Parent Mentor Program ๐
Covington Elementary is excited to share that we were chosen by Arab American Family Services (AAFS) to start a Parent Mentor Program. Parent/Guardians can work in a classroom for two hours a day with a paid stipend at the end of each semester of $1,500.00. 100 hours must be completed to receive the stipend. Training and support are provided by AAFS. Arab American heritage is not a requirement for participation. The program is open to all families who are interested in the opportunity.
If you are interested in applying, please email Amber Kenis, Associate Principal at akenis@d123.org. She will give your name to AAFS for a possible screening/interview. Training can begin as early as next-week with the work hours in the classroom beginning at the beginning of October.
๐ฒStudent Usage of Electronic Devicesโ
Smart watches have become increasingly popular, and we are noticing that they are slowly becoming a distraction in our learning environment. We are asking families to have a quick conversation with their child about the appropriate use of smart watches and other electronic devices during the school day.
Students should not be texting, messaging, calling, checking notifications, or using apps on their smart watch during school hours. Our goal is to keep students focused on learning, interacting with their classmates, and being present in the classroom.
As a reminder, the D123 Family Handbook states:
Behavior: Misuse of cell phones and all other electronic devices
Students are not permitted to use cell phones/electronic devices during the school day unless it is being expressly permitted by school personnel for educational purposes. Cell phones/electronic devices must be turned off and put away during the school day. The district shall not be responsible for lost or stolen electronic devices.
Please review the D123 Family Handbook, page 47, for the full policy and talk with your child about expectations for smart watches and electronic devices at school.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep our classrooms focused, connected, and ready for learning! ๐๐
