The Collaborative Connection
Cultivating People, Practice & Possibilities
Join fellow librarians, STEM educators, and gifted educators for The Collaborative Connection, a three-session Professional Learning Group designed to bring educators together to share, learn, create, and grow. There are two opportunities to join our PLG.
Throughout the year, weβll focus on cultivating people by building meaningful professional connections, cultivating practice by exploring engaging instructional strategies, resources, and technology tools, and cultivating possibilities by turning new ideas into meaningful learning experiences for students. While this is primarily for Region 2, we welcome any librarian, STEM or gifted teacher to join our PLG!
Expect plenty of collaboration, hands-on learning, idea sharing, and time to create resources you can take back and use right away. Come ready to connect with others, strengthen your practice, and discover new possibilities for your students!

Librarian Spotlight: Kathleen Sosebee
Congratulations to Kathleen Sosebee, librarian at Oneonta Middle School, on being selected for the 2026 Library of Congress Summer Teacher Institute in Washington, D.C. Kathleen was chosen from nearly 200 applicants nationwide to participate in this prestigious professional learning opportunity.
During the three-day institute, Kathleen collaborated with educators from across the country while exploring strategies for teaching with primary sources from the Library of Congress.
This year, she plans to use her learning with sixth-grade students through lessons focused on analyzing and evaluating primary sources. "The in-depth study of primary and secondary sources gave me the knowledge to create lessons and activities to instruct our students in analyzing and evaluating sources," Kathleen shared.
Interested in learning more? Kathleen recommends the LOC Teacher Blog as a great source of ideas and resources. You can email Kathleen at ksosebee@ocsredskins.com.
Holidays, Standards, and Great Books
Check out Perma-Bound's correlation to the "Using Children's Literature in Social Studies" list supporting the Alabama Course of Study: Social Studies Standards. The suggested book list provides picture books that connect to the new standards being implemented this year as well as holiday-themed titles complementing the standards.
Library + Band = Learning Adventure!
Looking for a creative way to connect library skills with another content area? Collette Fikes recently developed a fun and engaging 7thGrade Band and Library Scavenger Hunt that combines music education with information literacy. Students work in teams to navigate the library, explore the catalog, locate resources, investigate instrument families, practice Dewey Decimal skills, and discover connections between music and other subjects. The activity encourages collaboration, critical thinking, and hands-on research while helping students become more confident library users. Kudos to Ms. Fikes for creating an innovative lesson that showcases the power of collaboration between librarians and classroom educators!
Join the Conversation!
Looking for fresh ideas, practical solutions, and a supportive network of fellow librarians? Check out the new Genrefication Discussions tab in our Schoology Group!
Many libraries report increased student browsing and circulation after reorganizing collections by genre. To help support the conversation, Cindy Mitchell from Prattville High School has generously shared several of her genrefication resources. Her files have been added to the discussion and provide practical examples for librarians considering or implementing genrefication in their own libraries.
Visit the Discussions tab to ask questions, share resources, and connect with librarians across Alabama. Our collective knowledge is one of the greatest resources we have!
Not a member of our Schoology Group yet? Email susanne.estes@alsde.edu for the access code and join the conversation.

The Dot and the Line: A Romance In Lower Mathematics
By Norton Juster
This is the story of a sensible straight line that finds himself hopelessly in love with a beautiful frivolous dot. The dot, though perfect in every way, is wholly unimpressed and only has eyes for a wild and unkempt squiggle. All of the line's romantic dreams were in vain β that is, until he discovered . . . angles! Now, with newfound self-expression, he can be anything he wants to be--a square, a triangle, a parallelogram. . . . And that's just the beginning! The line figures out how to create mathematical beauty in the form of hexagons, octagons, tetragrams, and other complex shapes and how to carefully control ellipses. Suddenly, he's gone from conventional, repressed, and stifled to dazzling, enigmatic, and compelling, and the squiggle doesn't stand a chance.
