GWC EAGLES' NEST
Hello Carver Families!
As you know, February is a time to celebrate Black History Month!
As we celebrate Black History Month, we proudly honor the legacy of George Washington Carver, the visionary scientist, educator and humanitarian for whom our school is named. Born into slavery, Dr. Carver used education, perseverance and innovation to transform agriculture and improve the lives of countless families, particularly in rural communities. He believed deeply in the power of education, service and using one’s gifts to uplift others; values that continue to guide our work at George Washington Carver Elementary School. His life reminds us that curiosity, kindness and determination can create lasting change and we are proud to carry his name and legacy forward as we nurture the potential in every child.
National School Counseling week
This week, we proudly celebrate National School Counselor Week and recognize the incredible impact our school counselor, Ms Nennah Byle, has on our students, families and staff. Her compassion, guidance and unwavering support help students grow academically, socially and emotionally each day. We are grateful for her dedication to ensuring every child feels seen, supported and empowered to succeed. đź’™

The READ Strong St. Mary’s Literacy Initiative is a community-wide effort designed to support children and families through meaningful literacy intervention, enrichment opportunities, and strong community partnerships. Close to half of all 3rd–5th graders in Southern Maryland are not reading at grade level, and we know that lasting change requires a coordinated community response.
We cannot do this work alone. Families, faith communities, civic organizations, educators, volunteers, businesses, and local leaders all play a vital role in helping children thrive — and we need your voice and partnership.
At this meeting, we will:
- Share the vision and goals of the READ Strong St. Mary's Literacy Initiative
- Discuss how the initiative will partner with community organizations to support students and families
- Invite local stakeholders to help shape the effort and strengthen community participation
- Provide a QR code linked to a Google Form, so attendees can sign up to get involved immediately — and share it with others who want to join the work

GWCES BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION POLICY
We respect the many different ways that families like to recognize their child’s birthday. In addition to class recognitions of birthdays, we recognize birthdays during our weekly Community Gathering.
Although we have accepted edible treats in years past, we can no longer accept food items for birthday celebrations. We have an increased number of students with food sensitivities and schools have been encouraged to limit celebrations that involve food during the school day. Additionally, we cannot accept balloons due to latex allergies.
Some families choose to provide a small trinket or non-food based treat to mark their child’s birthday. If you are planning on providing something for the class on your child’s birthday, we ask that you follow these guidelines:
Inform your child’s teacher at least 3 days prior if you intend to provide something for the class on your child’s birthday.
- Trinkets/non-food items will be passed out by the child and his/her teacher near the end of the school day. This helps to minimize distractions to instruction and ensure that items are not lost or broken during the course of the school day.
MY SCHOOL BUCKS
St. Mary’s County Public Schools is transitioning all schools to an online payment system for monetary transactions. The system we are using is MySchoolBucks.
MySchoolBucks is a safe and convenient online payment system that lets families easily manage school-related fees. With MySchoolBucks, you can:
Add money to your child’s cafeteria account for breakfast and lunch purchases.
View account balances and set up low-balance alerts.
Pay for school activities, field trips, or other fees when available.
You can access MySchoolBucks on any computer or by downloading the mobile app, making it easy to stay connected and in control of your child’s school payments anytime, anywhere.
STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE INFORMATION
