Spotlight
Sunnyside Elementary School Principal Jonathan Heyer reads to kindergartners. These sessions are one of the ways Mr. Heyer and students connected during the first weeks of the school year.
Students' joy in learning energizes Heyer
Leadership for Jonathan Heyer is all about building connections. Sunnyside Elementary School’s new principal started July 1 and welcomed students to the building Sept. 1.
“Whether it’s working alongside our staff, partnering with local organizations, or welcoming families into the process, I’m excited to bring an approachable, collaborative style to Red Wing as we support all students together,” he said.
Jonathan brings over two decades of experience in public education. He spent 17 years as a classroom teacher in grades 2, 4 and 5 before serving five years as a teacher coach and mentor. As Richfield's district director of extended learning, he oversaw all K-12 afterschool and summer programs, managed community partnerships, and led targeted initiatives for students needing extra academic support. Most recently, he served as the assistant principal at a STEM elementary school.

What’s special about working with young students?
They bring so much raw curiosity, wonder, and joy to school every single day. They are naturally eager to learn, excited to see their teachers and friends, and honest about what they think and need. There is nothing quite like watching their eyes light up when they discover something new. Their energy automatically makes my day better. Sunnyside students are the best!
What has stood out about your first month leading Sunnyside Elementary School?
Our incredible team and community.
First, our staff is truly amazing. Their dedication and passion make Sunnyside such a wonderful place to work, learn, and grow every day.
Beyond our school walls, the community of families, parents, staff, and students is simply second to none. I am constantly amazed by how seamlessly our entire community comes together to support and care for our precious Sunnyside kiddos. It has been a fantastic first month, and I couldn't be more proud to be part of this school family.
What excites you most about joining Red Wing Public Schools?
I am excited to join Red Wing Public Schools where I can serve such a close, helpful, and cohesive community. I believe Red Wing offers something truly special.
I love that all students in the community attend the same schools as they grow up. It is a rare and amazing gift that every child gets to share the same educational journey alongside one another, building lifelong connections from the start. Being part of a district that unites an entire town around its youth is incredibly inspiring, and I am honored to serve our students and families here.
What inspired you to be an educator/administrator?
I have always been drawn to education and love working with both students and adults. Early in my career, a close colleague and I started down the administration path together. After they unexpectedly passed away, I made a commitment to continue this work for both of us.
It is a true privilege to serve as a principal and lead such amazing people. Working with youth is especially rewarding because they are our future, and I love knowing that I play a small part in shaping it.
What do you do in your free time?
I love spending as much time outdoors as possible, especially golfing and fishing. Most of all, I enjoy spending time with my family. My two college-age kids and wife are big fans of the outdoors, too, so whenever we can get together, you'll usually find us outside enjoying time together.
School Safety
SECURE! Get inside. Lock outside doors
This week’s Standard Response Protocol (SRP) spotlight is on the SECURE directive. A SECURE action is called when a potential safety issue or hazard exists outside the school building, such as nearby police activity or a dangerous wild animal in the area. During a SECURE event, all staff and students move inside, exterior doors are locked, and outdoor activities like recess are brought indoors. Normal classroom instruction continues as usual inside the building.
Families should not expect communication for a brief or minor external hazard. For extended SECURE protocols, the district may send a notification via text or email. Any such announcement will be made in cooperation with local authorities.
