Message from Nicole Pease, Principal Teacher at DCS
Happy Friday DCS families, while I do believe the delays were good calls, it does make the days a bit wonky. Staff and students worked hard to maintain as much of a regular schedule as possible. Next week will be fun filled with lots of holiday fun! Monday we have our Holiday Shoppe, please be on the lookout for the receipt for your student's shopping. Thursday will bring our Craft Day in the morning. Friday is our candy cane walk, Community Lunch, and whole school Assembly. Whew, we will need our roller skates on and lots of patience to get through all the festivities! We all hope you and your families have a wonderful holiday season filled with family, friends, fun, and relaxation. Have a lovely weekend, Nicole
This week in wellness...
Students participated in a floor hockey unit, learning basic skills and how to use the stick safely. They practiced dribbling, partner passing, shooting on goal, and protecting their puck. We finished by playing scooter hockey. We also played a few winter games including elf express, snow forts, elf dice fitness, snowmobile rides (scooters), decorating the cookie, gingerbread houses, filling Santa's bag, and snowball target throw. We had fun getting our heart rate pumping, playing with friends, and working together.
Thank you for your support and encouraging healthy choices.
Mrs. Parker
Fun in Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grades
From Kristen Garland:
The terrific third graders continue to have fun learning and growing as students and human beings.
For Social/Emotional Learning, we have a game portion in our Morning Meetings. Children participate in a “Group Activity—The whole class does a short, inclusive activity together, reinforcing learning and building class cohesion through active participation.”- Responsive Classroom. They develop game-playing skills such as taking turns, being a good sport, and playing a game for fun. During Language Arts, the children continued with our class book, My Father’s Dragon. They pre-learn essential vocabulary and read the story together. We will work on comprehension and the different story elements. For word work, the students reviewed different affixes and how they change the root work. For writing, we finished up our Informative Writing about the Historical Society and started an assessment on Informative Writing to wrap up our unit. We kicked off our study of birds with two visits from the Harris Center. We learned what birds in this area eat during the winter and used our playground to find possible food, shelter, and water for birds. The children enjoyed learning to use field guides to identify birds and started collecting data on birds that may visit our bird feeder. We are excited to start observing our feathered friends visiting our birdfeeder outside our window!
4th/5th Grade Language Arts -
The students continue reading their literature books, working on vocabulary, fluency, decoding, comprehension, and retelling. For our extensive Informative Writing Unit, they are finishing up their writing on their unique places to visit in Seoul, South Korea, with the MysteryWriting team. Please enjoy this project with your child when it is sent home. We have started our end-of-the-unit assessment on Informative Writing. They also work on the morphology of words, discovering how adding different affixes changes the meaning of the words. Please remember to have your child read daily during the holidays. Their Reading homework is due on Monday, January 6th, when we return to school!
From Deb Quinn:
December has been flying by!
In math, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders have been wrapping up units and working on memorizing math facts.
4th and 5th graders have continued to care for our turtles. They have grown a lot and the students have taken the responsibility seriously. We have done research about the painted turtles and created art work to illustrate thier research.
In Social Studies, we have been learning about Christmas cultures from around the world. It has been fun to compare and contrast the traditions. We have been able to compare our studies to the lessons we took part of at the Mariposa.
Busy in First and Second
The excitement is HIGH in grades 1 and 2! Come check out the adorable elves hanging in our hallway. The students had to decide if they were a Christmas elf, would they be kind or sneaky, and what they would do. They are a creative bunch! I would love a few of the kind elves to come to my house--they said they'd clean my house and wash my dogs! The second graders are doing an excellent job on their opinion writing, and most of them chose Christmas as their favorite holiday. They have to write a paragraph with a topic sentence, three supporting details with transition words, and an ending. The students caught on quickly and did a beautiful job. We are working on measurement, specifically standard units of measurement in math. We finished reading The Grinch by Dr. Seuss and a picture book version of The Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. We compared and contrasted Grinch and Scrooge using a Venn diagram. We are also studying how different countries celebrate the holidays. It was great to go to the Mariposa Museum and hear similar things to what we are studying in class! While the energy is high, the students have continued to work hard on all these exciting activities!
Smiling in Kindergarten
In kindergarten we’ve been reading many different adaptations of The Gingerbread Man story and comparing and contrasting characters, setting, and story endings. Ask your child which version is their favorite!
In math, kindergarteners are learning about shapes and their attributes. They’re practicing using positional words: above, below, next to, beside, as well as longer and shorter.
With the cold weather upon us, it’s a good time to learn about what adaptations help animals survive the winter. Do they migrate? Camouflage? Hibernate? Get ready?
Wishing you all peace and joy this holiday season!

Message from the School Nurse
A message from Pam Murphy, RN DCS School Nurse
Recently, there have been numerous student requests for cough drops. As cough drops are considered medication, I am asking for your help in following the ConVal policy on medication administration at the elementary level. To do this, any medication, including cough drops, must be delivered to the school by a parent/guardian or their designated responsible adult in the original container. A written permission form is also required which is available at DCS.
Please reach out to me at pmurphy@conval.edu if you have any questions.
