Message from Nicole Pease, Principal Teacher at DCS Message from Nicole Pease, Principal Teacher at DCS

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you had a lovely week. I am so thankful for the support in our town shown by the passing of the District budget!

While it was a short week with students, it was a busy 3 day week! We had Ashuelot Concerts come for a performance yesterday which students enjoyed! The performers do such a lovely job connecting history to the music.

We have also been busy preparing for the One School One Book Assembly today. Students were excited when bagpiper, Dave Myer kicked off the Assembly to hint to the setting of Scotland. Staff shared a skit, as well as the reveal of the "water horse" mascot created by Heather Fletcher's husband. The book is entitled "Water Horse" and a copy was sent home to each family today. We will share links to the recordings of each chapter on Monday and indeed there will be another town wide scavenger hunt (thanks to Heather Fletcher and Deb Lang)! While it was a tremendous amount of work and planning the excitement the students displayed made it all worth it! Have a wonderful weekend, Nicole

Kindergarten learned about the Percussion family. They loved playing the Djembe drums and hearing the history behind it! 1st and 2nd grade studied musical contour - ask your child to sing the Elevator song. 3rd graders got their recorders and learned the basics - Hot Cross Buns was a favorite. 4th and 5th graders continued their study of recorder, including reading music on the staff and drawing treble clefs. We spent time practicing the song "Truly Brave" for the all district Choral Concert (3/19 6:30pm at CVHS). Any DCS 4th and 5th graders are invited to attend and sing!

Mrs. Quinn Mrs. Quinn

The 4th & 5th graders had a lot going on as we got back from vacation. On Tuesday we had a virtual field trip to the NH Turtle Rescue who shared with us their mission to help injured turtles of all species be cared for until they could be returned to the wild. When this can not happen, they provide for them the best they can.

On Friday, we went to the NH State house and toured the rooms where our state representatives do their work. We talked about the progression of a bill from proposal to either passing or being dismissed. I was very thankful for how well our students behaved and answered questions. Our tour guide tried hard to find state symbols that they could not name and he found only one.

Third Grade Math - Our focus is on the relationship between multiplication & division, developing greater understanding of place value, the properties of order of operation and multi-step story problems.

Fourth Grade Math - We are starting Unit 4 which will focus on reading and writing numbers with decimal notations and work with numbers from multi-digits up to 1,000,000.

Fifth Grade Math - This class continues to work with fractions with several operations. The concept of place values including tenths, hundredths, thousandths and understanding exponents are being explored to build greater flexibility with numbers.

Our terrific third-graders have been super busy with our bird unit. We started with two visits from the Harris Center. The class discussed their winter bird observations and spring migration. Also, on the first visit, the focus was on bird adaptations (beaks and feet). The students rotated through stations to observe bird mounts, recording and discussing what they learned. The next day, they learned about what birds do in the spring. The activities involved the bird's lifecycle and nesting.

On Tuesday the 18th, Jeanne Connelly will help us create individual bird books. To prepare, the children all chose a local bird of winter and researched specific facts about it in our Beginner Bird Guide book. The children each drew their bird. Then, they will be copied, and each child will have a collection of the class’s birds to color and then place in the books with Jeanne.

As a class, we are finishing reading our literature book, Because of Winn Dixie. This book has offered great discussions on friendship, loss, acceptance, and the power of storytelling. The children continued working on opinion writing with Mystery Writing. Another highlight from the week was restarting reading buddies with the kindergarten!

4th/5th English Language Arts -

The students started our new literature book. We will be reading this book together as a group, focusing on vocabulary, comprehension, and the deep meaning of the story. The opinion writing project is in full swing. The students are looking at the importance of facts and examples to persuade the reader to their point of view. For word work, we are looking at and for idioms. What do the words mean, and how do they enhance the text for the reader? We have focused on the silent letters in reading/spelling and the suffixes - tion and -sion.

A gentle reminder: It is essential for your child’s learning to complete their spelling homework weekly and read every evening.

First and Second Graders loved learning all about Dr. Seuss during his birthday week. We read several of his stories and especially enjoyed comparing and contrasting Horton Hears a Who with Horton Hatches the Egg, a new story to many. Making oobleck after reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck, made the story come alive. Did you know that Dr. Seuss used only 50 different words when writing Green Eggs and Ham? He won a $50 bet with his publisher, but more than that, this book has become one of his most beloved books. The students loved ending the week by eating actual green eggs and ham! They were great sports to try them, and many liked them! Math has been busy! First graders are learning how to add up to 100 and Second graders are adding on a number line! We continue to learn new games and activities to deepen math learning.

Kindergarteners have been engineering leprechaun traps! The problem solving and collaboration between peers has been amazing. Time will tell we trap the wee leprechaun.

In math students have been learning about decomposing numbers- for example, 6= 3+3, 2+4, 1+5, or 6+0. We’ve been practicing listening to story problems and figuring out an equation to solve.

Kindergarteners have been learning about the reasons why an author writes books- to entertain, persuade, or teach facts. Ask your child the difference between a fact and an opinion.

Bring on spring! Keep reading!

A message from Pam Murphy, RN DCS School Nurse

Recently, there have been numerous student requests for cough drops. As cough drops are considered medication, I am asking for your help in following the ConVal policy on medication administration at the elementary level. To do this, any medication, including cough drops, must be delivered to the school by a parent/guardian or their designated responsible adult in the original container. A written permission form is also required which is available at DCS.

Please reach out to me at pmurphy@conval.edu if you have any questions.
