Shoreham Elementary School
"You Belong Here"
Principal's Update
SES Community,
It is hard to believe that it is the last day in January. We have had very cold temperatures and not a lot of snow this month but that has not stopped our students from enjoying sledding at recess! Students have done a great job at being safe and inclusive .
This month students also learned about an historical icon, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They learned about his dream and why it was so important to keep his dream alive as well as their own.
Lastly, progress reports will be sent home in backpacks today, January 31st, for all students in grades K-5. In the next two weeks, you will also receive a brief call from your child’s teacher to clarify any questions you may have about your child’s progress report. If you have more in-depth questions, the spring conference window opens next month. At that meeting, you can speak to your child’s teacher in-person about their overall school experience and their academic and social emotional growth. If your child is on IEP they will also receive an IEP progress report. If your child is in grade K-3 and their recent screening results indicate a need for further support in reading, your teacher will share that information on their call, and you will also receive a letter that shares our plan for supporting your child.
Please know if you ever have any questions or concerns you are always welcome to call and set up a meeting with your child's teacher or myself.
Best,

Following Our heArt
“First I’m going to choose the most powerful tool in the world...a pencil.”
-Quote from a 5th grade learner
In art classes this year, we have all been practicing to be open minded thinkers in order to communicate our personal voices through visual art processes.
Currently third, fourth and fifth graders are exploring the concept of symmetry, both reflective and radial. We will soon be moving into some three dimensional art processes using clay and other materials. Currently the students are using tools to create mandalas. The process allows them to express themselves while also expanding from the inward out with pattern, shape and color. We have discussed what a pattern is and different places where we can find patterns in art, in music, in math...so many ways!
Kindergarten through second grade have also been exploring symmetry and creating collages with cut paper techniques to create artworks. We have been noticing patterns in nature, such as, weather and snowflakes for inspiration.
There is so much creativity and originality that shines from our kids at Shoreham! They exhibit agency in their choices of tools and materials.
Third grade through 5th grade students have sketch journals that they can choose to use for planning, problem solving and documenting evidence of their thinking.
We have had the opportunity to have art groups on Friday afternoons, where student artists have some extra time in a small group setting to connect and create.
I thank you for the privilege of working with the children at Shoreham Elementary School!
Warmly-
Sarah Flinn
