A peak into Mrs. Nattini's class!

What an incredible year it has been in our classroom! As we head into the final stretch, our students have been reflecting on all of the amazing things they have learned and accomplished. One of our most exciting projects has been our "Why I'm a Cool Kid" ice pop writing activity, where each student created their own ice pop showcasing their biggest achievements and proudest moments from this school year. From mastering new skills to overcoming challenges, our students had so much to celebrate — and their work truly shows how far they have come.

In preparation for the 5th grade Historical Scavenger Hunt, our class has been diving into the rich history of Hoboken, NJ — learning about the people, places, and stories that make our city so special. We even tie-dyed our own shirts to wear on the big day, bringing some extra fun and school spirit to the event! We have also spent time reviewing all of the important math skills we worked so hard to build this year — including fractions, rounding, addition and subtraction with regrouping, multiplication and division, and figuring out which operation to use when solving word problems. Our students have grown so much as mathematicians, readers, writers, and thinkers, and we could not be more proud.

Using the News2You curriculum, our class has also been staying connected to the world around us through current events in world news, sports, and entertainment. A special highlight this marking period has been our focus on the upcoming FIFA World Cup — and the excitement hit close to home when we learned that games will be played right in our backyard at MetLife Stadium! Students explored articles about world news, sports and entertainment and have been practicing answering who, what, when, where, and why questions about what they read. It has been a wonderful way to build reading comprehension skills while connecting our learning to real-world events that are relevant and exciting. Thank you to our families for your endless support — it truly takes a village, and this class is proof of that!

This year at Wallace Elementary was one filled with such joy and wonder in our art room. The children made tremendous progress in their drawing skills and were eagerly practicing their art vocabulary words in their responses. New mediums and materials such as watercolors, acrylic paints and turning paper into fantastically whimsical paper sculptures were introduced to explore. As we end this year on a high note, we want to acknowledge how all the students are becoming creative problem solvers while trying out new ways of creating art.

Kindergarten and First grade worked with many new tools, principally with rulers. They learned how to measure their paper into one inch rows, to then cut the strips and turn them into paper sculptures. They also used rulers to create abstract line designs on paper. And finally, they had made mini air dry clay snails and wonderful watercolors. Second through fifth grade also used watercolors and learned about Georgia O’Keefe’s iconic abstract botanicals. By the end of the year the students were in full bloom working in collaboration with one another to close out the year with a large scale paper sculpture.

End of Year Reflections: A Year of Growth and Gratitude

We cannot believe we have reached the end of another school year already—time truly flies! The guidance department is incredibly proud of the tremendous growth our students have demonstrated throughout this year. From developing self-awareness to building stronger relationships with their peers, we have witnessed remarkable progress in our students' social and emotional development. We encourage all parents to continue supporting this important work by reinforcing the Zones of Regulation and social emotional learning strategies throughout the summer months. When students engage in these practices during the break, they maintain the skills they've worked so hard to build and return to school with stronger emotional foundations. We are deeply grateful for the partnership and support our families have shown our department this year—your encouragement and reinforcement of our lessons at home have made all the difference. As we head into summer, we hope students will continue to practice mindfulness, emotional awareness, and healthy coping strategies in their daily lives. We look forward to welcoming our students back in the fall, refreshed and ready to continue their meaningful journeys with social emotional learning. We are confident that the emotional growth our students have achieved this year will directly support their academic success and educational goals moving forward. Thank you again for believing in our mission and for being such wonderful partners in our students' growth!

Best regards,

The Wallace Guidance Team

Our biggest activity in Quarter 4 in ESL was participating in Wallace’s annual International Block Party! This year, the multilingual students in Ms. Witrock’s class spent time learning about culture and its many components, such as language, clothing, holidays, and cuisine. Students then chose a specific topic to research about their home country. Favorite topics included food and holidays from students’ home countries! Next, students created mind maps that included fun facts and examples of their chosen aspect of culture from their home country. All students worked so hard on their posters, which were then displayed in the Gym at the International Block Party for the whole Wallace community to enjoy and learn from. Great job, students!

Thank you to all the parents, families, and students in the English Language Learners program here at Wallace! It is a pleasure to work with students who are so engaged and eager to learn and grow! See you in September!
