Welcome to Spring in Michigan! One day it is warm and sunny and the next it is raining, snowing or a mix of precipitation. Flowers started to bloom even though the warm weather tricked them into blooming just a little too early

I hope you have time to read, play, and relax during Spring Break. Heading to the library is a great way to check out some new or old books, magazines and other materials to have on hand during break and also all the other days of the year! Some of you might have the chance to get away also; I will! Breaks are a great way to recharge and reset. Thank you parents for encouraging your child to read every day. Modeling reading in front of your child/children helps to instill habits in them, even if it is a newspaper or magazine.

Students continue to receive a book monthly to grow their home libraries. I purchase these books with donations from individuals and also the American Legion in South Haven donated funds. Thank you to all those who donated! I truly hope students are enjoying the books they get to keep and read. Also, in March we were grateful for volunteers coming in to read to the students as Mystery Readers. We enjoyed hearing them read different books, especially ones that made us laugh!

We will be holding a Playground Fundraising event for adults on Sunday, May 18th in the evening at Fenn Valley Vineyards. This will include dinner, beverages and a silent auction. We are looking for table sponsors at this time along with silent auction donation items. More information to come so save the date!

Once again we will be hosting CPR/First Aid on Tuesday, May 13th from 5:30-8:30pm. The cost is $25.00 which includes dinner and childcare (if needed). Please let me know if you would like to be on the list. This is for parents, grandparents, community members, neighbors, or any adult who would like to learn or have a refresher in CPR/First Aid.

Sincerely,

Jamie Walle

This is a guest blog post by Lauren P. Bailes, University of Delaware; Henry May, University of Delaware; and Danielle Riser, American Institutes for Research High rates of schoolwide chronic absence among elementary students have academic consequences for all students in the school, not just those who are chronically absent, according to new research.
