An Update from the Principal
Dear MHS Community,
I hope you had a wonderful weekend; all is well and good. Last week, MHS had one of my favorite events- The Sustainable Fashion Show and Clothing Swap. Not only is it an opportunity for students to trade clothes, watch a fun fashion show, and most importantly, learn about how fashion, climate, and pollution all intersect in our lives. Thank you, Rachel Stevens, Tom Sabo, Kianna Bromley, and Earth Group, for your work and time in making this event happen.
This week, MHS has Enrichment on Wednesday, when students sign up to take a mini-short course based on their interests. An opportunity to meet a new student, a teacher they might not have had a class with yet, and complete an activity.
Why are these events so important? Connections and Relationships. One way to increase engagement, attendance, and community is by improving a student's sense of belonging at MHS. On January 29th, during a long TA, students completed a Belonging Circle, led by MHS students asking questions about what it means to "belong" at MHS. On February 12th, the Restorative Practices student leaders presented that data to our faculty. The work on increasing how students feel about attending MHS is one we take seriously, take time, and collect data on to improve our community continuously.
One way we know the work is making an impact is that MHS's Chronic Absenteeism rate has been lowered by 14% since the same time last year, the 22-23 school year. This is a team effort. Teachers, students, caregivers, staff, counselors, custodians, food service, administration, required Solon Blocks, interventions, and co-curricular all impact a student's sense of belonging. While we have more work to do, seeing a positive difference in our work is encouraging.
We ask you to continue ensuring students attend school and classes, speak up when issues arise, and see the value in community efforts.
We appreciate you all for your work.
As we head into break week, stay focused on the positive. Get some rest and enjoy.
Sincerely,
Jason

As some of you know, Russell Clar, an MHS junior, is participating in a semester away right now (left Jan.15). The students left base camp on Monday, and they asked us to share it with students' local schools where relevant.
