Dear Hereford Middle School Community,

It's that time of year when BCPS conducts the annual Climate Survey. We hope that you will take 3 minutes from your busy schedule to provide us with feedback. You will find the link below this message. As always, if you have specific concerns, we encourage you to reach out to the Administration. Soon, students will be scheduled to take the survey during school hours. We look forward to feedback from all of our valued stakeholders.

Have a warm weekend! Go Commanders! Fly Eagles Fly!

Warm Regards,

Mrs. Moore-German, Principal

The annual BCPS Stakeholder Climate Survey opens on January 27! The survey, which is open to all students in Grades 3–12, parents/caregivers, community members, and staff, is a way for BCPS to engage with the school community and receive feedback on issues of school climate and engagement. The survey takes three minutes or less to complete, is anonymous, and is available in multiple languages.

Health Education NEWS Health Education NEWS

As directed by Maryland State Regulations (COMAR 13A.04.18.03), parents/caregivers may choose to have their child opt-out of health education lessons directly related to family life and human sexuality objectives. The lessons are part of the Changes in Me unit in Grades 5-8. With an opt-out option, parents/caregivers who want to have their child participate do not need to send a completed form back.

As of January 27, 2025, BCPS parents and caregivers of students in grades 6-12 will be able to log into the Focus Parent Portal and complete a digital version of the Health Education Family Life and Human Sexuality Content Opt-out form for their student(s). If you prefer, you can complete the form which was sent earlier this week via School Messenger and is attached below.

Below you will find an informational letter regarding the content of each grade level content. Please contact your child's Health and PE teacher with any questions about the Changes in Me unit or any other topics in the health curriculum. The Changes in Me units will roughly be taught during these timeframes.

BCPS students are invited to enter a Black History Month Writing Contest sponsored by the BCPS Offices of English Language Arts and Social Studies.

The contest prompt is the following quotation from African American poet and writer Nikki Giovanni (1943-2024): “Whatever human beings are, we are storytellers. It is our stories that give a light to the future.” In response to that quotation, each student is asked to describe how they have been inspired by the remarkable life of an African American activist, artist, athlete, author, musician, scientist, or other public figure. Students can submit personal essays, letters, speeches, scripts, or poems, and students in primary grades can also submit visual representations with written descriptions.

The deadline for entries is Tuesday, February 11. Winners will be notified by Friday, February 28. Prizes will be provided by The Education Foundation of BCPS, and winning entries will be posted on the BCPS blog. Contest details are available from English and Social Studies teachers.
