A Note From Dr. Neubeck A Note From Dr. Neubeck

I may have mentioned this in past issues but next weekend will be historic for Byron Public Schools as we "officially" open our new Performing Arts Center with three performances of "Cinderella." There will be performances both Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 and on Sunday afternoon at 2:00. I know there are many fun activities planned for the weekend including silent auctions and carriage rides on Saturday. Here is the link to get tickets. Please plan to come and support our actors. They have been working very hard and are ready to perform for you and your family.

I was walking around my house and thinking about what I would write to promote next weekend when it came to me that the story of Cinderella is not much different than what our students may face in schools or in life. First, Cinderella had to deal with tragedy when she lost her father and she is now living with her stepmother and stepsisters. Our staff has been learning about how to work with students who face trauma and, for Cinderella, this could certainly be categorized as trauma. Cinderella then deals with negative attitudes (bullying) by her stepmother and stepsisters and they excluded her. This doesn't happen to that degree to every student in schools; but, feeling like being on the outside or having to deal with not so nice people can happen to many of our students at different times. We try to teach students to be resilient and how to deal with the negative people and events in their life.

But Cinderella's life is not all negative and full of trauma. Thanks to a fairy godmother, some friends and a handsome prince, Cinderella ends up persevering and living happily ever after. We hope that students will find a fairy godmother in our staff members who are there every day to give students help and to give them what they need to be successful. We certainly hope that students are able to make connections with friends and that, in the end, students find the "prince" that will help them be successful in life and live happily ever after. This "prince" may be finding a passion that will lead them to a fulfilling career or it may be the confidence in themselves to take on any challenge they may encounter, etc. In the end, just as Cinderella finds the support she needs and people who care for her, we strive to help students find the same support while showing them that we care. We do this with a terrific and loving staff and a caring Byron Community. See you at the play next weekend.

Go Bears!

Congratulations, Layne Rodemeyer! Congratulations, Layne Rodemeyer!

Congratulations to 7th grader Layne Rodemeyer on qualifying for the nationals contest of the National History Day competition in June at the University of Maryland! Layne has an individual performance on the NEWSIES STRIKE of 1899.

NHD’s core program is its competition in which students in grades 6–12 choose a topic and dive deeply into the past by conducting extensive research in libraries, archives, and museums. Students then present their conclusions and evidence through papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries, or websites, moving through a series of contest levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators.

Updates from the School Board Updates from the School Board

At the April 15th School Board Meeting, the board members:

  • Heard a summary report from the Superintendent of past and upcoming activities in the District.
  • Heard a financial report stating that the district received preliminary renewal rates for health insurance and it was considerably higher than expected due to market value and claimants. The district has also seen an increase in liability insurance with the increase in square footage from construction. District leadership is also preparing for a decrease in enrollment of approximately 20 students. Once more exact numbers are known, the leadership team and Superintendent will be coming to the board with possible financial adjustments/reductions.
  • Heard a report about athletics and activities. The school district presently subsidizes athletics and activities at approximately $600 per participant with the increasing prices of coaches, officials, transportation, etc. The School Board approved a rate increase of $80 per high school sport, $35 per junior high sport and high school activity. They also approved the family cap to increase $200 to $800 per year.
  • Approved a snow removal contract for next year.
  • Discussed their 2024-25 District Operational Goals. They will use the May meetings to finalize.
  • Please check out more board information on the Byron District webpage
