AVID Weekly Reader - African American men and women make notable advances in technology AVID Weekly Reader - African American men and women make notable advances in technology

Our students read this article in AVID and used their Thinking Core resources that they regularly use in their English Language Arts' classes to assist them as they wrote summaries. We want our students to apply the knowledge that they learn in every space.

The Benefits of Using a Planner - Parent's Edition

Each of our Nichols' scholars received a planner to use this school year. Recently, I shared this resource of ways that educators can support their students' planner usage. Please look at this document to see ways that you as parents can support your child as they develop executive functioning skills to maximize their academic success.

One of the suggestions is: Support struggling students by having their parents or another adult view the planner. Having parents or another adult sign the student’s planner is a great way to create home accountability for assignments. The planner can be a great tool for communicating with parents to make sure that they are aware of assignments and upcoming deadlines.

Check your child's planner to ensure that they are writing their assignments. Check for upcoming assignments and/or assessments. This is another level of accountability to help your child as they are learning to manage having multiple teachers and classes. Please email your child's teachers or Mrs. Nelson, the 6th grade counselor, if you have any questions or need clarifications.

Please have your child put the upcoming events below in their planners!

Guardian's Guide: Guardian's Guide:

Thank you so much for all of the support you provide your AVID scholar with at home.

Here is how you can support your AVID scholar at home:

  1. Check your child's class notes and ask them to use their notes to explain what they are learning in class.
  2. Inquire with your child about their "points of confusion" in their various classes.
  3. Encourage your child to advocate for themselves by emailing their teacher or speaking with their teacher about their AVID tutorial question.

Please reach out to the counselor Mrs. Nelson (nelsont@district65.net) or Ms. Lopez (lopezv@district65.net) if you have any questions or concerns.
