Dear LMS Families,

Our Outdoor School campers returned on Friday afternoon with huge smiles on their faces! It was a successful week for them, learning outdoors and making new friends. Thank you to all the families who trusted the process and the team to take care of your young people and thank you to all the amazing staff members who made it happen!

Our 8th graders attending Cleveland at Marshall next year had a chance to visit the campus and join their peers from Hosford, Sellwood, and a few smaller groups from other schools. Our LMS students did a great job listening and participating - each student left with a new Cleveland High School t-shirt!

This week we begin our OSAS testing, Tuesday through Thursday. Next week we will resume OSAS Testing on Tuesday for another 3 solid days. Retakes and makeups will take place as we go, and for a week or two . Our testing schedule allows students to focus on their OSAS test first thing in the morning for an extended period of time, so it is important for students to be punctual.

Please help your student show up to school prepared to do their best by getting a good night sleep, staying hydrated, and eating breakfast. Just a reminder that breakfast is offered to every student every morning at school.

Looking ahead there is a furlough day this Friday, so there is no school for students and staff, and the building will be closed.

The school year is quickly coming to a close - I can hardly believe it's almost May. We have a few field trips coming up, SUN Showcase, and 8th Grade Promotion to look forward to. The 8th grade promotion digital invite is below - the details are coming soon.

Please take a moment to complete this Family Survey about how you access your students grades - our district leaders are working to improve systems and your input is critical!

Let's have a great week!

Warmly,

Rosemarie El Youssef

LMS Principal

Rightsizing Engagement Rightsizing Engagement

April 19, 2026

Dear PPS Community,

Our recent Board engagement session marked an important step in shaping how we move forward with right-sizing our schools.

We appreciate everyone who showed up, shared perspective and engaged in a conversation that carries real weight for our students, families, and staff. We also recognize what’s at stake. Our schools anchor neighborhoods, hold history and shape the daily lives of our community. That is exactly why we are approaching this work with intention, clarity, and care.

As a reminder, these discussions are part of the initial Listening and Learning phase of our district’s rightsizing process. No decisions regarding school closures or consolidations have been made. Right now, we are gathering input and feedback from students, families, and staff, which will inform and guide our Board of Education going forward.

This is an ongoing conversation, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has participated so far. In an effort to include as many voices and viewpoints as possible as we plan and prepare, we are adding more sessions to the calendar. We hope you’ll join us.

Upcoming Engagement Sessions:

Monday, April 27 from 6:00 pm -7:30 p.m. at Roosevelt High School

Join via Zoom here: https://pps-net.zoom.us/j/87674445229?pwd=g1bw063XU5Xykar7wGraAyP2dVbaRa.1

Please RSVP here to help us plan for childcare and accommodation needs. (RSVP is much appreciated but not required.)

Thank you again for partnering with us as we work together toward a sustainable future for Portland Public Schools.

Warmly,

The PPS Family and Community Engagement Team

LMS SUN Programs

Hello Lane SUN Families,

Reminder, SUN Spring Session started on Tuesday April 7th. Please check your emails for your children's after school schedules

Here are a few REMINDERS for afterschool programming:

  1. If your child has a SUN class, they are expected to be in the cafeteria right after the bell rings. Any student who leaves the building will not be allowed to attend SUN for that day. UNLESS, there was an excused absence and the parent/guardian notified SUN Staff. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO TO DAIRY QUEEN OR SAWYERS BEFORE SUN STARTS.

  2. Pick up time for SUN is 5:30pm.

  3. Transportation check! Please look at your email for your child’s SUN schedule. In that email, I listed the transportation allowed for your child. PLEASE MAKE SURE STUDENTS AND ADULTS ARE ON THE SAME PAGE ABOUT THEIR TRANSPORTATION. Once students are released from SUN at 5:30pm, they are expected to know what the plan is whether they are walking home, catching the SUN activity BUS, or an adult is picking them up at the front of the school.

  4. Afterschool attendance is important. 3 unexcused absences will result in dropping your child from the class. Please communicate with SUN Staff when your child is home sick or will need to miss SUN for the day.

Thank you all for reading through everything! See you all tomorrow!

Sincerely,

SUN Staff

PLEASE REVIEW WITH YOUR CHILD LMS SUN’s Expectations for Students and Families

Lane SUN is here to provide fun enrichment programs that are inclusive for all, while maintaining the safety for those who are participating. Therefore we have created some Lane SUN Expectations that all Students will need to follow.

  1. Positive and Appropriate Language Use at all times.

  2. Cell Phone Policy Use: Cell Phones are to be used before SUN programs, Breakfast/Lunch, and after SUN programs. Cell phones will remain on Silent during the SUN Program. Families are encouraged to contact the SUN Site Manager Chelsea Kimura 971-917-6285 or the SUN Site Assistant Will Grebner 503-896-1473 for emergencies during the SUN working hours.

  3. Attendance Policy: If you need to leave the program early, you MUST have a parent/guardian permission & check out with a SUN staff before leaving. Students are to sign in and out with specific times of coming in and leaving the Lane SUN Program. This helps us to keep track of students and to let families know when students are leaving the program. If you are concerned about your student’s attendance, please email the Lane SUN site manager Chelsea Kimura (Chelsea.kimura@portlandoregon.gov).

  4. ZERO tolerance for bullying. Respect instructors and peers at all times to help maintain our SUN space to be inclusive and safe for all.

📣 SUPPORT THE LMS STUDENT STORE

At Lane Middle School, our reward system celebrates students who take initiative and live out our core values of being accountable, safe, and kind. When students demonstrate responsibility for their learning and actions, make choices that contribute to a safe and respectful environment, or go out of their way to show kindness to others, they earn “keys” as recognition for their positive impact. These keys serve as both encouragement and a tangible reminder that their actions matter. Students can save and spend their keys at our student store, choosing from a variety of fun and motivating items. This system not only reinforces positive behavior but also builds a school culture where accountability, safety, and kindness are seen, valued, and rewarded every day.

If you would like to help motivate our students and keep the school store stocked, you can find our Amazon Wish List at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/VY1AQGAOY394?type=wishlist
