A message from the Nurse
Kindergarten
We found a SAFE new way
to spread Heart Day Cheer
without the tiny cards
for Valentine’s Day this year.
The students in Mrs. Neff's class were given an opportunity to create a Big Valentine for their friends. See how gorgeous these beautiful paper confections showered down upon us this snowy month? ❄️The Symmetrical Snowflakes were created in the classroom and in Art class with Ms. Hauser! ❄️
Mrs. Geers's class had love in the air this year. Each kindergarten student brought in one BIG Valentine to share with the entire class.
Each one was an original design, and every student shared their Valentine idea with the class.
Check out the 3-D solid shapes students made during math! Did you notice we are wearing our Pajamas? We earned $1000 points for being Empowered Eagles and dressed in our soft comfy sleepers. 😴 💤
First Grade
Mrs. Wendling's first grade were engaged in the virtual field trip presented by Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. They watched a presentation over Zoom and then got to ask one of the volunteers questions about the animals they rescue. The students learned that wild animals should never be kept as pets!
On Wednesday 2/10 Mrs. Fedele's class took a virtual field trip with the Intrepid Museum of NYC. Our presenter showed us a model of the Intrepid Ship that was built with 250,000 Legos. We also learned that this ship is 3 football fields long. We learned about how the different planes and capsules all helped people get to space and what life was like on the journey.
Mrs. Curtin's class had a fun and energetic movement break using Go Noodle. They also got to learn about the heart for Valentine's Day!
Second Grade
Officer Zaffino was a special guest speaker in our 2nd grade classes. He shared his background and experiences as a special Service worker in our community.
2nd graders are learning how to write "How To " paragraphs. We wrote about "How to Make Slime" and then had fun making our own
Kindness is so sweet! Second graders discussed many ways to be kind this week. We are excited to share our kindness doughnuts with our families on Valentine’s Day!
Third Grade
Mrs. Tryon’s class read the book Kindness is Cooler, Mrs. Ruler and is participating in a Kindness Challenge throughout the month of February. When students are caught doing a random act of kindness, their parents write their act on a heart and send it in to school. The heart gets added to that student’s “Heart Chart.” Their goal is to complete 10 acts of kindness before the end of the month. The students also used their multiplication skills to figure out that if each student in the class meets their goal, that is 230 random acts of kindness in one month!
Ms. Werner's class celebrated Kindness Day virtually! Students wrote compliments to their classmates through Google Slides. Students focused on positive character traits when writing compliments.
The Third Graders are about to embark upon this year's 'Wax Museum Activities!'
Students will utilize their newly honed reading/writing skills to research, create, and present their favorite 'Famous Person' to teachers and classmates alike...It never fails to impress, and this year should be no different!
Fourth Grade
The fourth grade students celebrated KINDNESS DAY by graphing, grouping, estimating and measuring with candy hearts ❤️
Gym Class
Tawanka students heat it up outside even when the temperature is frigid. These 1st graders are participating in a fitness circuit during physical education class.
Mr. Blaydon's class practices their fine motor skills in Gym with Mr. Wright.

My name is Stephen Barberides, and I am currently working as a building substitute here at Tawanka! I first came to Tawanka Elementary in the Fall of 2019 after working as a police officer in the City of Harrisburg. Working at Tawanka has been an incredible experience, allowing me to realize that I want to pursue a career in teaching. I am currently earning my Master of Arts in Elementary Education and hope to be certified next spring. I would like to continue working in Neshaminy School District after completing my certification!
Safety of all students and staff is a top priority at Tawanka, and so we have strict safety procedures in place. A reminder of the following:
Early Dismissals: Please notify the teacher if your child will be picked up early. If being picked up by someone other than a parent/guardian, please specify who will be picking up your child. Students will only be released to individuals listed on the emergency card, but the office must be notified prior to pick-up. Students must be signed out in the main office. Again, driver's license or state issued ID is required to pick up a student.
A zoom link will be sent out via email prior to the meeting.
