A LOOK AT WHAT IS GOING ON AT MART I.S.D.
October 9, 2023
District News:
A Million Words Read
Mart Elementary 6th grader, Killian Narvaiz, has read over a million words! This bright young lady has already finished 17 books and had reached 1,032,943 words read since school started in August.
Panther Truck Back for Homecoming
Some may have recognized the purple and gold 1954 Chevy truck on display outside of the high school on Homecoming from parades of the past. Restored and loved by Butch Walker, Class of 1960, it was donated to the district upon his passing. The truck is still in great condition, and although it wasn't quite "parade ready", it made a great photo op for Panther fans such as Landry and Lynley Murphy pictured here.
Annular Solar Eclipse October 14th
Mart ISD has partnered with the Mayborn Museum to prepare students and staff for the two major ecilpse events that will take place this school year. The first event occurs Saturday, October 14th. That day, the area will experience an annular solar eclipse. This type of eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and Sun, but does not completely cover the Sun's disk. Instead, it covers most of the Sun, leaving its outer edge visible as a bright ring or “annulus” around the darkened Moon. Things to expect during an annular solar eclipse are:
- cooler temperature
- interesting shadow play
- sharp, strange lights and shadow
The eclipse will occur on Saturday, October 14th and will provide 89% coverage of the sun. The first contact should occur around 10:22am and end at 1:30pm.
It is not safe to look directly at the solar eclipse. The UV rays can be very damaging to your eyes. If you plan on being outside during the event you will need eclipse glasses or a different way of safely viewing the eclipse. Some ideas and tips can be found here: https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety
A total solar eclipse will occur on April 8th. The district has eclipse glasses provided by the Mayborn museum to use while at school that day.
