STATE TESTING - Wisconsin Forward Exam

This week we will begin state testing!!! Our testing days this week are Tuesday and Thursday. Please remind your child that it is extremely important that they get good rest the night before testing. HERE WE GO!!! πŸ˜€

The testing schedule is below:

  • Mar 18- ELA Session 1 (45 Min)
  • Mar 20 - ELA Session 2 (45 Min)
  • Mar 24 - ELA Session 3 (35 Min)
  • Mar 26 - Math Session 1 (45 Min)
  • Mar 28 - Math Session 2 (45 Min)

READING READING

Reading πŸ“š

We will begin Unit 8: Weather and Climate. Our Essential Questions: How do we understand change?

In this unit, students will read informational texts about weather and climate, with a focus on cloud types and tropical storms. They will also read pieces of creative writing on these same topics. They will synthesize information to build the following Enduring Understandings:

  • weather can change from day to day or moment to moment
  • Scientists observe and record weather patterns over long periods of time to understand a region's climate.
  • Earth has different climate zones with distinct seasons and weather patterns.
  • weather and climate affect people's lives
  • scientists can use climate data and knowledge of weather patterns to predict the weather

This week we will:

  • Determine the central message
  • Use information gained from illustrations and words
  • Describe cause and effect relationship and connections in a text
  • Use Context clues to determine meaning of words and phrases
  • Distinguish literal and nonliteral language: metaphors

WRITING WRITING

Writing πŸ“

This unit in Writing... will be a research project. Students will research a specific type of weather using credible sources. They will write a report about that type of weather and present it to the class.

This week, students will:

  • Brainstorm a topic
  • Evaluate print sources
  • Gather information and take notes from print sources
  • Organize the essay

MATH MATH

Math πŸ“

This week in math...students will begin Unit 6: Geometry. In this unit students develop ways to describe, classify and make generalizations about two dimensional shapes, particularly quadrilaterals. Students will explore polygons in a variety of creative ways. They form polygons and special quadrilaterals to build understanding that shared attributes can define a larger category. Week 3 combines geometry and measurement as students measure the perimeters and areas of polygons. Week 4 offers opportunities to apply what they've learned about quadrilaterals and area in the context of fractions.

This week. students explore polygons while using a variety of tools and activities. Students use examples and nonexamples to explore the attributes of quadrilaterals. We will guide students in making their own sets of tangram pieces. Since 5 of the 7 pieces are right triangles, a discussion of congruence and similarity naturally arises. We will teach them a work place game where students use their tangram pieces to begin solving a series of geometric puzzles.

SOCIAL STUDIES + SCIENCE SOCIAL STUDIES + SCIENCE

Social Studies 🌍 + Science ♻️

Our class is going to begin a "Kewaunee Kids Care Campaign!" They are on a mission to save our planet by tackling two of the biggest environmental problems: food waste and plastic consumption. Students will be working on encouraging students and staff to keep their unused breakfast items. We want them to then place those items into deposit bins throughout the school. Our class will go around collecting the items on Fridays so that I can bring them to the Kewaunee County Food Pantry. The message the students are hoping to share is below:

Why It Matters:

🌎 Food Waste:

  • 1/3 of the food we produce gets wasted!

  • Wasting food harms the environment and costs us money.

  • Simple changes like eating leftovers or using food scraps for compost can make a big difference!

πŸ₯€ Plastic Waste:

  • Every year, millions of tons of plastic end up in our oceans and landfills.

  • Plastics take over 500 years to decompose!

  • Reducing plastic use helps protect wildlife and the environment.

How YOU Can Help:

  • Finish your meals! Only take what you can eat.

  • Use less plastic. Bring reusable bags, bottles, and containers.

  • Recycle properly! Make sure plastic is put in the right bins.

Get Involved!

  • Save your unused and unopened items of food and donate them to a local food pantry or shelter

  • Help spread the word to your family, friends, and community!

Together, we can make a BIG difference. 🌱
Let’s take small steps to reduce waste and protect our planet for future generations!

"Every little change helps the planet!"

Be on the look out for more information! They are incredibly proud and excited that they have the opportunity to help!

Notes + Other Topics Notes + Other Topics

Jackets

It is that time of year, where we need to start bundling up! Please ensure that your child comes to school with a jacket every day. We have our extra recess at 9:30 in the morning, so the temperatures are very chilly in the morning. If your child does not have a jacket starting next week, they will have to stay inside. Thank you for your help with this!

Snack

We do have snack time built into our schedule this year because our lunch is so late in the day. We ask that if you'd like your child to have a snack, that it is something separate from their lunch, and something small that they could eat within 5 minutes. We will not provide snack each day, so if your child does not bring a snack, they will not receive a snack.

Agenda

Your child will receive an agenda on the first day of school. This will list their homework assignments for the day. They will mostly be the same, day to day. We ask that you view the agenda and make any notes that would be important for us to know for the following school day. We also ask that you initial the agenda to let us know that you viewed it. We will write any important reminders in the agenda as well.

Reading:30 mins a night

Math: Home Connections Worksheet (ONLY Tuesdays + Thursdays)

Spelling: Practice spelling list

Class Dojo

This year we will use an app called Class Dojo. This is an incentive program that allows students to earn points for positive behaviors (raising hands, working hard, being on task, etc.). As a class we will set goals to earn classroom rewards such as pizza parties, extra recess, pajama days. A feature on that app that you may find useful is the messaging component. It allows you to send messages to us via the app - similar to texting. You can also look at your child's report to see the type of points they earn each day.

Please note: This is something we use within the classroom - it is not something that you must download or connect to. But it is available if you'd like.
