The LMS Express
November 2, 2024
Hello all,
We had our first "advisory assemblies" of the year this past Wednesday. I expressed my appreciation to our 8th graders for being the leaders of our school and for setting the tone for the fantastic start to the year that we've had. I shared with the student body that nearly every visitor that comes to our school comments on what a nice place it is and how kind and friendly the students are. I challenged the LHS class of 2029 to continue this trend of kindness and friendliness, and to continue to make LMS a place where students feel safe and supported.
We also talked about the LMS Community Tree, which now has 60 (!!) leaves on it. I read aloud some of the Community Tree submissions that earned a leaf on our tree. I also reminded students that not every act of kindness or leadership will be recognized with a leaf, but that each of those acts is valuable in and of itself. We enjoy watching our tree grow, and what that represents.
Be well,
Tom

New LMS Staff
We have had a few staff members join us at LMS since the start of the year. I have been remiss in introducing them through the LMS Express, my apologies for that. Please welcome them if you see them around!
Jane Sayre joins us a social worker intern. This is Jane's first year working in a school. Jane (or "Miss Jane) enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, reading, working out, skiing, and seeing live entertainment such as music, dance and theatre. She loves Amanda Gorman's poetry and was moved by Barbara Kingsolver's book Demon Copperhead. And - Jane's husband is from Italy, she lived in Italy for a long time, and she's always happy to talk about Italy or provide travel tips. Welcome to LMS, Jane!
Faith Douglass has joined us as one of our paraeducators. Miss Douglass has worked with kids and teens since she was a kid, and has volunteered at various places over the years. In her free time, Faith likes to read, write, play sports, and be outside. She's looking forward to getting to know the staff and students at LMS this year, and we're lucky to have her. Welcome to LMS, Faith!

Staff Inservice Day
We had a valuable and meaningful Staff Inservice Day on Friday, November 1st. There were many meetings that brought together groups of people from across the district. At LMS, teachers presented about some of the Learner-Centered Practices that they've been researching and implementing since last Spring. We were also treated to a presentation by the Take Flight group from LHS, which was amazing! We discussed Project-Based Learning, met as Professional Learning Communities, and spent valuable time together chatting and connecting,. These days are a valuable asset to our staff. A big thank you to our teachers for their hard work, and to many folks at the SAU level for coordinating the day.
Spruce Team News
Spruce Team social studies students are exploring their own 'globe theater' activity by creating charade-like tableau scenes in various stages to supply hints with repetitive movement and/or sound effects. Students worked collaboratively with their classmates in small groups to brainstorm and perform vocabulary words that were drawn from an array of cards.
As the audience guessed, there were many laughs to be had and students were excited to see each mini performance and share their visions.

Winter Sports Registration - Closing This Week
Winter sports registrations via Arbiter Sports will close on November 7th. Lebanon Middle school offers basketball, Nordic skiing, wrestling and gymnastics. Click here to register, and stay tuned for information on sports getting started in the next few weeks.
Weather Reminder
As temperatures start to drop, especially in the mornings, a quick reminder - students will be expected to be outdoors prior to the start of school and during recess if the temperature "feels like" 15 degrees or higher. At LMS, we believe that fresh air and sunshine (even when it's chilly) is a valuable part of a positive school day, and we strive to get students at least a small amount of time outside for our students. Please remind students to dress accordingly, and thanks for your help with this.
Math League News
Lebanon Middle School won third place in our division for the team scores! Team scores are the combined total of all the participant scores. We scored 56 points overall! This is our first time placing as a team. Sam Buckwold tied for second place with 23 points in the Junior Division. We had a great group of 5th- 8th graders competing and the team did an excellent job with some very difficult problems this round! Our next meet is in December.

A Note From Cafe Services
We now sell non-caffeinated drinks, juices, bags of chips, homemade cookies and muffins, and a few other snack items. The snacks and chips are $.75-$1.50 and the drinks are $2.25-$3.00.
As a parent of school age children myself, I think it’s important for everyone to know that these items are available and being sold as a la carte items. The student must have cash or money available on their account to purchase these items.
It may be a good idea to speak with your children about these purchases and to be smart about what they buy, as the money on their accounts is your money and may be intended for only breakfast or lunch.
If you do not want your child purchasing a la carte items, you can reach out to me and I can put a block on a la carte purchases.
Please email me if this is the case at rmarsh@sau88.net, and I will add that block to the account. When there is a block on specific items on a student's account, the cashier will not allow those items to be purchased.
If you have any questions about this or any other food service related issues, please let me know.
Thank you,
Ricky Marsh

LMS Debate Team
The LMS Speech and Debate Team competed in a tournament at Oyster River High School on Saturday, October 19th. Competitors debated both sides of a topic pertaining to surveillance infrastructure on the U.S. southern border. Our students held their own competing against high schoolers, since Lebanon is currently the only middle school in the state with a speech and debate team.
The team's next tournament will be Saturday, November 16th in Portsmouth on a new topic pertaining to U.S. defense spending and Taiwan. New students are welcome to join at any time! The team is open to all 7th and 8th graders. Practices are held most Tuesdays after school.

LISTEN Holiday Baskets
The LISTEN Center is now accepting applications for the 2024 Holiday Baskets.
This year, holiday baskets will consist of three (3) winter clothing items and a 50-dollar grocery gift card. The online registration link will be available beginning September 30th.
All applicants will first be added to an interest list in the order that their registrations are received. From this list, households will be matched with sponsors. Completing this application does not guarantee you will receive a Holiday Basket.
LISTEN can only guarantee you will receive a Holiday Basket once you are matched with a sponsor. A LISTEN staff member will notify you once your household is matched with a sponsor.
At that time, you will receive details on how and when to pick up your Holiday Basket. This year, the Holiday Baskets will be distributed early to mid-December.
Click here to apply for a LISTEN Holiday Basket.
If you or someone you know would be interested in sponsoring a Holiday Basket, please click here, or share that link with them. And thank you!
