Happy Halloween Week MES Sea Lion Families,

I have so many fun things to share with you all!

Here's to a fun and spooky week ahead! We have two schoolwide events happening this week! The first one is our TRUNK OR TREAT event, happening today from 5-6pm! Families decorate their car trunks and hand out candy and treats to children as they walk from car to car in their costumes. It’s a fun way to celebrate Halloween and enjoy time together as a school community! If you’re decorating on-site, please arrive by 4:30 PM to set up. Just coming to enjoy the festivities? No RSVP needed! All MES students and their families are welcome.

The second event takes place on Friday, October 30th! We will not be having a typical assembly, and instead will start the day with our Halloween Parade! Students sit with their classes in a large square and we take the time to have students parade by class or grade level! Parents and other students cheer them on and we all enjoy the event. Students are able to wear their costume to school and can wear it all day, with some guidelines (see below).

  1. Masks may be worn for the parade ONLY. During recess, lunch, and even before school, store them in a backpack or elsewhere.
  2. Costumes may not have weapons of any sort.
  3. Inflatable costumes are fine for the parade, but ones that cover the head may not be worn for recess. These cannot be worn in the classroom.
  4. If the costume requires different footwear, please send your child with shoes that they can change into for the day so that they can run and play.

GARDENING started this week with all of our students! We will be having gardening approximately every other week and the students were LOVING it! Ask them about it! This is all funded through the Santa Monica Mountains Fund, and we are excited about having the support here at MES! Photos will be coming in the weeks ahead!

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES are coming NEXT week! Please make sure that you've communicated with your child's teacher and have one set up! We have a FULL day of school on Monday, Nov. 2nd. Students do not have school on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd. We then have 12:45 dismissals for ALL students on Wed-Fri, Nov. 4-6th. Please make a note of this.

I know I mention this every week, but this is an area of growth for many Sea Lion families. It's important that we not only get students to school, but get them to their classroom line up spots on time. Sometimes it is just a difference of 5 extra minutes in the morning! PLEASE work together so that your student can be to their line (not just the gate) by the time the bell rings! Know that between 8-8:05 there are MINIMAL cars in the line - even with our new procedure! Our playgrounds open at 8 so we've got supervision for your students!

Please also continue to do the following when reporting absences!

  1. Email us at mesattendance@smmusd.org
  2. Make sure to let us know the reason for your child's absence when you communicate!
  3. Let the teacher know as well.

This week, we had field trips happening with students in grades 1-3! First graders from Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Tate's class went to Underwood Farms, and all of our 1st-3rd graders also saw a performance at Pepperdine. Last week, we also had students recognized for doing amazing things, and had a special skit on being an UPSTANDER! Thank you to Alexis Jordan, our Wellness Director for coordinating, along with Josh and Emily - our amazing parents who added to the fun!

We're always looking for amazing photos of students and families! f you ever have photos that you'd like to contribute, please send them to Ms. Wennes at swennes@smmusd.org!

Data Confirmation - MUST DO! Data Confirmation - MUST DO!

Annual Parent Data Confirmation or Revision - Aeries Parent Portal

The Data Confirmation process is easy. This includes items like Emergency Cards, Parent Handbooks and Policies and Authorizations. We have many important documents and plenty of information for your family within the online registration site, accessed via your Aeries Parent Portal.

There are a couple new things this year - the Consent for School-Based Wellness Services and the Consent for Billing Health Insurance.

  1. SMMUSD is participating in California's Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI), which allows school districts to seek reimbursement from Medi-Cal and commercial health insurance for eligible school-based wellness services. These reimbursements help offset the District's investment in counseling, mental health, nursing, and other student wellness programs.

  2. Families will also be asked to provide their child's health insurance information as part of the annual records update. Collecting this information does not authorize SMMUSD to bill insurance. Insurance will only be billed if a parent provides separate authorization, which is completely voluntary.

ACTION NEEDED: Malibu Elementary’s annual registration process is completed in the Aeries Parent Portal. You must complete the complete data confirmation for each student - even if you JUST finished registration!

  1. Log in to your Aeries Parent Portal: https://santamonicamalibu.aeries.net/
  2. Be sure to read, review, and discuss all the materials with your student.
  3. Very Important: We need to gather information from you for emergency contacts. Please add at least two non-parents. While there are many boxes to fill, at minimum include name, relationship, and phone number.
  4. We also need to gather information from you for health documents.

Note: You may decide to print some of the documents for future reference. For a tutorial on how to complete this process, please click here English

We are running a bit low with our extra clothes in the health office. We could use clothes of all sizes (including shoes) to resupply our allotment here in the nurses office. This could also include undergarments and socks.

Thank you so much parents! We appreciate it!

SQUARE ONE ART FUNDRAISER - We are again doing an amazing fundraiser through Square One! Check your child's backpack for a custom flyer that went home last week (and see the sample flyer below). This helps to provide extra supplies that we use during art time with Ms. Nicole! You are ALWAYS able to purchase items through Square One, but the fundraiser part ends on November 13th! Thank you for helping and supporting our program! Any questions? Reach out to Nicole at nfisher@smmusd.org!

MES PTA GIVING WAVE EXTENDED TO 10/23 🌊

We've raised over $150K toward our $500K annual goal. WAY TO GO! Let's make a big push to reach 100% participation in every grade!

The next $25K donated will be matched dollar for dollar.

$5, $50, $500 or $5,000 - Every Donation Counts.

Here is what it takes to fund possibility for every child at MES:

  • $95/month per student funds our Teacher’s Aides.
  • $150/month per student funds all of our school programs.

These numbers put the power of our collective giving into perspective. There is no single right amount, but working together makes a huge difference. If you’ve already donated, thank you for being part of the wave. If you haven’t had a chance yet, there’s still time to make an impact before the campaign closes! Let’s finish strong, Sea Lions!

Please donate for your grade! It's sooooooo close!

Student Birthday Celebrations

Such observances must be coordinated with the classroom teacher and should occur after lunch or at the end of the day. Food may be distributed at school. Healthier options should be encouraged. Cakes or very sweet treats (Sugar-based foods) are NOT allowed. All-natural popsicles are the ONLY choice for birthday celebrations. Our SMMUSD Food and Nutrition Services Wellness Policy calls for staff to limit student consumption of sugar at school. No nuts, if there is a peanut allergy in the classroom. Party favors are ok to distribute. Balloons should not be brought to campus as part of a birthday celebration. Birthday invitations for parties away from school may not be distributed unless every student in the class is invited.

Candy/sheet cakes/cupcakes/cookies at school: Staff, students, and parents may not distribute these at school.
