvals list. The student is notified that he/she need to see the admin before approval.
*Student Purchasing Options
- Buy a single ticket. The student purchases a single ticket for themselves.
- Buy a ticket for themselves and a date who attends the same school. The student selects the name of his/her date from the student list. You will need their contact info and student ID number.
- Buy a ticket for themselves and a date who does not attend the same school. The student fills out this Google form, which will be placed in "Pending Status" awaiting administrative approval.
Ticket Sales will be as follows: ALL STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO SHOW ID AT HOMECOMING ENTRANCE.

September is Suicide Prevention Month - #BeThe1To is the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline's message for National Suicide Prevention Month and beyond, which helps spread the word about actions we can all take to prevent suicide. The Lifeline network and its partners are working to change the conversation from suicide to suicide prevention, to actions that can promote healing, help, and give hope. CAHS hallways feature flyers that promote well-being and resources for individuals to reach out for help when needed.
Ask - Research shows people who are having thoughts of suicide feel relief when someone asks after them in a caring way. Findings suggest acknowledging and talking about suicide may reduce rather than increase suicidal ideation.
Be There - Individuals are more likely to feel less depressed, less suicidal, less overwhelmed, and more hopeful after speaking to someone who listens without judgment.
Keep them Safe - A number of studies have indicated that when lethal means are made less available or less deadly, suicide rates by that method decline, and frequently, suicide rates overall decline.
Help them Stay Connected -Studies indicate that helping someone at risk create a network of resources and individuals for support and safety can help them take positive action and reduce feelings of hopelessness.
Follow-up - Studies have also shown that brief, low-cost interventions and supportive, ongoing contact may be an important part of suicide prevention, especially for individuals after they have been discharged from hospitals or care services.

Class of 2026 Pictures
To appear in the 2026 section of your yearbook, you must photograph with Presitge Senior Portraits. Book your appointment ASAP. To schedule your summer studio appointment, click HERE or call 1-877-244-9873—options 2, then option 1 for assistance.
Only pictures taken with Prestige will be in the yearbook. Please keep these things in mind:
- Ensure they list you as a Communications Arts student, not Taft.
- Our yearbook pose is a cap and gown, NOT a tux and drape. Be sure that the cap and gown you are given is WHITE with a red and white tassel, and for those in NHS, our stole is blue, NOT white. The yearbook pose is cap on, and you MUST BE DRESS CODE COMPLIANT. We will NOT be Photoshopping pictures.
- Yearbook ONLY sessions are free, but we encourage you to choose a package with a variety of outfits and poses to reflect your personality and interests.
- Be sure to have your pictures taken by November so you can be included in the yearbook. The sooner, the better, so you have time to retake the pictures if you are unhappy with the first session.
They will be on campus September 8th. Students will need to sign up ahead of time to reserve their spot.

Personal Communication Device Policy
Dear Students and Parents,
We would like to remind everyone of our No Personal Communication Device Policy during school hours. This includes cell phones, earbuds, smartwatches, and similar devices. This policy was implemented to comply with Texas House Bill 1481 and to support a focused and distraction-free learning environment.
However, we understand the importance of technology in education. Therefore, students are allowed to bring and use personal laptops for classwork, note-taking, and other academic activities as directed by their teachers. Content specific technology such as an Adobe equipped iPad for an Animation course will also be allowed while in that class. Like all other devices previously mentioned, they will not be allowed during passing periods, lunch periods or in non-applicable courses and academic activities.
Please ensure that laptops are used responsibly and only for educational purposes during school hours. Misuse will result in loss of this privilege. Devices including cell phones must be powered off and kept in student's backpacks.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a productive and respectful learning environment.
Sept 2025
Attendance Matters
High School Credits: Students are required by law to be in attendance for 90% of each class. If students' absences exceed 90%, they will lose credit for their class unless corrected through Attendance Recovery. Excused and non-excused absences count towards the allotted amount.
Health vs. EADN (Excused Absences - Non-Health -Doctor Note): Health absences do not count against a student's attendance. However, a student must be on campus for part of the school day and bring in a doctor's note. A doctor's note counts as an excused absence if a student is absent for the whole school day.
Here Comes the Bus
Safety
As a safety reminder, NISD does not allow food deliveries for students or faculty/staff members. Additionally, all students, faculty, and staff must wear their school IDs on campus for safety.
Here is the link for more information: Safety First, 2025-2026
Additionally, any visitors to campus will need to apply and pass a background check. This does need to be completed every year. It will not roll over. Here is the link to the background check: https://www.nisd.net/community/volunteer-mentor
If you notice anything unusual or a potential safety concern throughout the school year, please contact the NISD Safeline. The Safeline is anonymous and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

AI in Northside
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is defined as the intellect shown by machines which is based on the synthesized and predictive inferences of the information with which they are trained. Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that uses algorithms to produce new data, often in the form of images or text.
In Northside, we want to embrace and encourage the use of AI by students. For the safety of our students, important guidelines must be followed to help support learning.
Acceptable Use of AI:
- Students can use AI in a meaningful, safe, and responsible way, aiding in ideation, providing personalized feedback and tutoring, supporting research, and offering a wide range of assistive technology.
- Students can use artificial intelligence to complete assignments with permission and guidance from teachers.
- AI serves as a tool, not a replacement for your ideas, creativity, or critical thinking.
- To enable student use of AI tools, staff are responsible for confirming students meet all Terms of Service (TOS) requirements.
- Responsible AI use requires students to cite AI-generated content properly when included in assignments.
- Students should be aware of the potential biases and fallacies in AI-generated content.
- Students should be able to critically evaluate output for accuracy and bias.
Unacceptable Use of AI:
- Students must not use AI to deceive or harm such as including impersonation, spreading misinformation, or creating harmful content.
- Students must not use AI tools to violate privacy.
- Students must not use AI to violate academic integrity by cheating, or plagiarism.
- Students must not use AI to circumvent learning by avoiding learning objectives or substituting AI for original thought.
- Students will not use personal identifiable information when using artificial intelligence applications.
Consequences of Misuse:
- Misuse of AI tools may result in disciplinary action, including suspension of technology privileges or other appropriate consequences.
