Big Creek Elementary Named a 2025 Blue Ribbon School Big Creek Elementary Named a 2025 Blue Ribbon School

Big Creek Elementary School has been named a 2025 Blue Ribbon School by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW), one of just 14 schools in Ohio to receive this recognition.

Last year, Big Creek Elementary was nominated for the National Blue Ribbon Schools program based on criteria set by the U.S. Department of Education. When the national program was discontinued, ODEW committed to honoring all 14 nominated Ohio schools with state-level recognition, a testament to the fact that the achievement itself never changed, only the stage on which it will be celebrated.

"This recognition means so much to our entire Big Creek community. Our students work hard every day, and our teachers pour their hearts into making sure every child feels supported and challenged. This is their moment, and I couldn't be more proud of all of them," said Bonnie Nagel, Big Creek Elementary School Principal.

"Big Creek Elementary exemplifies what it means to put students first. This Blue Ribbon recognition reflects the dedication you see in that building every single day, from the classroom to the hallways to everything happening behind the scenes. Our Titans community should be incredibly proud," said Superintendent Tracy Wheeler.

ODEW is currently developing plans to formally recognize schools at the state level in the coming months.

This recognition belongs to every student, teacher, staff member, and family who shows up every day to make Big Creek Elementary a place where all children can learn, grow, and reach their full potential.

Deionna Borders Captures Second State Title Deionna Borders Captures Second State Title

Berea-Midpark High School senior Deionna Borders has once again proven she is among the best in Ohio. And when the school came together to recognize her, she made sure the spotlight didn't stop with her.

Borders captured her second consecutive OHSAA Girls Wrestling State Championship, continuing a dominant run that has set her apart at both the state and national level. But in true form, she used the moment to shine a light on her fellow winter athletes as well.

What makes her accomplishment even more impressive is how quickly she rose in the sport. Borders developed into a top competitor in just a few seasons. Her ability to control matches and consistently finish strong has made her one of the most formidable wrestlers in her weight class.

This season, she didn't just win. She dominated. A perfect 38-0 record. Not a single point surrendered all season long. And on the biggest stage, at the state tournament, she finished her run with four pins to secure her second consecutive state title.

Her impact extends beyond individual success. Borders has played a key role in bringing attention to girls wrestling at Berea-Midpark, setting a standard for excellence and helping grow the program. And that same generosity of spirit showed when she made sure the event to recognize her also recognized the athletes competing alongside her this winter.

Joining her in representing Berea-Midpark this season: our District Champion Girls Basketball Team, our Conference Champion Boys Basketball Team, and state qualifiers: Lilly Becker in swimming, Josie Swartz in gymnastics, Micah Finley in girls wrestling, and track athletes Riley Jones, Dontrelle Bailey, Bayler Devins, Ethan Alten, Michael Warren, Collin Gallagher, Allan McDowell, Gisele Chandhok, and Isabella Santori.

Winning one state title is difficult. Winning two places her in rare company. But making sure her fellow student-athletes feel seen in the process? That is a champion.

And her story is still unfolding.

During the month of April, we recognize and celebrate our military families, including the children of those who serve our country.

On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, we will participate in Purple Up Day. This day brings awareness to the unique challenges military-connected students may face, including frequent moves, deployments, and time away from loved ones.

We encourage everyone to wear purple. Purple represents all branches of the military and shows unity and support. Whether it is a shirt, sweater, or small accessory, it is a simple way to show our military families that they matter.

Berea City School District is proud to share that all of our schools are Purple Star schools. This designation recognizes schools that are committed to supporting military-connected students and their families.

April is Autism Awareness Month, a time to learn more about autism and how we can better support one another as Titans.

Every child experiences the world in their own way. For students with autism, communication, social interactions, and sensory experiences may feel different or more intense. Taking time to understand these differences helps us respond with patience and care.

Simple actions can make a meaningful difference. Using clear language, being flexible, and respecting personal preferences all help create positive daily interactions for our students.

We also want every student to feel like they belong. That can be as simple as including someone in a conversation, encouraging friendships, or being mindful of different needs in shared spaces.

Most importantly, we celebrate the strengths of our students with autism. Each student brings unique talents, perspectives, and contributions to our schools.

Together, we can continue to build a supportive and inclusive environment where every student feels seen, valued, and connected.

The Portrait of a Titan is a collective vision that articulates aspirations for ALL of our students. The Portrait identifies six key competencies that every student in the Berea City School District should possess by the time they graduate. These competencies are nurtured at every grade level. They are adaptable, communicator, critical thinker, empathetic, innovative, and leader. Our educators are inspiring students to cultivate these essential skills.

Lights, Camera, Leadership: BMMS 8th Graders Produce Daily Video Program

Every day at Berea-Midpark Middle School begins with a new episode of the Morning Announcements. This daily video mixes important information, special reports, and entertainment, and it is all created and produced by 8th graders enrolled in the school’s Video Announcements course.

These talented students do much more than simply read the announcements; student production teams work hard every day to create a wide variety of video segments for each episode. From detailed reports about school activities to staff spotlight interviews, and from “man on the street” style segments to creative audience participation, every episode brings something new. Students are responsible for every facet of production: generating ideas for segments, scripting, scheduling interviews, recording, reporting, anchoring, graphics, and editing.

The work of the 8th grade Announcements Team exemplifies the Portrait of a Titan. Students grow in their skills as Communicators and Leaders as they work collaboratively to share important information with the rest of the school both verbally and visually. Adaptability and Critical Thinking are also essential as students deal with the inevitable technical issues and scheduling roadblocks while still staying true to project requirements, production deadlines, and their creative vision.

We are very proud of our talented Titans on the Announcements Team, and we encourage you to check out their work on the BMMS YouTube channel!

Communicators in Action: Students Bring Stories to Life

When learning extends beyond a single classroom, students see what is possible.

Berea-Midpark High School students in the Audio Music and Podcast Production class partnered with Mrs. Rivera’s Big Creek Elementary Kindergarten class to create digital audiobooks of the kindergartners’ favorite stories. High school students took the lead on recording, editing, and adding sound effects, turning each story into an engaging listening experience for their younger audience.

This experience highlights what it means to be a Communicator and a Leader. High school students were responsible for bringing ideas to life and sharing them in a way that connected with others, while kindergarten students stepped into the role of audience and future creators.

The project came full circle when kindergarten students visited the high school to meet the student creators, listen to their audiobooks, and get a behind-the-scenes look at Titans Studio.

For some of our youngest learners, it turned curiosity into an interest in recording, editing, and production.

Innovation and Teamwork Fuel Success. BMMS Students Earn 3rd Place in Dragster Competition

Berea-Midpark Middle School students recently took part in the 6th Annual Polaris Palooza, joining teams from across the region for a day of hands-on STEM competition.

Polaris Palooza challenges students to apply their thinking through design-based events that require creativity, precision, and collaboration. One of those challenges, the Dragster competition, tasks students with designing, building, and racing their own vehicles.

Team BMMS Car rose to the challenge, earning a 3rd place finish in the Dragster competition. Their success reflected not only strong technical skills, but also their ability to work together, problem-solve, and adjust throughout the process.

The experience highlighted several Portrait of a Titan competencies in action. Students demonstrated innovation as they designed and refined their dragsters. They showed critical thinking as they tested ideas and made adjustments. Most importantly, they embodied leadership and communication through teamwork, supporting one another and working toward a shared goal.

Beyond the results, the day was filled with energy and fun. Students collaborated, learned from the experience, and represented Berea-Midpark Middle School with pride.

The Berea Board of Education holds regular community conversations to give the public access to board members outside of the formal public participation setting of a meeting. Residents will have the opportunity to meet and discuss any concerns they may have with two board members during a 30 minute time-slot set aside prior to each regular scheduled Board of Education meeting. The goal of this effort is to more effectively connect with the public and learn more about the community.
