The Power of Gratitude at OHS
As November begins, Owensboro High School is turning our focus toward one of the most powerful ways to strengthen happiness, relationships, and our sense of belonging: gratitude! This month, we invite our entire Red Devil family to celebrate A Month of Gratitude by recognizing the people, opportunities, and everyday moments that make life meaningful.
Research shows that gratitude is more than good manners. It's good for us! Studies highlighted by Harvard Medical School and UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center suggest that practicing gratitude can improve happiness and optimism, reduce stress, strengthen relationships, support better sleep, and build resilience. Even small acts of appreciation can make a meaningful difference in our well-being and the lives of others.
Throughout November, OHS students will study the benefits of gratitude, learn various gratitude practices, engage in daily journaling during Advisory, and use our November Gratitude Calendar to guide reflection and encourage intentional moments of thankfulness. We invite our entire Red Devil family to join us by using the calendar to practice gratitude each day. Together, we can discover that gratitude isn't just something we express during Thanksgiving. It's a habit worth practicing all year long!
And when we pause to reflect on all we have to be thankful for, it's impossible not to recognize the incredible people who make Owensboro High School such a special place. We are especially grateful for:
Our Students: For your energy, creativity, kindness, leadership, and the unique talents that make OHS extraordinary.
Our Teachers and Staff: For your dedication, compassion, countless sacrifices, and unwavering commitment to helping every Red Devil thrive.
Our Families: For your trust, encouragement, partnership, and continued support of our students and school.
Our Community: For investing your time, resources, and hearts into creating meaningful opportunities for our Red Devils and supporting Owensboro High School.
Gratitude grows when we share it. This November, we challenge everyone to say thank you more often, recognize the good in others, celebrate small moments, and remind someone how much they matter.
OHS Veterans Day Celebration: Honoring Those Who Served
On Wednesday, November 11, Owensboro High School will proudly honor the brave men and women who have served our nation with a special Veterans Day Celebration. This meaningful tradition provides an opportunity for our Red Devil family to express gratitude, recognize sacrifice, and celebrate those who have dedicated themselves to protecting our freedoms.
We invite all veterans and currently serving military personnel to join us for a special reception beginning at 2:00 pm, followed by a school-wide Veterans Day Celebration at 2:45 pm, led by the Owensboro High School Army JROTC Program.
All OHS students and staff are encouraged to invite family members and friends who have served or are currently serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Space Force to be our honored guests.
Please RSVP by Friday, November 6, to help us prepare for this special occasion.
At OHS, we believe that honoring those who serve is more than a tradition. It is an opportunity to teach gratitude, respect, and the true meaning of service and sacrifice.
To all who have worn the uniform and those who continue to serve, we thank you. It would be our privilege to celebrate you on Wednesday, November 11 at 2:00pm.
More Than Parent-Teacher Conferences - Thursday, November 12
We invite all OHS families to join us for Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, November 12, from 4:00–7:00pm! This is a great opportunity to connect with your student's teachers, school counselors, College and Career Planner, and administrators to discuss academic progress, celebrate successes, and plan for continued growth.
Families should park in the North Gym/Student Parking Lot and enter through the Car Rider Entrance. Once inside, families may visit their student's classrooms at their convenience. No appointments are necessary!
In addition to conferences, we have several special opportunities planned throughout the evening that you won't want to miss!

Operation Santa: Battle of the Classes
It's time for our Red Devils to show their holiday spirit and a little friendly competition! This year's Operation Santa will be led by our OHS Red Devil Reps, and we're turning up the excitement with an all-out Battle of the Classes!
OHS is proud to continue our annual partnership with the Owensboro Police Department to help provide complete holiday meals for 350 families across our community. Each year, OPD assembles holiday meal boxes, and our Red Devils provide the canned vegetables needed to make those meals complete.
Our goal: Collect 1,400 cans of corn and green beans!
Seniors & Sophomores: 700 cans of corn
Juniors & Freshmen: 700 cans of green beans
From Monday, November 23, through Friday, December 11, students can place their donations under their grade-level Christmas tree in the OHS front lobby. Every can counts toward your class total!
And what's a little holiday giving without some friendly competition? The grade level collecting the MOST cans will earn ultimate bragging rights AND a special treat during Finals Week!
While only one class will claim victory, the real winners are the 350 Owensboro families who will experience the kindness and generosity of our Red Devils.
Let's fill those trees, exceed our goal, and show Owensboro what happens when the Red Devils come together for a purpose!
