Questions about Absences Questions about Absences

Every year we get questions about the difference between pre-approved absences and remote learning (or Participated Remote) days. Here is the primary difference. Pre-approved absences are counted as absences for your child and will still result in you receiving automated absence messages, the only advantage is that if approved, the absence can be entered as “excused” instead of "unexcused". A remote learning day is not considered an absence as long as your child completes the missed work (found in Canvas) within two days of returning to school. There are limitations on Remote Learning Days, including a maximum of 5 days per semester, but if approved, they are generally the better option.

The link for requesting days is on our website under "All Things Attendance". You can find this by scrolling down on the main page. It is also included at the bottom of every newsletter for ease of use. The link outlines the specific differences and limitations (when they can be used and how many per year) of each absence type.

We believe the best way for your child to learn is to be present at school, but we understand that there are valid reasons why a child may need to be out.

PBIS Update / Grade Level Detention PBIS Update / Grade Level Detention

At CMS, we consistently emphasize our “3Bs” expectation – Be Respectful, Be Engaged, and Be Prepared. As part of our school’s PBIS framework, when students demonstrate these behaviors, CMS staff award your child PBIS points that they will be able to use in our PBIS store towards many enticing prizes. When students do not demonstrate these behaviors in the classroom, teachers will remind students of these expectations and provide three (3) opportunities for redirection. If negative behavior continues, teachers will issue a minor referral. When students receive a minor referral, the teacher will notify the parent via email and assign your child a grade level detention, to be served during the next lunch period. See attached flyer.

Parent Action Items:

  1. Make sure the email address in Infinite Campus is correct. If not, please email masoncm@fultonschools.org.
  2. Please go over this information with your child so that they hear the same information from you that they hear from the school.

Huskies Helping Huskies (HHH) is a parent-led non-profit helping CMS students and families in urgent need with school supplies, snacks, toiletries, and other essentials.

Will you donate an item to help a CMS student in need?
The first distribution of the new school year will be in September, right before the week-long fall break. HHH aims to provide a Walmart gift card to help with groceries, along with snacks, laundry detergent, and toiletry items. Please consider ordering an item from our Walmart or Amazon wish lists and have it delivered directly to HHH. When we can provide these items for our families, it frees up funds for other essentials.

Of course, we also welcome monetary donations! Donate directly through Venmo or PayPal. If you have any questions about your contribution or requesting a corporate match, reach out to hhh.cms@gmail.com. Visit the website to learn more about HHH.

Local business owner? Let's connect!
Are you (or do you know) a local business owner who might be willing to sponsor an HHH student for the year? We'd love to share the benefits of sponsorship! Please reach out at hhh.cms@gmail.com.

THANK YOU!

**Optional** Device Protection Plan - PROMOTION!

As a reminder, the Optional Device Protection (ODP) enrollment window remains open through September 25th. We encourage all schools to actively promote this program with families, particularly our middle schools, where students have recently been issued brand-new Chromebooks.

The Optional Device Protection Plan helps families offset the cost of accidental device damage and can significantly reduce out-of-pocket expenses for repairs or replacement. Without coverage, families may be responsible for repair costs ranging from $30-$270, with replacement costs up to $500 depending on the extent of the damage.

📚 Canvas Missing Work & Gradebook Update 📚 Canvas Missing Work & Gradebook Update

To help students and families have a clear and accurate picture of academic progress, Canvas will automatically mark assignments as MISSING and enter a 0 when work is not submitted by the deadline. This helps students quickly identify assignments that still need attention and ensures that grades accurately reflect the work submitted.

When late work is accepted and graded according to the late-work policy, the 0 will be updated with the earned score. We encourage families to check Canvas regularly, review missing assignments together, and help students stay on top of upcoming deadlines. Need help looking at an assignment? Check out this Canvas Guide.

Questions about an assignment, a missing label, or a grade? Please reach out directly to your student’s teacher. Their email address can be found here: Staff Emails - Crabapple Middle School. Thank you for partnering with us to support student success!
